Vestry Forum, 9am, Sunday March 10, 2013 -
Political and/or Partisan
|
Many important issues and concerns have surfaced as the Rector Search Committee has held its meetings and gathered parishioners to review the past, talk about the present state of the parish and discern how we might continue to serve God and God's people in the future. The Committee has done community research on some of these issues and concerns, others caused the group to read the gathered wisdom of experts in the field, the interim rector and vestry have been asked to explore these issues.
One issue that has come up repeatedly has been how clergy might best address, avoid and take positions on what are often characterized as "political issues". A sermon, a rather one way form of communications, does not seem the best way to have a discussion, attempt to bring some light to this sometimes "touchy" issue. An open discussion seemed best.
Political and/or Partisan will be the focus of a Vestry Forum, 9am, Sunday March 10, 2013, in the parish undercroft. Grab some refreshment and join us. We do not propose to present final answers on this issue but rather set a context, see if we can discover language that helps us have meaningful conversation about the issue. We might even come up with ways to ask prospective rector candidates how they do, or do not, address "political", often times controversial issues.
Please join us - this one should be interesting!

Rector Search Committee urges Members and Friends to Complete Congregational Survey
|
As of this morning, March 8, 72 people have completed the survey.
Your voice through this survey is important. Broad participation will not only help the Search Committee and Vestry made decisions, but will also send prospective candidates a message that our congregation is fully engaged. If you have not completed the survey please do so as soon as possible. Please urge your family members and friends to also complete the survey. Children who are able to read and understand the survey are very welcome to complete it.
To complete the survey online, follow this link:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WolfeSaints
Again, on Sunday, paper copies of the survey will be available after the 8:00 and 10:00 Sunday services and in the church office during the week. After each Sunday service there will be members of the Search Committee to provide assistance completing the survey either the on-line or the paper version. The survey closes on March 19th. Please complete it sooner rather than later. If you have questions, check with a Search Committee member after any of the Sunday services.

Special Music and Workshops March 17th
| |
Sunday March 17th will be a special day at All Saints parish...and not just for the Irish. On that day we will be joined at the 10:00 am service by Sayon Camara, an African drummer. Sayon, who is from Guinea, is an extremely talented djembefola with an intimate knowledge of the music for all the drums of the Malinke culture. He has led a number of drumming workshops in our undercroft.
Sayon and some of his students will offer the music for the prelude and postludes, four pieces during the service, and will accompany some of the hymns. They will also lead a workshop on African drumming open to the entire Wolfeboro community from 12:30 to 4:00 pm. The day will be capped off by a concert that evening from 5:00 to 6:30 pm in our sanctuary where Sayon will be joined by many of his students and compatriots.
Please mark your calendars, get the word out to your friends and neighbors. Plan to join us. For further information see: http://sayoncamaradrumming.com/

Thursday Healing Service
| |
The Thursday 10am service of Holy Eucharist has been moved to the Children's Chapel to save on energy costs and for a more intimate setting appropriate to the few that gather. More importantly, our hope is to determine what form of worship might more adequately serve God and the people in our community. We often hear that people are concerned about the "disease", lack of wellness, brokenness of our culture and political system. We know that there are many dealing with loss, physical illness and relationships that are not working as they might. All these situations need healing and the Episcopal Church has a service which, in numerous ways, including prayer, readings, oils for healing and the laying on of hands opens us and those we pray for to the Holy Spirit's work of healing. If these concerns are part of your life, please join us for our exploration and prayer for healing.
The lessons read at this service are from the Episcopal Church's new book entitled, Holy Women, Holy Men. Readings are suggested along with the biographies of women and men whose lives point to how the brokenness, disease of this world might be healed.
Please join us.

New Committees - opportunities to ministry and learn together
| |
It is often said that "people do not join a church just to be on another committee". True enough. On the other hand, many parish members want to serve God and God's children and this often takes the gifts, minds, hearts and good will of more than one person.
The interim rector and vestry have been working on forming a number of committees so that more parishioners can be involved in doing ministry, serving our community and sharing leadership. At the annual meeting, we voted to amend our by-laws to specify who might serve annually on the committee to nominate vestry members and officers, representatives to Diocesan councils and how this committee might best go about their work.
The vestry passed a resolution calling for the formation of a worship committee to advise the rector on matters related to worship. That resolution is printed below. Those who serve will include representatives of those already involved in the leadership of worship like the Lay Eucharistic Ministers, altar guild and choir. Membership will also include others who feel called to and wish to contribute in this way. Please read the committee's charge and let us know if you wish to serve.
We are also working on a similar description of a buildings and grounds committee - this is too large a responsibility for one person, the junior warden. We will be forming a group to both reach out to newcomers and nurture the lives of those already members of our parish. We have many forms by which we communicate to parishioners, printed and electronic ones. This important ministry needs re-thinking as we search for a new editor to the Visitor and aim to be as effective as we can be in communicating our message and inviting members to be involved in ministry and service. This parish is involved in extensive and multiple efforts to serve our community and address national and global concerns. If you are interested in coordinating, building and strengthen this work, let us know you wish to be part of an outreach committee. We obviously need a group to assist in the search for a new organist/minister of music.
We will keep you informed as this process unfolds. please let us know how you wish to serve.

Lenten Season Events & Activities
| |
Evening Prayer Weekday Evenings in Lent
Daily thru March 22nd, 5:15 p.m.
Evening Prayer was one of the new services designed and published in the first Anglican Prayer Book. Archbishop Thomas Cranmer (1489-1546) took ancient monastic services and combined them to form Morning and Evening Prayer services. Each parish church received a bible and the clergy were required to lead these services in a language the people could understand reading through the whole of the Old and New Testament each year. It is a service of the Word, the biblical Word, giving the people a chance to hear, be inspired, led, understand the bible for themselves without Church directed interpretation.
Lenten Suppers and Study
Monday evenings during Lent at 6:00 p.m.(soup and sandwich)
6:30 p.m. (study) beginning Monday February 25th, undercroft.
The themes of Lent: prayer, penitence, fasting and the giving of alms are, to some large degree, foreign to our culture so many Episcopal parishes set time aside during Lent for the exploration and experiencing of them. A "lite supper" - soup and bread, cheese and fruit are ways of experiencing fasting. Study and discussion gives us a chance to explore these themes so unfamiliar to contemporary parlance. The Rev Rob Hirschfeld, our new Bishop, has asked those preparing for the annual retreat of the Commission on Ministry to read, The Mystic Way of Evangelism. Though most Episcopalians are into neither mysticism nor evangelism, this is an excellent book and the subjects are very important to our new Bishop who will be visiting and leading our parish for worship on Palm Sunday, March 24th, 2013. The book also lays out one way Episcopal parishes, members and leaders can go about discovering a new and powerful way to be Church in the future. Since none of us know the future into which we are moving but do know that there is a keen interest in spirituality, meditation and service on the part of many who are not yet members of our parishes, we thought that studying this book would be a good way to prepare for the Bishop's visit, get to know something about core issues to him and traditional Lenten themes, we hope you will join us for these discussions. Presentations summarizing the book will make it easier for those not able to read it to be part of our explorations. Please volunteer to make a pot of soup for one of the suppers if you can. All are asked to bring bread or cheese or fruit to share which makes it easier for those coming straight from work to participate. If you prefer to have a sandwich - the All Saints' tradition, bring one.
