What Danforth Avenue used to look like

November 2012

Michelle Brienza
Last month I discussed Toronto's real estate market becoming more balanced - and here's more on the story: condo sales and prices are down slightly, but houses are still climbing.

I'm puzzled as to why condo sales are down, especially when there's such a shortage of rentals in Toronto which would indicate an investment opportunity. Scroll down for an article about bidding wars on condo rentals!

Blogto.com recently published a photo essay on Danforth Avenue, with some great historical images.

Lastly, thank you to everyone who donated or came out to October's fundraiser, we raised ... for Juls care and education.

Housing slowdown cools Toronto condo sales, prices - but single-family homes keep defying gravity

Toronto has become the tale of two housing markets - high-rise condos where sales, and now prices, have been slumping and houses where prices continue to defy gravity.

We're used to seeing bidding wars in Toronto's hotter neighbourhoods, but now bidding wars are happening over condo rentals!

What Danforth Avenue used to look like in Toronto

It'd be fair to say that there's been something of a west-side bias to the collection of historical posts we've published over the years, so by way of increasing the breadth of our history series I'll be taking a look at some important east-side street and neighbourhoods over the next little bit.

Up first, perhaps naturally, is Danforth Avenue. First built in the 1850s, the street is named after the man originally commissioned to build a route that headed east from Scarborough towards Trenton.

Culinary walking tours are a great way to sample Toronto's culinary diversity

Urban centres in the United States have long cashed in on the public's appetite for food tours but Toronto, until recently, has had only a couple of players. In the past two years, however, food tours have popped up to guide visitors and locals through the tastes of various neighbourhoods.

For example, Tasty Tours founder Audrey Ooi has offered a sweets tour through Kensington Market and a chocolate tour in the Trinity-Bellwoods stretch of Queen St. W. for a year.
