An estimated $788 million investment in infrastructure upgrades at California's Port of Long Beach created between 3,000 to 5,000 construction jobs in 2013, said Al Moro, the port's acting executive director. The projects undertaken include redeveloping the Middle Harbor to create a megaterminal from two smaller ones and replacing the Gerald Desmond Bridge. Cargo volume has steadily increased at the port, where more than seven million units are expected next year. The "economy is getting better, and the Port of Long Beach is leading the way," said Moro.

Cement Forecast Upbeat at 2014 World of Concrete
This year's outlook for the construction industry was looking rosy as crowds gathered on the first day of the 40th World of Concrete show, which opened its doors on Jan. 21 in Las Vegas to 50,000 anticipated attendees, 1,000 exhibitors and more than 100 educational seminars.

Wilshire Grand Finally Breaks Ground
on the Tallest U.S. Building West of the Mississippi.
When the new Wilshire Grand hotel breaks ground in Los Angeles on Feb. 15, its developers also plan to break the record in the Guinness Book of World Records for the "longest continuous concrete" placement for its foundation. Over three days, 24,000 cubic yards of concrete will be placed, according to Conco, the firm doing the mat foundation. The $1.1 billion project will also become the West Coast's tallest structure at 1,100 feet tall once it is completed.

Seven Los Angeles School Structures
Will Get Seismic Upgrades
At least seven Los Angeles school structures have a type of concrete construction believed to be vulnerable to collapse from earthquake shaking, a Los Angeles Unified School District official acknowledged. The LAUSD says it will examine a new inventory of buildings to see if additional older concrete structures may be vulnerable
