Pastor Bill will be instituted as Rector.
Look for an e-vite to follow!
From the Rector

This week's installment of the Exodus legend shares the description of the freed people of Israel hankering after their life of servitude. The ingratitude of the people is met with the graciousness of God: in a manner that maintains Sabbath observance, the Creator sends quails in the evening and manna in the morning. A doublet of this passage is in Numbers 11. The legend helped centuries of Israelites to trust in God's grace. Scholars debate what natural edible substance the manna might be and we Christians have used this story to preach God's care for us and to illustrate the Eucharist. On the walls of many medieval churches were parallel paintings that depicted the falling manna and the distribution of communion. In some art, the manna itself was drawn as small round communion hosts.

In the Gospel, Matthew narrates one of Jesus' controversial parables, in which Jesus says the reign of God is like workers who get paid the same no matter when they start. Yet God is gracious and merciful, abounding in steadfast love. Once again, Matthew balances his earlier emphasis on righteous living with the assurance of God's forgiveness. The story contradicts the commonplace religious idea that when we die, heaven or hell will be assigned as deserved. But God disrupts our human, always wanting to be in control understanding of reward and punishment with surprising mercy. . In baptism and at the table, we receive the mercy and grace of God that is freely given to all.

Church father John Chryostom frames it this way in an Easter sermon:

Let all the pious and all lovers of God rejoice in the splendor of this feast; let the wise servants blissfully enter into the joy of their Lord. Let those who have toiled since the first hour now receive their due reward. Let any who came after the third hour be grateful to join the feast. Those who may have come after the sixth, let them not be afraid of being too late, for the Lord is gracious, and he receives the last even as the first. He has pity on the last, and he serves the first; he rewards the one, and is generous to the other; he repays the deed, and praises the effort. Come you all: enter into the joy of your Lord. The calf is a fatted one: let no one go away hungry.

Come Sunday to taste and see that God is good all the time!

In the holy hospitality of Jesus,

+Bill

On Wednesday of this week the ECW held its fall kitchen house tour.  Four lovely homes were on display, and lunch was included in the fund raiser for the charities of ECW.  I know you'll enjoy the 4 minute slide show.  Just click on web site and then click on Start Slideshow.  Enjoy.

We Make the Road By Walking...

.... A year-long quest for spiritual formation, reorientation, and activation. Join us as we gather to study God's Word in a worshipful small group setting. Bring your favorite bible, questions and a friend or neighbor. Wednesday afternoons @ 3:00 pm or Wednesday evenings @ 7:00 pm in the Beck Memorial Library.

The theme for this week is "The Drama of Desire" and the readings are: Genesis 3:1-13, Psalm 32 and Philippians 2:3:11.

Women's Bible Study

Joyce Lake will begin a bible study on Monday, September 22nd in the library at 10 am. This group will meet every Monday. She will be using the book, Following Christ...The Man of God. It is a study of John 6-14 and this center section of John's gospel allows us to walk by Jesus' side as he impacts those around him, modeling love, grace, and humility. It's impossible to closely follow Jesus and remain unchanged. Place yourself in each scene, grasp every detail. In these chapters, you will find living truths designed to leave their marks on our lives. Take them in and allow the living water to carve your life into a pattern after God's own heart.

Salvadoran partner here Sunday, Sept. 28

Hannah Perls of Cristosal, our partner in accompanying the Church in El Salvador, will visit All Saints Church Sunday, Sept. 28, at a parish forum between services, beginning at 9 a.m. All are welcome and encouraged to meet her and learn more about how Cristosal supports the people of El Salvador. Hannah will update us about what our assistance is accomplishing via the annual MDG grant we send.

Some years ago, All Saints hosted Cristosal co-founders Bishop Martin Barahona and the Very Rev. Richard Bower. Their visit was followed a year later by a visit from Jose Lopez, who heads the diocesan Human Rights Office and described its work to our congregation. In the intervening years, many new parishioners have joined All Saints and may not know about our relationship with El Salvador: how the rector (now retired) led a team of parishioners, including youth, to visit the country and take part in the rebuilding program to make earthquake-resistant homes. After that trip, All Saints parishioners raised money to build two earthquake-resistant homes of cinderblock, the type our parish delegation saw being built under the auspices of Episcopal Relief and Development.

Don't miss this opportunity to connect with some of the Gospel work we are helping to equip beyond our borders. Hannah will be available for Q and A and can speak about the crisis with the young migrants and what is being done in that regard as well.

Refreshments will be served.

L & T Fall Changeover 9/20

From the Music Corner

Some delightful sounds are emanating from our choir loft on Wednesday nights! We all pray that our rehearsals are bringing glory to God, and joy to your hearts on Sunday mornings. Striving for excellence in all we do is a powerful way to honor our Lord. Rehearsals sure help with that!

We do have a few new congregational hymns upcoming this autumn, so put on your "take a risk" hats, and join in the jubilant sounds after you have listened for a verse or two. The variety of unfamiliar music keeps us "fresh and alert" in worship; and SURPRISE! After a time, it's no longer unfamiliar! :0)

Our choir is also preparing a special anthem for Pastor Bill's service of institution on October 8th, and will welcome a trumpeter and floutist to share our musical worship that evening. With the presence of two bishops, uplifting music, prayers, and homily, we will certainly overflow with gratitude and celebration for all God has done, and is doing in our midst!

Soli Deo Gloria!

Holly
