Rector's Reflections

Say the word stewardship in some congregations and people instinctively reach to protect their wallets faster than you can say "pledge card!" Unfortunately, too often we associate stewardship exclusively with issues of money. The good news is that God has little interest in our wallets because God wants our whole lives, wallets and all!

This week the Pharisees approach Jesus and attempt to trap him on issues of financial obligations to the Roman government. Their question of Jesus, simplified to the extreme, is "who gets your wallet?" If Jesus answered one way, he would be guilty of treason. If he answered the other way, he would have been considered guilty of heresy in the eyes of the religious leaders. Jesus responds by issuing a challenge of his own-give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give to God what belongs to God. This statement challenges us to ponder: if God created the world and everything in it, what doesn't belong to God?

"Give to God the things that are God's" reflects how God has given us everything we have: food and clothing, home and shelter, family, the means of making a living-everything we need. God gives out of divine goodness, not because we deserve it or have somehow earned those gifts. When we give back to God then we acknowledge that everything belongs to God. You could say that there really is no such thing as "Christian giving," since none of it is ours in the first place. All of it is a gift, meant to be used for the good of our neighbors and shared with those who have need-because we belong to God and to one another.

Crop Walk - October 26

First Congregational Church, Wolfeboro and All Saints Episcopal Church, Wolfeboro are teaming up for the  Crop Walk to be be held on October 26th sponsored by Church World Service.

Crop Walks have been held in Wolfeboro many times in the past including the very successful one held last year. If you are bothered by the hunger that exists in the local area, in our nation and around the world, here is an opportunity to do something about it. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from the Crop Walk will be donated to the L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry here in Wolfeboro and Knights Against Hunger with the balance being used by Church World Service to help alleviate hunger elsewhere in the United States and around the world.

If you would like to walk and experience a bit of what many people have to do to simply meet basic needs, join us on the walk beginning at First Congregational Church on Sunday, October 26th at 1:00 PM. Registration will be at 12:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall. We will walk from First Church to Albee Beach and back. Bailey's Bubble ice cream will be enjoyed by participants at the end of the walk. Walkers will gather pledges from those who are concerned about hunger but cannot participate by walking. Pledge envelopes will be given to those who wish to walk after church on Sunday, October 19th. Pledges should be collected before the walk on October 26th and turned in during the registration period before the walk.

You can also donate online by going to the Church World Service website (churchworldservice.org) and navigating your way to the Wolfeboro Crop Walk page. There you will find a list of walkers and instructions for donating online. The site is very user friendly.

Alleviate Hunger Sunday

This Sunday, October 19th our 10:00 service will be held at the First Congregational Church as the two congregations have a joint service focusing on ways we can help alleviate hunger in the local area.

During the message a few words will be spoken about L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry and End 68 Hours of Hunger: an organization that works to alleviate hunger among elementary school students in our district. The bulk of the message will be given by Kingswood High School students who will describe their organization, Knights Against Hunger; a student inspired group that works to alleviate hunger among their fellow middle and high school students.

There are a number of ways in which we can act to help alleviate hunger in our local area this Sunday.

1. Bring in non-perishable goods this Sunday to be placed in the food pantry wagon located at the rear of the gathering space or drop off at non-perishable goods any time at All Saints' Church.

2. Bring in non-perishable items, suitable for lunches, to be placed in the End 68 Hours of Hunger box, also located at the rear of the gathering space. Examples of items include peanut butter, jelly, canned tuna, canned chicken and the like.

3. Support the Crop Walk to be held on Sunday, October 26th either by walking or donating through a walker. During fellowship following worship on Sunday, the two congregations can enjoy fellowship and donate to the Crop Walk or sign up as walkers, if they wish. The students of Knights Against Hunger will be present to answer questions and to accept pledges for the Crop Walk. If you decide to donate, a check payable to CWS/Crop or cash will be needed this Sunday.

Bulletins

We are still looking for your feedback on the bulletin. Any comment is welcome. Please share your feedback with Donna, our parish administrator, and Bill, our rector, over the coming weeks.

We Make the Road by Walking Bible Study

This group meets every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the library. All are welcome to attend.

Women's Bible Study

Joyce Lake leads a bible study on Mondays at September 22nd in the library at 10 am. She will be using the book, Following Christ...The Man of God. It is a study of John 6-14 and this center section of John's gospel allows us to walk by Jesus' side as he impacts those around him, modeling love, grace, and humility. It's impossible to closely follow Jesus and remain unchanged. Place yourself in each scene, grasp every detail. In these chapters, you will find living truths designed to leave their marks on our lives. Take them in and allow the living water to carve your life into a pattern after God's own heart.

End 68 Hours of Hunger
This non profit is trying to eradicate children going hungry over weekends when not in school These children attend the Governor Wentworth Regional School District. There is a separate bin at the back of the church looking for very specific items for these kids. Any items that are not able to be used by this group will be donated to the Life Ministries Food Pantry. Items needed are: 16-18 oz. Peanut butter in plastic containers, jelly in plastic containers, canned pasta (ex: ravioli or spaghetti), canned soup, boxed macaroni and cheese, fruit cups, protein/nutrition bars, cereal (boxes or bages of 5-8 servings), tuna or chicken (in 10 oz. or less) cans in water.
Food Pantry Needs
All Saints is going to be featuring a food monthly that is in need for the Life Ministries Food Pantry. We welcome any and all donations of non-perishable items. October's food is canned soup. Please place donations in the basket in the narthex. Thank you for all donations!
