From the Rector

Dear All Saints and Sinners,

It is said that "We are beggars; this is true," were Martin Luther's last written words. As followers of Jesus, you and I too are "beggars" for God's grace, undeserved but given freely to us. A Christian beggar's faith then is centered not on what we give or say we believe, or even do, but on what is received from God: these gracious things that sustain us, bring healing and wholeness.

In Sunday's gospel, the Canaanite woman is a "beggar" like you and me, desperately longing and in need. She longs and needs Jesus' healing for her daughter. Initially, she is denied a place at the table, but in her hunger and need, she will take even "crumbs" of faith. Jesus' healing power and love are eventually extended even to this "undeserving" Gentile outsider. The good news is that this person on the margins of Jesus' mission finally receives grace and her beggar's faith reveals that the love of God exceeds the people and places we think are deserving.

Marginalized or not, we are all beggars before God, as Paul reminds the Romans-all "imprisoned in disobedience" and dependent on God. Our sense of "insider" and "outsider" crumbles in the face of our common need and God's abundant mercy to all, white or black, Jew or Gentile, looter or police, mentally ill or mentally stable. Instead of dividing people between those who have a place at the table and those who get crumbs, we have an opportunity to share hospitality with our fellow beggars who hunger for healing and wholeness.

It can be challenging to see ourselves living amidst the abundance of America as beggars. So think about the Canaanite woman as our model, as she persists with both humility and audacity. As followers of Jesus and "beggars" for God's grace, we too live the same paradox of humility and audacity, boldly coming to Jesus and humbly acknowledging the need for help with the demons in our lives. Even though crumbs from God's table would be enough for us, we are offered instead the abundance of Jesus' own self in bread and wine and invited to share this abundance with insider and outsider alike.

See you in worship!

Blessings+

Bill

August 17 - Day of Prayer

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has urged Episcopalians to observe Sunday, August 17, as a day of prayer for those in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East living in fear of their lives, livelihoods, and ways of living and believing. Her call for prayer is in response to violence in Iraq that has included the slaying of Christians, Yazidis, and other Iraqi religious minorities; the destruction and looting of churches, homes, and places of business; and the displacement of thousands under the threat of death.

Eternal God,
in whose perfect kingdom
no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness,
no strength known but the strength of love:
So mightily spread abroad your Spirit,
That all peoples may be gathered
under the banner of the Prince of Peace,
as children of one Father;

to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever.

Amen.

Go Visiting with Pastor Bill

Pastor Bill is looking for a couple of folks to join him on visits to our home bound members of All Saints. He would like to schedule a visit to Mountain View Community in Ossipee where 3 of our folks live. He would like to go Monday August 18th or Wednesday August 20th. Please email him at: pastorbillpetersen@gmail.com or call the church office if you are able to join him. Thank you.

A Gentle Reminder

Dear brothers and sisters of All Saints,

At our parish finance committee meeting last month, we learned from Treasurer Don Hargy that pledge income to date is significantly below the actual pledges we made at the beginning of the year. As we prepare to welcome our new rector, the Rev. Bill Petersen, you are invited to take a look at what you pledged and, insofar as possible, bring it up to date. We would like to have the welcome mat out for Bill in all the ways we can to help get our parish family and its new pastor off to the best start possible, together. As you know, a pledge may be adjusted up or down at any time, upon notification to the parish treasurer.

If you have any questions, please call Parish Administrator Donna Young or Treasurer Don Hargy.  Thanks.

ECW Kitchen Tour 9/17
The Episcopal Church Women will sponsor and host a Kitchen Tour to support charities serving children. Included is a delicious luncheon prepared by the Ladies of All Saints' Church. Generous sponsors will also be on hand with displays. The tour takes place on Wednesday, September 17 from 10AM - 3PM. Tickets are available at the church office, Black's, Butternuts, and Varney Kitchens.

 From the Music Corner

This Sunday the Kurzweil keyboard will be down front, highlighting different sounds throughout our service, and Kingswood senior Stacey Kelleher will share a solo entitled "Every Season".  Available choir members will also aid in hymn singing and communion music.

  Pat Rankin New Address

Pat Rankin is now residing at Mountainview. Her address is 93 Water Village Road #271, Ossipee, NH 03864. I am sure she would appreciate cards or notes as she recuperates from her stroke.
