Rector's Reflections

God has showered humanity with gifts and blessings, but humanity continues to abuse those gifts. We have been entrusted with a creation to care for, and in our shortsightedness we abuse and pollute the earth, even bringing about the extinction of entire species. We abuse the gift of our bodies when we overindulge in food or alcohol or drugs. We have been given the ability to create so many wonderful things, and even this gift we abuse as we gather and keep as much as we can for ourselves.

This is nothing new. The Hebrew Scriptures make it clear over and over again, that the people turned away from God's gifts. God expected righteousness and justice. Instead the people responded with bloodshed and suffering, turning away from God. God gave the Ten Commandments primarily stated as negative imperatives so they live righteously, with maximum love for God and neighbor.

Even if you can think of all the ways you have not turned from God and all the ways you have been faithful, it does no good. As Paul reminds us in the reading from Philippians, "Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ" (Phil. 3:7). Even all of Paul's good and faithful acts add up to nothing. For Paul, and for us, all that matters is Jesus.

As Christ himself reminds us, he is our rock, our cornerstone. Jesus is the foundation for our faith and the foundation for our lives. Even as we turn from Jesus, even as we reject Jesus, he returns to us with love and forgiveness. This is the grace of God, the love of God coming into our world and into our lives. To our joy we discover the open arms of Jesus on the cross, bringing life into this world even where there is death; bringing hope where there is despair; and bringing resurrection to all creation.

See you in Worship!

+Bill

Blessing of the Animals

This year we are inviting folks to bring their pets to both services. So bring your beloved one(s) who bark, meow, chirp, squeak, or don't make any sounds and we will give thanks to God. Blessings for larger animals can be arranged with Pastor Bill and you may bring a picture to remember a beloved pet who is deceased or unable to attend for any reason.

Bulletins

This week we shift bulletin size and format as we continue to experiment with enhancing the worship experience for guests and All the Saints here in Wolfeboro. Please share your feedback with Donna, our parish administrator, and Bill, our rector, over the coming weeks.

Gospel Book

You may have noticed that occasionally the Gospel readings read in worship were slightly different than our bulletins. The reason is that the Gospel Readings book here at All Saints' uses an older lectionary (cycle of readings. The General Convention in June 2006 directed that the Revised Common Lectionary replace the Book of Common Prayer lectionary effective the First Sunday of Advent 2007 (resolution A077). We have ordered a revised Gospel Readings book to reflect the current worship practices of All Saints' and the Episcopal Church.

How to Join All Saints' Church

Just show up. OK, this may not be the only requirement, but it is by far, the most important one. Many Episcopal parishes are intentionally vague about assigning membership. We don't want to be known as places where weekly attendance is taken, annual contributions are tabulated, and your membership is assigned only if you pass muster. We are much less concerned about counting the people who are in, than we are about leaving someone out.

Baptism in this or any Christian church, confirmation or reception by a bishop of the Episcopal Church or of a church in communion of the Episcopal Church (expected of all adult members), attendance, reception of Holy communion, and some sort of financial commitment. Of course, some people claim membership to our churches because a long-lost relative once attended, and this is fine by us. We believe the church should reflect the open and accepting arms of Jesus

There will be an inquirers gathering Sunday, October 26th at 11:30 am following worship to learn more about formal membership at All saints' and ask questions you may have.

We Make the Road By Walking...

There will not be any Bible Study on Wednesday October 8 (due to the Rector's institution) but it will resume on Wednesday October 15th.

Veteran's Housing

All Saints Brothers and Sisters, it very evident that there are many homeless folks in our state and county. Many of our veterans coming back from overseas or being discharged in the past years are experiencing a serious lack of Veterans Transitional Housing in Carroll County for homeless veterans.  We lack a facility to help our veterans who have fallen on hard times.  There are many veterans who find themselves homeless for a variety of reasons.

"Starting Home" has been established to help remedy this situation - not with hand-outs, but offering a hand-up. Starting Home will be a 501c3 organization.  It has already received State of NH approval as a non-profit charitable organization and forwarded to the IRS.  It is proposed to be located in two wings of the old Carroll County Nursing Home in Ossipee.  We will accept all single veterans, men and women, who are in need of housing and help in overcoming mental and or physical health conditions if needed. We will help them find jobs and permanent housing.  We will help them get back into the community as both civic-minded citizens and tax-payers.  This effort is non-political, and again a Transitional Home, not permanent.

But what we need at this moment is your help.  You can go on line (VetHouseCC.org) to gather further information about this program and our funding efforts.

Women's Bible Study

Joyce Lake will begin a bible study on Monday, September 22nd in the library at 10 am. This group will meet every Monday. She will be using the book, Following Christ...The Man of God. It is a study of John 6-14 and this center section of John's gospel allows us to walk by Jesus' side as he impacts those around him, modeling love, grace, and humility. It's impossible to closely follow Jesus and remain unchanged. Place yourself in each scene, grasp every detail. In these chapters, you will find living truths designed to leave their marks on our lives. Take them in and allow the living water to carve your life into a pattern after God's own heart.

A Note of Thanks

Dear All Saints' Episcopal Church,

We thank the community of All Saints' for all you provided to us in order that we might realize our dream of a new church. We greatly appreciated the opportunities to share worship, study groups, and fellowship. Your generous hospitality of providing space to worship and store things was just what our congregation needed during our nomadic months.

"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and fellowship in the Holy Spirit, be with  you all. "

2 Corinthians 13:14
