WILL YOU INVEST IN THE POWER OF OUR GIRLS?
There is a thriving economic society locally. In this society there are businesses being started, business plans being written, employees being hired and goods and services being produced. There is even an IPO taking place. There are incentives for saving money, and other than for emergency loans, no one spends more than they have in the bank. If this does not sound like the Sarasota community you know, take a closer look at the award-winning programs of Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County.
This year along with several businesses including Tervis Tumblers, Icard, Merrill, Cullis, Timm, Furen, Whole Foods Market, Publix Supermarket Charities, Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP, The Observer Group, Wood, Seitl and Anderson, Sarasota Magazine, Nickel Communications, Alex Stafford Photography that are

investing in the girls at Girls Incorporated. "Invest in the Power of Girls" is an awareness campaign launched on November 8th at the Longboat Key Club with over 150 business representatives. The campaign focuses on how a small investment by the local business community and individuals can result in long term returns of investments from the girls of Girls Inc. To follow the progress of investment dollars donors can log on or subscribe to feeds from powerofgirls.org which is a website within the Girls Inc. website designed to follow the girl's journey through the programs and to show benchmarks of progress like creating excel spreadsheets, doing a job performance review, learning how to speak in front of groups of people and learning conflict resolution.
At Girls Inc., girls ages 5-14 learning not only about running a business but also about making eye contact, presenting themselves with a handshake, being a member of a team, learning from mistakes and working together to find solutions. The goal is to ensure the girls are the future employees of Sarasota County and will enter into the workplace prepared for all challenges. |

Mote Marine and Girls Inc. Partner To Bring Girl Power to Science Education This joint program is designed to share science with girls by introducing them to marine animals, environments and real mentors - female scientists at Mote. Our new partnership was created to support girls in STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). This is an important step toward opening more STEM careers to girls.
The Mote/Girls Inc. program started out with a six-week segment about sea turtles. The girls are now in segment 2 focusing on manatees. They are learning all about the care and training of these quiet giants. Our 4th and 5th graders completed 5 weeks of classroom programs taught by visiting Mote educators and even invited our 2nd and 3rd graders to role play these newly-learned training procedures. (The little ones had fun playing manatees!) The girls are preparing for their next trip to Mote Marine in a few days. The girls will continue to enjoy other six-week segments throughout the school year focusing on sharks and other animal species and marine habitats, finishing each segment with a field trip to The Aquarium at Mote or a trek into the natural habitat. |
Thank you Girls Inc. VOLUNTEERS!
You know who you are...always there when we need you, always willing to lend a hand to the girls, the staff, the families and ALWAYS APPRECIATED! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
A very special thank you to Concession Charities for another year of "Project: Santa's Helpers" for our families. After the families in need created their wish lists, our wonderful staff/volunteers went on a shopping spree at Target. The gifts were loaded into a truck donated by Jay and Beth Vandroff and neatly organized for pickup. Special thanks to The Community Foundation of Sarasota County, YPG, CYD and friends of MaryLou Johnson for helping wrap the presents and bring holiday cheer to our families.
Thank you to the following donors who have adopted 17 of our families so far this holiday season.

And the Votes Are In....
In early November, girls of all ages are participated in She Votes, the National Girls Inc initiative designed to engage girls in the elections so they will see themselves as future voters and officeholders!
Through this program, girls gain enthusiasm for taking part in this election personally and are empowered to be responsible citizens. In true Girls Inc fashion, our goal is to reflect real life through research-based, age appropriate and gender specific programming.

The month culminated with our own elections on Super Tuesday, November 6! Eighteen girls ran for office. These candidates ran their own campaigns, complete with lessons on ethics and positive platforms! They are all winners in our book!

GIRLS ON THE RUN
Our season is quickly coming to an end. The teams at Phillippi Shores and Venice Elementary have learned about nutrition, healthy stress management, conflict resolution, dealing with rumors, gossip and bullying, being a good community citizen and many more topics as they have physically trained for a 5K. For their program graduation, the girls will be participating in the Sandy Claws Beach Run on Saturday morning, December 8 at Siesta Key Beach. We invite you to come out and cheer on these amazing 3rd, 4th and 5th grade girls. Girls on the Run is so much FUN!!

Ms. Tricia's Treats
I moved to Sarasota in April 2005 from Atlanta, Georgia and upstate New York. There is one thing I miss about both places, driving to the mountains and going to the fall apple festivals. I would bring home a bunch of fresh apples and make my apple pie, baked apples, and apple sauce. I have been delighting my family and friends with my Apple Pie recipe for many years, and I wanted to share it with you. Right after I moved to Sarasota, my son called me for this recipe. Not only did I share my warm and cozy pie recipe with him, I got a very special mom warm and cozy feeling. Enjoy! ~ Ms. Tricia
Mom's Apple Pie
Pastry for two-crust 9 inch pie, use your favorite recipe, or a store-bought refrigerator pie dough.
- 6-8 large apples (tart green, such as Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/4 cup brown sugar firmly packed
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon*
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg*
- 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
- Combine apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss well to coat.
- Turn mixture into pie crust.
- Dot apples with butter.
- Cover with top crust and fold top crust under bottom crust edge. Crimp** around the edge to seal crusts together.
- Make slits in the top crust for steam to escape.
- Place pie on a baking sheet, and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until crust is golden brown. If edges start to get too brown, cover edges with aluminum foil.
- Let pie set at least one hour before slicing to allow filling time to set.
*You can use less cinnamon and nutmeg if you like.
**Crimp - To pinch or press two pastry edges together, therby sealing the dough while forming a decorative edge with fingers (forefinger and thumb), fork or other utensil.
