Three-year Wilshire Grand
build reaches a new milestone: 'topping out'

Rick Smegelski pulled back the hoist lever with his right hand, calculating how fast his load was rising.
As operator of Tower Crane No. 1 at the construction site for the Wilshire Grand, Smegelski looks upon downtown Los Angeles from his cab, 900 feet above Figueroa Street. Below him stood the signature element of this $1-billion-plus project, the tower, soon to become the tallest structure west of Chicago.

Guard Against Cyber Attacks

A cyber attack, and cyber security measures aimed at fending off, mitigating, and responding to an attack, should not be a concern just for Fortune 500 companies, health care providers, retailers that handle consumer information, and financial institutions. Every business, including contractors, architects, suppliers, and others in the construction industry, must be aware of and take measures to address cybersecurity.

April Safety Tip

One of the most important questions to consider on any jobsite is "how well can others see me?" Wearing the proper amount of high-visibility apparel and, in many cases, the proper color can mean the difference in going home - or not.

Will Metro's tunneling under Los Angeles spur a 710 Freeway tunnel?

A construction worker surveys inside the giant tunnel boring machine named Harriet during the Metro unveiling ceremonial celebration at the Expo Construction yard in Los Angeles Feb. 1. In a few months, Harriet will excavate two twin tunnels for the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project.

All this digging beneath different neighborhoods of Los Angeles, plus the resurrection of Bertha in Seattle, has buoyed those in favor of extending the 710 Freeway underground for cars, possibly trucks, as part of a long-awaited extension from the freeway's end at Valley Boulevard in Alhambra, through El Sereno and South Pasadena to the 134/210 interchange in west Pasadena.

Comedy Corner

Two guys are working for the city. As they went down the street, one would dig a hole--he would dig, dig, dig.

The other would come behind him and fill the hole--fill, fill, fill. The two worked furiously--one digging a hole, the other filling it up again.

A man watching them from the sidewalk couldn't believe how hard they were working, but he also couldn't understand what they were doing.

BREAKING NEWS!

Drunk Driving on the Internet

An article by John Dvorak in the issue of PC Computing magazine described a bill going through Congress that would make it illegal to use the internet while drunk, or even to discuss sexual matters over a public network.
The bill is numbered 040116, and the contact person is listed as Lirpa Sloof. Passage of the bill is felt to be certain because "Who wants to come out and support drunkenness and computer sex?"
Dvorak explained that the bill had come about because the Internet was often referred to as an "Information Highway." He noted that, "Congress apparently thinks being drunk on a highway is bad no matter what kind of highway it is."

Californians are paying less in gas taxes, and much less at the pump, as oil prices have plummeted. While that may pad drivers' wallets, the result could be what officials are calling a "catastrophic" impact on the Golden State's highways and city streets.
