Rector's Reflections

This Advent, our watching and waiting for Christ to break into our world, is happening in the shadows of power, privilege and prejudice. It is happening as the voices of those oppressed by the sin of racism cry out in the wilderness and the streets of America. My preaching Sunday echoed Advent in America and many asked for a copy of the sermon which can be found at: http://vicarbill.wordpress.com/ and you can watch it online at: http://www.wctv25.com/.

While not a traditional Advent text, I was drawn to Paul's letter to the Ephesians and how we  might live if Paul is right that Christ has created one humanity in place of all human divisions? For Paul it was the longstanding hostility between Jews and Gentiles (non-Jews) and for us it is the division based on power, privilege and prejudice based on the color of one's skin. I invite you to read Paul substituting race for religious insiders/outsiders...

But don't take any of this for granted. It was only yesterday that you outsiders to God's ways had no idea of any of this, didn't know the first thing about the way God works, hadn't the faintest idea of Christ. You knew nothing of that rich history of God's covenants and promises in Israel, hadn't a clue about what God was doing in the world at large. Now because of Christ-dying that death, shedding that blood-you who were once out of it altogether are in on everything.

The Messiah has made things up between us so that we're now together on this, both non-Jewish outsiders and Jewish insiders. He tore down the wall we used to keep each other at a distance. He repealed the law code that had become so clogged with fine print and footnotes that it hindered more than it helped. Then he started over. Instead of continuing with two groups of people separated by centuries of animosity and suspicion, he created a new kind of human being, a fresh start for everybody.

Christ brought us together through his death on the cross. The Cross got us to embrace, and that was the end of the hostility. Christ came and preached peace to you outsiders and peace to us insiders. He treated us as equals, and so made us equals. Through him we both share the same Spirit and have equal access to the Father.

That's plain enough, isn't it? You're no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is now your home country. You're no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone. God is building a home. He's using us all-irrespective of how we got here-in what he is building. [Ephesians 2:11-22 The Message]

May you see Christ taking shape day after day-in all the saints if this faith community built by God echoing and accompanying those crying out, outsiders and insiders-all beloved children of God.

First Nite Spaghetti Dinner

The committee preparing for this fundraiser for the church is looking for monetary donations. Money is needed to purchase all of the items needed to make the dinner. This is one of our most popular fundraisers. There will be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board in the parish hall and checks are to be made out to All Saints'. Thank you.

The Last Supper Painting

The Altar frontal painting this Sunday is The Last Supper [1984] is by Heinz Gaugel and a gift of Warren Muir. Gaugel was born in 1927 in the village of Eybach in the Swabian Alps region of southern Germany. A self-taught artist, Heinz moved to Canada in 1951 where he began his artistic career and he died in 2001. His works include oils on canvas, ceramics, stained glass, fresco, and sgraffito. He created monumental works in churches, public spaces and private buildings.

How to Join All Saints
Just show up. OK, this may not be the only requirement, but it is by far, the most important one. Many Episcopal parishes are intentionally vague about assigning membership. We don't want to be known as places where weekly attendance is taken, annual contributions are tabulated, and your membership is assigned only if you pass muster. We are much less concerned about counting the people who are in, than we are about leaving someone out. Baptism in this or any Christian church, confirmation or reception by a bishop of the Episcopal Church or of a church in communion of the Episcopal  Church (expected of all adult members), attendance, reception of Holy communion, and some sort of financial commitment. Of course, some people claim membership to our churches because a long-lost relative once attended, and this is fine by us. We believe the church should reflect the open and accepting arms of Jesus. Rotary's Holiday Basket Event for Life Ministries Food Pantry
The Wolfeboro Rotary will be holding it's annual "Holiday Basket" fund raising event for the L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry on Tuesday, December 16th to Saturday, December 20th.

As in past years they will set up a headquarters in the lobby of the Prudential Spencer-Hughes real estate office, downtown Wolfeboro at 22 South Main St. Rotarian's will be there every day from 8:00am to 1:00pm to talk about the need and to accept money and food donations. Wolfeboro's own AM radio station WASR will be there with host Gary James to broadcast short segments over the air to publicize the event.

This is the largest fund raising event for the Food Pantry and so very important to us. Please plan to stop by on one of those mornings to show your support of the food pantry and drop off a donation.
Life Ministries
All Saints is going to be featuring a food monthly that is in need for the Life Ministries Food Pantry. We welcome any and all donations of non-perishable items. December's food is canned peaches and pears. Please place donations in the basket in the Narthex. Thank you for all donations!
