Rector's Reflections

Love Is More Than A Feeling...

Love God, love neighbor, and love self. Jesus is really into relationships! While we often claim to live in love, by loving ourselves first we have less love to give to neighbor and even less for God. We are reminded of this during confession from the Book of Common Prayer: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

Jesus puts relationship with God first. He doesn't do this to make us last but so that we can fully understand love and relationship the way God desires it for us. In Sunday's readings we will hear how God desires us to be in relationship: by being just in all our dealings with others, by not being led astray by the wicked, by sharing the gospel with humility and tender care, and by loving God and neighbor. It might sound simple, but relationships are far from simple. Relationships are complex creatures with complex issues.

Even the best relationships include struggle. Love should be an easy thing, but it takes work and effort to love God, love others, and love oneself. In what ways can we, God’s beloved gathered the church, help people to make and maintain healthy relationships? How do we encourage self-worth and humility? How can we remind one another, and those who huger for love and acceptance how much God truly loves each one of us?

Intellectually, we know that love is, as the band Boston sang, "more than a feeling." But too often the command to love God and neighbor is reduced to inoffensive, vaguely positive emotions, instead of the gritty exertion that results first in our death, then in our rebirth as people with new eyes to see Christ in those around us. Loving God means willing and working for what God wills and names as good, especially with regard to our neighbor.

And the Greatest of these is Love!

Saint-o-Lanterns this Week!

Nancy Thomas and some intrepid volunteers will be helping Church School kids carving 'saint-o-lanterns' during Church School this week. If you know of any children who would like to participate or if you would like to help out, please contact Nancy at timbacrylfarm@metrocast.net. Thanks!

Inquirers Gathering Sunday

There will be an inquirers gathering Sunday at 11:30 am (following worship) to learn more about formal membership at All Saints' and ask questions you may have.

Volunteer Visitors Invited

Attention Volunteer Visitors - Pastor Bill will be visiting Mountainview on Tuesday, October 28th in the afternoon and is welcoming anyone who would like to join him. Everyone will be meeting in the church parking lot at 1:30 pm. Please talk to him after service or call the church office if are able to join the group.

ChIPS

For 38 years, NH Episcopal congregations have been supporting a Christmas gifts program for the children of parents incarcerated in the NH state prison system. At All Saints for the past two decades our campaign has taken the intergenerational approach: we adults contribute cash, or checks in any amount ($20 is recommended for each child) payable to All Saints with ChIPs on the memo line, and the Church School kids go shopping with their adult leaders. We like this method because the kids know what to buy: they are experts on the coolest toys and gifts. They also know the rules: no toy weapons, no Play Doh, glue or crayons, no knitting needles, crochet hooks, glass or sharp tools, and no clothing. Sporting equipment, CDs and board games are among the desirable items, along with toys for younger children. Participants are also invited to donate a new children's book for any age up to 15. THE TIME IS NOW. There is a green wrapped gift box with a slot in it for your donations, needed by Nov. 2 at the latest. So we adults have just two Sundays to get our cash to the shoppers so they can do their part in this vital ministry. All Saints Diocesan Convention folks will transport the toys to Convention Saturday morning, Nov. 8, where a truck will receive all the gifts and deliver them for sorting.

- Thanks, Cate McMahon

UTO Ingathering

United Thanks Offering (UTO) Fall Ingathering is typically accepted during Diocesan Convention. There is a table near the registration desk at the Grappone Center that will accept parish checks for UTO contributions Saturday morning, Nov. 8. These will be presented all together during the Offertory. Our parish treasurer will be making out a check for any amount remaining in the account since the Spring Ingathering, PLUS any UTO money you contribute from your Blue Boxes on the next two Sundays.

Election Day Bake Sale - November 4th

Please be thinking of donating a baked good for the ECW Bake Sale. The proceeds are used to support our outreach charities. Items needed are baked good, sandwiches, And soups. Items may be brought to the chapel the day before or the morning of sale. Any questions, contact Dianne Wasmuth at 569-3526 or diannewasm@yahoo.com.

Photo Directory Make Up Day

We will be scheduling a day in the future for anyone that was not able to get their photo taken last week. Please respond via email (allsaints@metrocast.net) or call (569-3453) with your name and the day of the week that you prefer to have the photographer come back out.

Electronic Parish Directory

Donna will be printing new parish directories soon with all of Pastor Bill's info and the latest parish list. Would anyone like to see this listing electronically instead of paper form? We would get the directory on the eNews and then when it is updated (we would let you know revision has happened) you could just view or print from home. Please let us know your thoughts on this. We would always keep the paper directory but if this works, we could be saving a lot of paper. Thanks.

Crop Walk - This Sunday

First Congregational Church, Wolfeboro and All Saints Episcopal Church, Wolfeboro are teaming up for the  Crop Walk to be be held on October 26th sponsored by Church World Service.

Crop Walks have been held in Wolfeboro many times in the past including the very successful one held last year. If you are bothered by the hunger that exists in the local area, in our nation and around the world, here is an opportunity to do something about it. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from the Crop Walk will be donated to the L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry here in Wolfeboro and Knights Against Hunger with the balance being used by Church World Service to help alleviate hunger elsewhere in the United States and around the world.

If you would like to walk and experience a bit of what many people have to do to simply meet basic needs, join us on the walk beginning at First Congregational Church on Sunday, October 26th at 1:00 PM. Registration will be at 12:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall. We will walk from First Church to Albee Beach and back. Bailey's Bubble ice cream will be enjoyed by participants at the end of the walk. Walkers will gather pledges from those who are concerned about hunger but cannot participate by walking. Pledge envelopes will be given to those who wish to walk after church on Sunday, October 19th. Pledges should be collected before the walk on October 26th and turned in during the registration period before the walk.

You can also donate online by going to the Church World Service website (churchworldservice.org) and navigating your way to the Wolfeboro Crop Walk page. There you will find a list of walkers and instructions for donating online. The site is very user friendly.

Bulletins

We are still looking for your feedback on the bulletin. Any comment is welcome. Please share your feedback with Donna, our parish administrator, and Bill, our rector, over the coming weeks.

We Make the Road by Walking Bible Study

This group meets every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the library. All are welcome to attend.

Women's Bible Study

Joyce Lake leads a bible study on Mondays in the library at 10 am. She uses the book Following Christ...The Man of God. It is a study of John 6-14 and this center section of John's gospel allows us to walk by Jesus' side as he impacts those around him, modeling love, grace, and humility. It's impossible to closely follow Jesus and remain unchanged. Place yourself in each scene, grasp every detail. In these chapters, you will find living truths designed to leave their marks on our lives. Take them in and allow the living water to carve your life into a pattern after God's own heart.

L&T Hours Change 11/6

Effective 11/6/14, Thursday and Friday hours will change to 10 am until 3 pm.

Food Pantry Needs
All Saints is going to be featuring a food monthly that is in need for the Life Ministries Food Pantry. We welcome any and all donations of non-perishable items. October's food is canned soup. Please place donations in the basket in the narthex. Thank you for all donations!
