Here is some of their story...
" We spent our first day at the Gunjur Project where we were met by a huge queue of people waiting to be tested. We managed to help over 80 people but unfortunately our day came to an end before everyone could be seen.
In Gambia, usually only the very rich can afford an eye test, so the offer of a free test provided by a charity obviously gains a huge amount of interest in the surrounding areas.
From Gunjur we moved upcountry to a little village named Jappineh where the charity has built its largest Health Clinic and a school. In the area there is no other form of medical care or schooling available to the local community, and so this clinic is vital and is at the heart of the area.
When we arrived this year, to show their appreciation, they had built us an Eye Clinic complete with testing and dispensing rooms which helped immensely - and also ensured our continued support!
We finished the week off by testing local school children at a variety of schools around the capital Banjul.
Lenstec donated 200 lensed pairs of spectacles which were particularly useful as they were ready to wear and in very common prescriptions which covered a large proportion of people.
Donations from other suppliers including a large number of children's frames, lens blanks and some glazing equipment for the General Hospital were also kindly given along with a large number of light loupes donated from returned stock from a number of local hospitals.
All in all it was a very successful and rewarding trip and once again a big Thank You to Lenstec for their support!" |
