From the Rector

The Eleventh Sunday  after Pentecost

In late August as learners are getting ready for a new school year and we, like many other churches, are starting new education opportunities, it's a good time to be reminded of the heart of Christian formation: conformation and transformation. Romans 12:2 reminds us to not be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think. Then you will know how to do everything that is good and pleasing to him.

Our formation as followers of Jesus happens over time-shaped by learning, worship, and all aspects of Christian life in community. As it was for Peter in Sunday's Gospel (Matthew  16:13-20), part of our formation is learning to confess Jesus as the Messiah, not only with the right words but also through an experience of the Living God in Christ. And along with Peter, through such formation we also discover who we are in relation to God: After Peter "confesses" Jesus' identity of Messiah, Jesus "confesses" Peter's identity by calling out his name and vocation.

Our own confession keeps forming us. In worship we acknowledge or sins and confess our faith using the words of the Nicene Creed.  It is in and trough our confessing Christ, we are formed in faith as we acknowledge who we are as sinner and saint, and acknowledge God is in the mystery of the Trinity. Like Peter's, our own identity is revealed in those truths. And, we might say, we are continually formed by and through them.

I like that Peter's confession is not a precondition for following Jesus; it comes in the middle of his journey of discipleship. Our formation too is a long process-lifelong, in fact-which begins at baptism (or even before!) and is guided by those saints (family, friends, Sunday School teachers, etc.) who travel before and with us. At this time of year, I invite you to reflect on your own formation, identity, and vocation as follower of Jesus, the Messiah, Son of the Living God.

Community Prayer Service for James Foley -
September 7th

Wolfeboro Area Clergy invite you to an ecumenical prayer service in memory of James Foley. We will gather to pray for his family and all who mourn on Sunday afternoon, September 7th at 2:00 pm at St. Katharine Drexel Church. In the meantime, All Saints is open for prayer days and evenings and Pastor Bill is available to meet and pray with individuals and groups as well.

Merciful Creator, your Holy Spirit intercedes for us even when we do not know how to pray. Send your Spirit now to comfort us in these days of need and loss, and help us to commend James  to your merciful care; support us all the day long of this troubled life, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes and the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, in your mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen

ECW Kitchen Tour 9/17
Tickets are available at the church office, Black's, Butternuts, and Varney Kitchens.

 From the Music Corner

I truly "live" in a special corner at All Saints!  My newly renovated office space in the bell tower has been fully functional and decorated for some months now;  but since it's a bit tucked away, you may not have seen it's sparkle yet.  You are welcome to stop by and take a peek at anytime....  Donna has a key if I'm not on campus.  Be prepared to climb those loft stairs! :0)

I hope to have Pastor Bill and the choir help to dedicate this space with me sometime this fall.  I certainly need God's blessing and wisdom in this vital ministry of musical worship.

Speaking of dedications, August 17th was a special time of dedicating our new keyboard, witnessing a baptism, and singing a plethora of new and different songs.  I again thank the family of Lawrence Tufts for this generous and loving bequest to All Saints. (Editor's note: Tune in next week for a photo of the dedication plaque!)

I did hear some parishioners were distressed by the amount of new or different music last Sunday. Rest assured that keeping the balance of tradition and variety is always a goal.  As I've often said over the years:  "If you experience a Sunday where you are less than pleased over musical choices, be patient.  Someone else is loving the music that day.  On a Sunday where you feel delighted with the music, remember others are being patient with what you love." It's a healthy way to live.  And always remember that our large and loving God treasures variety.... He created it!   The musical Psalms are full of exhortations to praise God in myriads of ways, with many instruments, and yes, even with dancing.  So as we journey forward, expect our musical traditions to be firmly in place, with offerings of variety included along the way.

Soli Deo Gloria!

  Phil's Phabulous Photo Phrenzie!

You have no doubt noticed that many of the wonderful pictures taken of All Saints activities, events and services are taken by Phil Wasmuth. Last week, in fact, he managed to capture so many great moments in the All Saints universe that we just don't have room for all of them. If you want to keep up with his (and others') beautiful documentation of Saint-ly moments, you should 'like' the All Saints' page on Facebook. Not into social media? No problem! Most of the photos are also HERE on the All Saints website. And when you see him, please be sure to say 'thanks' for all of his great work. (Oh, but you better pose and smile first! Goodness knows he's probably going to snap your picture!)

"Our Friend Fenton"
A Homily by The Rev. Susan Langle

August 15, 2014                                                                                  All Saints, Wolfeboro

To be 19 years old and in Paris! That experience shaped her life and her sense of herself, her style, her flair. To be in Paris, and to be in love with all things French.  That love was almost as significant to Fenton as her love for Peter. Those loves were almost as important to her as her cherished Book of Common Prayer. Fenton loved this wild and passionate Episcopal Church that is crazy in love with a wild and passionate God. From her childhood through the last days of her life, Fenton prayed the prayers and walked with Jesus. Wearing tiny elegant shoes, she walked with Jesus. In her very gracious and hospitable way she invited others along.

I was one of those she invited to the Feast. She showed me how to hold the holy things at this altar. When I asked what to do if the wine spilled she said  "DON'T". Fenton tried very hard to teach me to arrange flowers. She and Peter talked me into serving on the Vestry then commiserated over a wee dram about the headaches and joys such leadership gave us. And one year, sitting in front of the fire at her house surrounded by laughter and Christmas cheer, I was asked the question that had only one answer, the question that sent me out of All Saints, and to Episcopal Divinity School. Only by being invited to the Feast could I find the way to say yes to our wild and passionate God. Fenton was really good at setting the table of grace and encouragement. Fenton was really skilled at turning a little bread and a little wine into a banquet.

Fenton's church, our church, is a community of people who are travelers on the Way with Jesus. We are the church of Christmas Day. We are a community of people who know that our God comes to us as a vulnerable child. Our God makes a humble home in a land occupied by violence and fear.  God calls Her friends by name, and invites them to a Feast in the presence of those who trouble them and says: love them, forgive them, feed them. Our God invites us to share the Feast of Christmas Day with everyone, with the crazy idea that God's wild abundance will provide enough.

For months at a time Fenton Friend celebrated the coming and the abiding of the Christ as she set up the camels and the crowds of fishmongers and tipsy monks and windblown poets who inhabit the little French village of Santons she collected over the years. This village is now yours. When you see it remember her. When you see it remember that God's love abides. When you set it up again and again, remember that God comes to us as a vulnerable child, again and again. Love those children, the ones abandoned at the borders, the ones stranded on the mountaintops with no water, the ones in your own homes - the little princes and the little mermaids - who are just learning the way, the truth and the life.

Teach them the Way, show them your redeemed life, your version of what it means to be a Saint of God. Tell them the stories of Jesus, who was and is and is to come. Fenton now enjoys the ongoing the Banquet hosted by the Love that is at the heart of the universe.  She has left you a good example of a life of prayer, and gracious hospitality.  You know the Way.  Keep walking.

AMEN
