Greetings!
February is the month of love. But why do we celebrate Valentine's Day? What is the origin this day? It is somewhat unclear but the name goes back to the Catholic St. Valentine. However there were several St. Valentines who were martyred one was a priest, the other a bishop and third of whom little is known.
One legend of St. Valentine was that in the third century, he defied the Roman Emperor 's orders that single soldiers could not get married. The emperor believed that single men made better soldiers. St. Valentine thought that soldiers should be allowed to marry the one they loved. He was executed for his belief.
My favorite is another legend that St. Valentine was martyred for his Christian beliefs, and before he died he wrote a love note to his a loved one that was signed "From your Valentine. Be mine"
Some say it grew out of the Middle Ages tradition of celebrating February 14th as a day when the birds begin to pair.
Whatever the reason, this is a wonderful month to tell those your love that you love them. Happy Valentine's Day!
