including Tervis Tumblers and Whole Foods Market. These collaborations allow us to guarantee that our girls are getting the work force education they need to be successful members of our community. Our girls are getting award winning afterschool programs like MicroSociety and national Girls Inc. programming which fit hand-in-hand and teach everything from business etiquette and budgeting to conflict resolution and mediation.
These award winning programs do not come without a significant financial investment. The investment we are asking from individuals and businesses is to see the girl's future and see what a relatively small investment by all of us can translate into large savings not only on the social service sector but in the girl's economic power if educated on how to budget and invest.
Financially speaking, Girls Inc. is no exception to difficult times we have all endured during a down economy. Here is what we have accomplished so far:
- Girls Inc. did not increase our debt during the last fiscal year.
- We arrived at financially manageable settlement and repayment program with the Nadel Receivership
- Administrative expenses were reduced year over year by 6.2%.
All of these items were strategic and fiscally responsible actions on the part of the board. We continued to see an increased demand for our services by families requiring financial support through scholarships. The economic conditions are continuing to impact our families and as a result, our allocated scholarship dollars for the 2012/2013 school year were exhausted very quickly. With the search for the new executive director in full swing, we are poised to enter the new year with a clear plan to accomplish our financial goals.

25th Annual Celebration Luncheon Announcement!
Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County is pleased to announce that Johanna Gustafsson and Chris Pinckney have been named the 2013 Chairs of the 25th Annual Celebration Luncheon to be held on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota.
This is the second time Ms. Gustafsson, who is currently a board member, has co-chaired the Celebration Luncheon. Mr. Pinckney chaired the "2011 Fore the Girls" Golf Tournament and has remained an avid advocate of Girls Inc. Ms. Gustafsson and Mr. Pinckney are husband and wife and operate a Wealth Management team with Merrill Lynch. In addition to supporting Girls Inc., Mr. Pinckney also serves as the Board Chairman for ITNSarasota and Ms. Gustafsson is a member of the Forty Carrots Advisory Council.
"Johanna and I feel strongly about presenting the 25th Annual Luncheon as an opportunity to educate the community about the difference that an investment in the lives of young girls can have on our community. As advocates and long-time supporters, we feel more compelled than ever to ensure that everyone is aware of the work being done at Girls Inc. Every girl going through the program at Girls Inc. has enormous potential to become a future business leader in this community and we are thrilled to be a part of an event that highlights their extraordinary efforts."
Tickets for the luncheon are $85. For Reservations to the Celebration Luncheon please contact Patti Eisemann at 366-6646 x 211. |

What a pleasure it was to welcome shoe designer and entrepreneur, Diana Kelly on her recent visit to Girls Inc. Diana introduced her "Flats for Philanthropy" initiative to perpetuate her company mission "building stronger communities, one step at a time". Her first Flat for Philanthropy, a red ballet flat, was launched at Girls Inc. on October 8th and the girls were so excited to be a part of it! Ten percent of the proceeds from the sale of this shoe will be, graciously, donated back to Girls Inc.
Thank you, Diana!

MOTE AND GIRLS INC PARTNER TO BRING GIRL POWER TO SCIENCE EDUCATION This joint program, which began this fall, is taking place throughout each school year and is designed to share science with girls by introducing them to marine animals, environments and real mentors - female scientists at Mote. Our new partnership was created to support girls in STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). This is an important step toward opening more STEM careers to girls.
The Mote/Girls Inc. program started out with a six-week segment about sea turtles - endangered and threatened marine reptiles that nest on local beaches, where Mote scientists have led sea turtle research and conservation for more than three decades. Our 4th and 5th graders completed 5 weeks of classroom programs taught by visiting educators. Their recent field trip to Mote culminated the first segment of their program. The girls will continue to enjoy other six-week segments throughout the school year focusing on manatees, sharks, other animal species and marine habitats, finishing each segment with a field trip to The Aquarium at Mote or a trek into the natural habitat.

County Commissioner Patterson and the Dream Harbor girls that are running for office. |
Girls Rock the Vote: She Votes
This month, girls of all ages are participating in She Votes, the National Girls Inc initiative designed to engage girls in the elections so they will see themselves as future voters and officeholders!
Through this program, girls gain enthusiasm for taking part in this election personally and are empowered to be responsible citizens. In true Girls Inc fashion, our goal is to reflect real life through research-based, age appropriate and gender specific programming.
 | | Thank you, Mayor Atwell, for your recent visit to Girls Inc.! |
The month's focus will culminate with our own elections on Super Tuesday, November 6! That's right, 18 of our own girls have decided to run for office. Government offices include Mayor, Vice Mayor, Historian, Secretary and Treasurer. These candidates are running their own campaigns, complete with lessons on ethics and positive platforms!

From Ms. Tricia's Kitchen...
Our girls love my Shepherd's Pie and always beg me to make it. When Shepherd's Pie is for snack, they give a big, "YES" with a rally-type, fist-pump. They prefer the pie with corn rather than English style with peas and carrots. I also use ground turkey, but I've never told them that... I guess I have made it at least once a month. So, after five years of cooking for our girls at Girls Incorporated, I've made Shepherd's Pie approximately sixty times for 140 girls each time. Enjoy!
Tricia
Shepherd's Pie
Yield: Makes 6-8 servings
Ingredients:
Meat mixture:
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 pounds ground beef or ground lamb or ground turkey
½ teaspoon granulated garlic
1 package French onion soup mix
1 can (10 ¾ oz.) cream of mushroom soup or cream of celery soup
1 can (14 oz.) beef broth
Salt and pepper to taste
Mashed potatoes:
2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
½ cup milk
Salt to taste
2 cups canned corn or frozen peas
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
Optional: Fresh chopped parsley to sprinkle on top of pie before serving
Preparation:
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat the oil, and then add the meat and garlic. Cook until browned, 8 to 10 minutes.
- Drain the fat. Add the soup mix, mushroom soup, and beef broth. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until mixture thickens.
- Pour the mixture into a 13x9x2-inch baking dish.
- Bring the potatoes to a boil in salted water. Cook until tender, about 20 minutes; drain.
- Mash the potatoes with the butter, milk, and salt.
- Sprinkle the corn (or peas) over the top of the beef mixture.
- Spoon the mashed potatoes over the beef and corn and cover completely. Crosshatch the top of the potatoes with a fork.
- Bake until heated through and slightly golden about 25-30 minutes.
- Remove from oven and sprinkle top of potatoes with cheese.
- Place back in oven and cook until cheese is melted.
Options:
- Combine the corn (or peas) into the meat mixture instead of layering them.
- Use already prepared store-bought mashed potatoes or boxed mashed potatoes.
- Can be prepared the night before, and refrigerated. Bake covered with aluminum foil for about one hour or until heated through. Take foil off and bake another 10 minutes to brown the top, then sprinkle with cheese and bake until cheese is melted.
For additional taste and color, add shredded carrots to the raw meat and cook with the meat.
