April 15th is approaching and many of us are in the final stages of filing our 2015 taxes. If you obtained your health insurance through Covered California, California's state exchange, during 2015, you need to give your tax preparer/accountant your 1095-A form. Your tax preparer will than be able to fill out IRS tax form 8962 (which lists the premium tax credit) . 1095 forms

Those who have obtained health insurance outside the exchange or enrolled in an employer health plan will receive a 1095-B, or a 1095-C form (for employers with over 50 employees), which serves as proof of carrying health insurance. This form should be treated as a tax document but does not need to be filled with your taxes. You need to check a box on your tax form indicating that you carried minimum essential coverage throughout the year. In the event you missed several months of coverage, you need to file IRS tax from 8965.

What is the Special Enrollment Period and how can I obtain health insurance?

We are currently in the Special Enrollment Period, February 1st through October 31,2016, during which time you cannot make any changes to your health insurance plan. However, there are some exceptions for qualifying life events such as birth of child, marriage, gaining citizenship, loss of a job with health coverage, or moving into a service area which gives you 60 days to obtain health coverage.

Please be advised that a cancellation due to non-payment of an insurance premium, does not qualify as a special life event. Therefore, it is critical that your insurance premium are paid on time. If you don't qualify for the Special Enrollment Period, you can only receive health coverage through a short term insurance plan, which is not ACA compliant and may result in a tax penalty .

Affordable Vision Insurance for $ 10.67 per month
Many of us require eyeglasses or contact lenses. With the increasing cost of eye exams and glasses, it makes sense to buy vision insurance. I located a vision insurance policy from Secure Life for $ 10.67 a month , which covers an annual eye exam for $ 25 ,1 pair of new glasses every other year and annual lenses. Lenscrafters, Target, Sears are some of the providers of the national EyeMed network, which includes 78,000 vision care providers with a broad selection of choices - from independent providers to major retail chains.

During the Special Enrollment Time it is critical to pay your monthly premium. You should your check your credit card and bank statements monthly to confirm that your premium payments for your health insurance coverage have been drawn.

Enjoy this wonderful Spring Time and go out for a hike.

Remember love, laughter and good times are the best medicine for you.
