Look for an e-vite to follow!

Rector's Reflections

It has been said that the Gospel of Matthew, more than the others, emphasizes the way we follow Jesus is by our work and deeds. In Sunday's reading Jesus pushes back on the religious authorities who question his authority and then tells a parable about two sons who don't do what they say they'll do. Both reveal surprises about the reign of God, like how prostitutes and tax collectors will go before others into God's kingdom.

In the first reading from Exodus, the thirsty Israelites quarrel with Moses and put the Lord God to the test. Moses cries out in desperation to the Lord and the Lord commands Moses to strike a rock to provide water for the people. God provided water flows and the doubt-filled question "Is the Lord among us or not?" receives an unlikely answer. Then in Paul's letter to the Church in Philippi, he writes to look to Christ as a model of humility, urging us to follow Jesus by placing the interests of others above our own.

And we who will gather on Sunday, will bring our questions, thirst, quarrels and doubts to encounter God with those we walk with in faith. Through the work of God, the people of All Saints' Wolfeboro will be nourished by broken bread and shared cup. Through the work of God, we leave fed and forgiven to offer our lives for the sake of our needy world. See you in worship!

Blessings+

Bill

P.S. We have been doing some "Holy Experimenting" around All Saints' with a focus on being more guest-oriented, user-friendly and hospitable...

1.) One area of experimentation has been our worship bulletins. Thank you for the feedback and please continue to share as we experiment more during October and November with a different format (more details in next week's e-news).

2.) This week we have moved our guest book from downstairs (where many, but not all guests to worship enter the building) to the narthex lobby upstairs. We typically move it upstairs for weddings and funerals/memorial services for greater guest access and welcome any feedback on its relocation.

Wolfe Schmokel

Former active parishioner, Wolfe Schmokel, passed away suddenly yesterday at home. Wolfe and Kay moved to Vermont last year in order to be closer to his children. Details on the services will follow. Our prayers are with Kay and the family.

During our discernment process and as part of our Parish Profile, we collected "What I Love About All Saints'" thoughts from parishioners. Here is what Wolfe had to say:

At All Saints I love: old friends, new friends, prayer, serious talk, and just fun times on Thursday mornings with the Men's Worship Group, great sermons and service opportunities (Caregivers is fun for someone who loves to drive, and it opens windows into many lives).

Almighty God, source of all mercy and giver of comfort, graciously tend those who mourn, that, casting all their sorrow on you, they may know the consolation of your love; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We Make the Road By Walking...

The theme for this week is "In Over Our Heads" and the readings are: Genesis 4:1-17; 6:5-8; 7:1-5; 8:1; 9:7-17, Psalm 51 and James 4:1-8. Join us Wednesday at 3:00 or 7:00 pm to be fed with the Word through studying and sharing the Eucharist together.

Veteran's Housing

All Saints Brothers and Sisters, it very evident that there are many homeless folks in our state and county. Many of our veterans coming back from overseas or being discharged in the past years are experiencing a serious lack of Veterans Transitional Housing in Carroll County for homeless veterans.  We lack a facility to help our veterans who have fallen on hard times.  There are many veterans who find themselves homeless for a variety of reasons.

"Starting Home" has been established to help remedy this situation - not with hand-outs, but offering a hand-up. Starting Home will be a 501c3 organization.  It has already received State of NH approval as a non-profit charitable organization and forwarded to the IRS.  It is proposed to be located in two wings of the old Carroll County Nursing Home in Ossipee.  We will accept all single veterans, men and women, who are in need of housing and help in overcoming mental and or physical health conditions if needed. We will help them find jobs and permanent housing.  We will help them get back into the community as both civic-minded citizens and tax-payers.  This effort is non-political, and again a Transitional Home, not permanent.

But what we need at this moment is your help.  You can go on line (VetHouseCC.org) to gather further information about this program and our funding efforts.

Women's Bible Study

Joyce Lake will begin a bible study on Monday, September 22nd in the library at 10 am. This group will meet every Monday. She will be using the book, Following Christ...The Man of God. It is a study of John 6-14 and this center section of John's gospel allows us to walk by Jesus' side as he impacts those around him, modeling love, grace, and humility. It's impossible to closely follow Jesus and remain unchanged. Place yourself in each scene, grasp every detail. In these chapters, you will find living truths designed to leave their marks on our lives. Take them in and allow the living water to carve your life into a pattern after God's own heart.

Salvadoran Partner Here This Sunday, Sept. 28

Hannah Perls of Cristosal, our partner in accompanying the Church in El Salvador, will visit All Saints Church Sunday, Sept. 28, at a parish forum between services, beginning at 9 a.m. All are welcome and encouraged to meet her and learn more about how Cristosal supports the people of El Salvador. Hannah will update us about what our assistance is accomplishing via the annual MDG grant we send.

Some years ago, All Saints hosted Cristosal co-founders Bishop Martin Barahona and the Very Rev. Richard Bower. Their visit was followed a year later by a visit from Jose Lopez, who heads the diocesan Human Rights Office and described its work to our congregation. In the intervening years, many new parishioners have joined All Saints and may not know about our relationship with El Salvador: how the rector (now retired) led a team of parishioners, including youth, to visit the country and take part in the rebuilding program to make earthquake-resistant homes. After that trip, All Saints parishioners raised money to build two earthquake-resistant homes of cinderblock, the type our parish delegation saw being built under the auspices of Episcopal Relief and Development.

Don't miss this opportunity to connect with some of the Gospel work we are helping to equip beyond our borders. Hannah will be available for Q and A and can speak about the crisis with the young migrants and what is being done in that regard as well.

Refreshments will be served.

L & T Fall Changeover 9/20

The Lord and Tailor Shop seasonal conversion was completed this week. Pastor Bill offered a prayer of thanksgiving and a blessing. Thanks to everyone who helped over the past week! Check out Wolfeboro, New Hampshire's most exciting (and thrifty) shopping experience and their fall collection. From the Music Corner

This week, Michele Voss, Ralph and I had tons of fun recording a CD of children's folk dances and rounds in my loft office.  These tunes will be used by Michele to teach in an all-girl's school in Orissa, India.

Michele and husband Bill will travel there in early November, and the students love having her come to spend time singing and dancing with them!   Ask her about this mission when you see her.

Thank you for including us in this project, Michele!

Soli Deo Gloria!

Holly
