Rector's Reflections

Weddings tend to be fashion shows. Everyone wants to look their best, while the purpose is worship and the blessing of marriage in a community of faith. But today our societal expectations often make for weddings as public examples of selfish indulgence and excess. Wedding Wars, a recent reality TV show fed this as engaged couples competed for a complete wedding wardrobe. The winning couple received the bride's dress and the groom's tuxedo as well as proper attire for their entire wedding party. The estimated cash value was $30,000! Getting married these days is not cheap.

In Sunday's gospel Jesus tells a parable about a wedding invitation, a banquet, and God's grace. Jesus teaches about a king who ultimately invites all people to a wedding banquet. At first this parable seems to portray a wide open and gracious invitation to a wedding celebration. However, by the end it is hard not to feel sorry for the poor guy who gets a last-minute invitation but gets thrown out for not wearing the correct wedding duds! He apparently wasn't a winner on that era's counterpart of that reality TV show! Again, getting married is not cheap-but neither is grace.

Jesus tells this parable as a way of teaching us that receiving God's grace changes people. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer taught, God's grace is not cheap, it comes at a great cost upon the cross. Once we receive this costly grace, our lives are never the same. This grace compels us to act and calls us to bear fruit with our lives. Ultimately we are led to share this grace with others. To continue to live in the same way after receiving this gracious invitation is not an option. So what are we to do? We simply receive the gracious invitation to the banquet and find a changing room-it's time to live a new life.

Let us go now to the banquet. See you in worship where we receive expensive grace as a gift from God.

Blessings+

Bill

Slideshow of Wednesday Night

Dear All Sainters',

Wednesday was historic for All Saints' Church as it hosted the Institution of The Reverend William R. Peterson as its 3rd Rector. The church was packed with church members and clergy from New England.  The evening was spiritual, uplifting, humorous, and filled with inspiring music.  The reception following the service was perfect with wonderful food.

The slide show - including short video clips - lasts about 15 minutes, and I know you'll love watching it. (Click on the blue link below.)

Phil Wasmuth

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Every time I think of you I give God thanks! These words from Philippians have been echoing in my prayers following a wonderful Celebration of New Ministry where I was instituted by Bishop Rob as the third rector of All Saints'. The celebration was just that and so many in our community planned, practiced and made everything possible. Thank you doesn't seem to cover it, but know how appreciated you and the gifts you shared are to Kay and I. Thank you!

Bulletins

We are still looking for your feedback on the bulletin. Any comment is welcome. Please share your feedback with Donna, our parish administrator, and Bill, our rector, over the coming weeks.

Gospel Book

You may have noticed that occasionally the Gospel readings read in worship were slightly different than our bulletins. The reason is that the Gospel Readings book here at All Saints' uses an older lectionary (cycle of readings. The General Convention in June 2006 directed that the Revised Common Lectionary replace the Book of Common Prayer lectionary effective the First Sunday of Advent 2007 (resolution A077). We have ordered a revised Gospel Readings book to reflect the current worship practices of All Saints' and the Episcopal Church.

How to Join All Saints' Church

Just show up. OK, this may not be the only requirement, but it is by far, the most important one. Many Episcopal parishes are intentionally vague about assigning membership. We don't want to be known as places where weekly attendance is taken, annual contributions are tabulated, and your membership is assigned only if you pass muster. We are much less concerned about counting the people who are in, than we are about leaving someone out.

Baptism in this or any Christian church, confirmation or reception by a bishop of the Episcopal Church or of a church in communion of the Episcopal Church (expected of all adult members), attendance, reception of Holy communion, and some sort of financial commitment. Of course, some people claim membership to our churches because a long-lost relative once attended, and this is fine by us. We believe the church should reflect the open and accepting arms of Jesus

There will be an inquirers gathering Sunday, October 26th at 11:30 am following worship to learn more about formal membership at All saints' and ask questions you may have.

We Make the Road By Walking...

This weekly class resumes this Wednesday, October 15th. Look for your lessons via an email from Bill.

Veteran's Housing

All Saints Brothers and Sisters, it very evident that there are many homeless folks in our state and county. Many of our veterans coming back from overseas or being discharged in the past years are experiencing a serious lack of Veterans Transitional Housing in Carroll County for homeless veterans.  We lack a facility to help our veterans who have fallen on hard times.  There are many veterans who find themselves homeless for a variety of reasons.

"Starting Home" has been established to help remedy this situation - not with hand-outs, but offering a hand-up. Starting Home will be a 501c3 organization.  It has already received State of NH approval as a non-profit charitable organization and forwarded to the IRS.  It is proposed to be located in two wings of the old Carroll County Nursing Home in Ossipee.  We will accept all single veterans, men and women, who are in need of housing and help in overcoming mental and or physical health conditions if needed. We will help them find jobs and permanent housing.  We will help them get back into the community as both civic-minded citizens and tax-payers.  This effort is non-political, and again a Transitional Home, not permanent.

But what we need at this moment is your help.  You can go on line (VetHouseCC.org) to gather further information about this program and our funding efforts.

Women's Bible Study

Joyce Lake will begin a bible study on Monday, September 22nd in the library at 10 am. This group will meet every Monday. She will be using the book, Following Christ...The Man of God. It is a study of John 6-14 and this center section of John's gospel allows us to walk by Jesus' side as he impacts those around him, modeling love, grace, and humility. It's impossible to closely follow Jesus and remain unchanged. Place yourself in each scene, grasp every detail. In these chapters, you will find living truths designed to leave their marks on our lives. Take them in and allow the living water to carve your life into a pattern after God's own heart.

Photo Directory

All Saints will be producing another photo directory of our parishioners and we would like full participation from everyone. October 16, 17 and 18 will be the dates for picture taking. Please mark these dates on your calendars. You may login and signup for an appointment at:
