Hurricane Season:
Far Reaching Effects
While the official hurricane season began on June 1st, activity ramps up in the latter part of summer and into early fall. Historically, 80% - or more - of hurricanes occur between August and October, according to information provided by The Weather Channel. The 2013 season is predicted to have a higher than normal amount of hurricane and tropical "named" storm activity due to above average surface temperature and other factors.
Beyond concern for loved ones in the volatile regions, as inlanders we have little need to keep abreast of the stirrings in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Or do we?
Inland areas can experience significant damage due to hurricanes. Rain can be measured up to 10 inches several hundred miles from the initial point of landfall of a hurricane. Wind speeds attained in hurricanes normally diminish once over land, however in some cases remain above 60 mph and actually increase when joined with other weather fronts. Waves in Lake Michigan can reach as high as 25 feet and cause lakeshore flooding. A late season storm can even increase the amount snowfall in our area. Near hurricane-like storms can occur when warm and cold fronts collide, as recently witnessed in severe storms happening across the plains in Nebraska, Kansas, and surrounding areas. These events are often accompanied by tornadoes, hail, lightning, thunder, high winds, and massive rainfall, which can cause serious damage.
All good reasons to pay close attention to the hurricane alerts in the future. |
