710 Freeway Connector in Long Beach
to Close for Two and a Half Years
The connector between the southbound Long Beach (710) Freeway and westbound Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach will be closed for 30 months beginning today as part of the $1.2 billionGerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Project.
"We have spent the past several months preparing for this closure, and have made key improvements to ensure a smooth flow of traffic along the detour route," said John Pope of the Port of Long Beach. "However, we recognize that closing this connector may cause some impacts, and we encourage motorists to use alternate routes if they have the option."

Unemployment falls to seven-year low of 9.4 percent.
The unemployment rate in construction dropped to the lowest April level in seven years as contractors added 32,000 workers to payrolls in April, bringing industry employment to 6.0 million, the highest level since June 2009, according to an analysis of new government data by the Associated General Contractors of America. BURBANK - Caltrans today broke ground on the $355 million Interstate 5 Empire Project, which will add more than four miles of new carpool lanes on Interstate 5, provide motorists easier access to Bob Hope Airport and elevate railroad tracks to eliminate vehicle collisions with trains.
"Caltrans is investing almost $3 billion in 17 projects to make driving less stressful and safer along Interstate 5 in Los Angeles County," said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. "We're repairing the highways and bridges you drive on. We're building carpool lanes to reduce congestion and save fuel. And, every one of these projects is an economic driver that provides jobs."
The I-5 Empire Project will add 2.2 miles of carpool lanes in each direction between Magnolia Boulevard and Buena Vista Street; construct a new interchange at Empire Avenue; and reconstruct the Burbank Boulevard overcrossing. Caltrans will also raise the railroad tracks adjacent to Empire Avenue and at Buena Vista Street and San Fernando Boulevard to eliminate train-vehicle collisions and delays.

At the urging of his doctor, Bill moved to California for health reasons.
After settling in, he met a neighbor, George, who was about the same age as Bill, and looked to be in pretty good health.
"Say, is California really a healthy place?" asked Bill.
"It sure is," the man replied. "When I first arrived here I couldn't say one word. I had hardly any hair on my head. I didn't have the strength to walk across a room and I had to be lifted out of bed."
"That's wonderful!" said Bill. "How long have you been here?"
George replied, "I was born here."
