Welcome to the Heibel Media Newsletter
June 2015

On June 1 I didn't do something I have done every day for 780 days.  I failed to write a page of new fiction.  I'm a little down about it but streaks can't last forever and now I have a bench mark to shoot for.

June is a great month as I will be with 39 other authors at the Big Rapids Library on Friday June 12 from Noon to 2 p.m. for Authorpalooza.  If you're in Big Rapids come out and see me!

My writing has slowed down overall, but revision is up.  Details below.  Also two new features!  Read on.

Thanks for your support!

Flash Fiction: A New Writing Endeavor

I recently blogged about flash fiction which is a art form that limits a short story to 500 words or less.  I love the form which requires me to really tell the story tightly while requiring you the reader to really imagine the details I can't give you.

Here is my very first flash fiction and I'm curious as to what you think so please let me know by email or Facebook.

Bucket List                                                                                                                     140 Words

Six months to live motivated Dennis to create a bucket list six months ago.  He hacked up a mouthful of blood and phlegm and spit it as far as he could.  It failed to reach the edge of the cliff.   Only two items remained on the list.  Sixty years he had avoided them.  "Face fear of heights" and "Face fear of flying".  Dennis crawled toward the edge.  Panic over the fear of dying usually overwhelmed him at this point, but it wasn't there.  He reached the edge.  The waves crashed over the boulders at the base of the cliff.  He looked over for a few minutes and then stood up and pulled his list from his back pocket. He checked off  "Face fear of heights."  He stared at "Face fear of flying" for a moment.  He checked that off too.

Random Passages from My Books

Each month I'm going to give you a sample of my books direct from their pages.  I'll rotate through the books starting with my oldest writings to my newest.  So from Termination Notice  and the story within titled: GI Joe.
Daniel has a bad experience with a toy GI Joe doll.

Daniel put the doll face down.  He wrapped a band around Joe's ankles and pulled the plastic tight.  Then he pulled Joe's arms back and tied his hands behind his back.  Another tie around Joe's chest kept the arms tight against his sides.  Then Daniel scrounged around in the cabinets and bureaus his father had in the garage until he found a piece of clothesline.

Joe was lying on his back still bound tight when Daniel returned to the bench.  He cut off a small piece of the rope and then made a noose.  He put the noose around Joe's neck and then pulled it tight.  Joe's black eyes glared at him.

Daniel carried the doll into the garage rafters.  There he tied the end of the rope to a nail at the top of the roof.  And there Joe hung until Daniel moved out of the house six years later.

When he moved out at 21, Daniel took Joe down, locked him in a suitcase and in his new house, Daniel hung Joe from the basement ceiling over his own workbench.  When Tricia kicked him out, Joe came with him and was hanging now from the ceiling above the washer in the basement.

 NEW FEATURE!
The Last Thing I Wrote

I thought it'd be fun to share something I had just written.  You'll get no context just the last 100 words of the last thing I worked on before putting out the newsletter.  This is from book 3 of the Gods' Powers Trilogy The Magi Harvest.

The door to the dining hall opened and banged into the wall.  A boy walked in with the confidence of one newly come of age.  He walked straight up to Midrich and smiled.

"Fraynen would you come with me?" the boy said.

"Why?"

"So we can talk privately.  Please come with me."

Midrich followed along and the boy led him through the castle to the throne room where a well groomed Ranzan, the King's Right Hand sat on the throne.

"Welcome mage," said Ranzan.  "We have a lot to catch you up on the first being we have defeated King Trumane and I have taken the reign until his heir is of age and ability to rule.  You are safe but as you can sense your numbers are spare.  This is Ganan the King's mage.  And you are?"

Midrich smiled.   The King was defeated but how great was the loss he wondered.

"I'm Midrich."

 What's On Tap for June?
