Fire Prevention Tips

Residential fires make up 80% of the fire losses each year.

Most of those start in the kitchen. Some kicthen tips:

  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking on the stove top.
  • Check on baking and roasting items at regular intervals.
  • Wear close fitting clothes while cooking.  Loose and dangling fabric can catch fire.  Remember: if your clothing catches fire - STOP, DROP, and ROLL until the flames are out.
  • Keep towels, potholders, and oven mitts away from the stove.
  • Keep pan handles turned in over the stove top.
  • Use splatter guards when frying foods.
  • Keep your stove and oven clean to prevent old spills from sparking.

Other household safety tips:

  • Change batteries in your smoke detectors twice a year.
  • Clean out dryer vents to prevent build up and overheating.
  • Inspect cords on powered items for fraying. Replace any items with exposed wires.
  • Have chimneys cleaned yearly to remove soot, blockages, and other buildup.
  • Plan escape routes from every room in your home and review regularly with members of your family.

In the event you do suffer a fire, you can reference our Fire Emergency Checklist to minimize your loss.  ServiceMaster Recovery Services strands ready to respond 24 hours a day for board up service, emergency pre-cleaning, deodorization, fire mitigation, and repairs to your home or business.
