Behind the Grand Pour:
Building L.A.'s new tallest tower
Orchestrating the massive concrete pour for the foundation of the New Wilshire Grand tower was the job of a lifetime.
Over the next three years, workers will raise the New Wilshire Grand tower 1,100 feet above the corner of Figueroa Street and Wilshire Boulevard. With an open promenade and an enormous swoop of glass above the entrance, this translucent airplane wing 73 stories tall promises to redefine architectural possibilities in a city

Structural Integrity
(After 37 years, the Real Story comes out.)
When it was built in 1977, Citicorp Center (later renamed Citigroup Center, now called 601 Lexington) was, at 59 stories, the seventh-tallest building in the world.
But it's the base of the building that really makes the tower so unique. The bottom nine of its 59 stories are stilts. (and so the story goes)
BUT................
And NOW for the rest of this "Hollywood type drama".
Learn what the drastic complications were that arose from the engineering of this job, and what was done to correct the deficiencies in the construction of this building.
You won't believe how this story unfolds!

Kogod school of business has come up with its method for rating a cars
"Made in America" quotient.
The Kogod Made in America Auto Index was assembled by Associate Professor Frank DuBois, an expert in global supply chain management, at American University's Kogod School of Business. Among other sources, the data was compiled from publicly-disclosed American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA) reports as of February 2014, and accounts for the following factors:
- Profit Margin: Where the automaker's global headquarters is located
- Labor: Where the car is assembled
- Research and Development
- Inventory, Capital, and Other Expenses: Location of assembly
- Engine and Transmission: Location of production
- Body, Interior, Chassis, Electrical, and Other: Location of production
- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration AALA "Domestic Content" Score

Good Sportsmanship
At one point during a game, the Little League coach called aside one of his 7-year-old players and asked,
"Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?"
The little boy nodded.
"Do you understand that what matters is not whether we win or lose, but that we have fun together as a team?"
The boy nodded.
"So," the coach continued, "I'm sure you know that when an out is called, you shouldn't argue, curse or attack the umpire. Nor should you call him a 'A-hole.' Do you understand all that?"
Again, the boy nodded.
The coach continued, "And when I take you out of the game so another boy gets a chance to play, it's bad sportsmanship to call your coach 'a dumb jerk,' isn't it?"
For the fourth time, the boy nodded.
"Good," said the coach. "Now go over there and explain all that to your mother."

This Concrete-Eating Robot Can Recycle An Entire Building On The Spot
Knocking down a concrete building usually takes brute force: Wrecking balls, huge excavators, or explosives rip apart walls while fire hoses spray water to keep the clouds of dust down. It's an energy-intensive process, and after everything's been torn apart, the concrete often ends up in a landfill or has to be trucked to a recycling facility. But a new concrete-erasing robot may eventually transform the messy business of demolition.
