Greetings!

As I write this greeting, we are grieving and questioning another mass shooting, this latest in our nation's capital.  It will not go unnoticed that the shooter was once a member of the Navy (news reports say he was discharged in 2011).  We may never know the motivation behind this heinous act but we should be careful not to presume it was service-related. These are incomprehensible situations that tear at our hearts and minds.

Give an Hour will continue to expand our services, tapping into our vast network of mental health professionals, whenever there is a need, such as after these shootings at the Navy Yard or with other recent tragedies such as Sandy Hook, Hurricane Sandy, and the Boston Marathon bombings.

Our services have always been, and will continue to be, free in the aftermath of tragedies, just as they are to members of the military, veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, their loved ones, and their communities.

Thank you for all you do to assist in this mission.

Take Care,

Barbara Van Dahlen, Ph.D.

Give an Hour Stands Ready to Provide Free Mental Health Services to Victims, Families, and First Responders of Navy Yard Shootings

Give an Hour is expanding its reach to include victims, families, and first responders dealing with the aftermath of the shootings at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.

"We will learn more details about this situation as things unfold in the coming days and weeks.  When the community is ready, Give an Hour plans to step up and offer mental health services to anyone, including young children, affected by the tragic event at the Navy Yard," says Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, founder and president of Give an Hour.

While primarily focused on members of the military, veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, and their families, Give an Hour has expanded its services to assist in the aftermath of such tragedies as the Sandy Hook shootings, Hurricane Sandy, the Boston Marathon bombings and the explosions in West, Texas.  "With thousands of licensed mental health professionals on our national network, Give an Hour has the capacity to help those who are experiencing grief, loss, and anxiety as a result of these horrible events, and we want to do our part," adds Dr. Van Dahlen.

Tigers Pitcher Justin Verlander Commits $1 Million to Support

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans and Families

Detroit Tigers All-Star pitcher Justin Verlander joined the Detroit Tigers Foundation, an affiliate of Ilitch Charities, to announce a commitment of $1 million to launch an initiative called Wins for Warriors. Dedicated to supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans and their families, the initiative will focus on Detroit, Mich.; Richmond, Va.; and Norfolk, Va.

Growing up outside of Richmond, and pitching for Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Justin was surrounded by two of the largest military populations in the country.  Reports indicate that as many as one in three Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who experience combat will eventually experience significant mental health challenges. Sadly, many do not seek help because of the stigma associated with receiving mental health care. In Justin's words, "my vision is to help erase the stigma around veterans and their families that seek mental health services and join together to provide the support they need."

Wins for Warriors is devoted to sustaining a variety of successful programs that work with veterans and their families along the process for recovery because one size does not fit all. Over the next year, funds will be distributed to two best-in class national organizations that have the expertise to make a long-term impact on this population in the target markets: Give an Hour and The Mission Continues.

"The Detroit Tigers organization commends Justin for the launch of his Wins for Warriors program and his overall dedication to the veterans and their families in Detroit, Norfolk, and Richmond," said Tigers President, CEO, and General Manager David Dombrowski. "Justin's new initiative is another example of his commitment to helping those veterans who have sacrificed so much for our country."

Partnering with Wins for Warriors, Give an Hour will launch two new positions on the ground in Detroit and the Richmond/Norfolk markets to coordinate services in these regions and provide additional mental health support and care to the military communities there. Founder and President, Barbara Van Dahlen, Ph.D., said, "We are grateful to Wins for Warriors and to Justin Verlander for recognizing the needs of our military and veteran community. Justin clearly understands the importance of reaching our service members and veterans in the communities in which they live, and he is willing to use his celebrity to ensure that these men, women, and families have access to the care they need and deserve. We have seen the impact that Justin has had on Major League Baseball, and we are excited to work with him as we create a comprehensive and integrated system of care for the men, women, and families who serve our country."

The Mission Continues awards community service fellowships to post-9/11 veterans, empowering them to transform their own lives by serving others and directly supporting their communities.

The organization has been successful in dramatically improving the well-being of veterans, helping them develop a sense of purpose and identity outside military service. Partnering with Wins for Warriors, three new fellowships will be created, one from each of the three target regions.  Army Veteran Meredith Knopp, Vice President of Programs at The Mission Continues, said, "Justin's support will enable veterans who have a passion for community service to redeploy on a new mission here at home. These veterans are tremendous leaders, who--given this kind of opportunity--are ready to tackle and solve tough problems facing their local communities. We recognize the long-term impact on a veteran's successful transition is a win-win for the nation, and is only made possible through generous contributions of partners like Justin and Win for Warriors."

Among the many expert advisers who assisted Wins for Warriors in developing the program and who will continue to provide counsel in the future are Paul Rieckhoff, Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), and Jeff Underwood, President, Lakeshore Foundation.

Wins for Warriors also launched an online fundraising campaign through Crowdrise to raise more support for these programs through the end of the regular season.  Fans are encouraged to support the cause by raising funds that will be matched by Justin.   Incentives throughout the five-week campaign include a chance to participate in an on-field event prior to a game during the 2014 season, receive a signed baseball, and watch a game from Justin's private suite in 2014.

MilitaryConnection.com: Comprehensive Resource for Military, Reserve, Veterans, and Those Who Support Them

MilitaryConnection.com, a media partner of Give an Hour, provides one of the most comprehensive online directories of resources and information for all branches of active duty military, including the National Guard and Reserve, veterans, and those who support them. There are thousands of pages and databases, with something for everyone, all of it available free to users.

Among the major areas of focus on the website are Employment and Education. MilitaryConnection.com specializes in connecting members of the military community with top employers through a Virtual Job Fair, a Job Board, and a listing of Live Job Fairs. They also have hundreds of valuable job tip articles for those seeking employment, covering A to Z,  from Interview Questions to What to Wear to a Military Job Fair

The portal of all things military also works with a number of colleges and universities, many of them Yellow Ribbon schools, all of which value the service and sacrifices made by our nation's military, past and present.

The website also has an area devoted entirely to veterans, those who have answered the call to serve their country, and military spouses, who are often times the unsung heroes of the military family. The site maintains directories of benefits, commissaries, pay and retirement calculators, and a "helpful links" database.

The company's commitment to working with Give an Hour, as well as many other outstanding nonprofit organizations, truly demonstrates its efforts to share time and resources in support of the military community. CEO Debbie Gregory, the daughter of a service-disabled veteran, knows first-hand the sacrifices made by those who serve and their families. She says the best part of her job is using the reach of MilitaryConnection.com to do what she truly enjoys: assisting veterans, active duty military, their families, and a number of nonprofits.

The Run for Veterans Heads Home to Washington, D.C.

L-R: Give an Hour's Erin Timmermans with Brendan O'Toole and
Joey Dwyer of the Run for Veterans

We have followed with great interest Brendan O'Toole's run across America, which began last Veteran's Day in Oceanside, California. Brendan, who completed four years of service as a Marine last June, is the founder of the Run For Veterans.

Brendan's idea in running across the country was to personally connect with communities and individuals along the way to generate awareness and support for young veterans who served as he did in Afghanistan or Iraq and to let those veterans know that organizations like Give an Hour are available to help them with mental health issues they may confront in transitioning back to civilian life.

Brendan is now heading to Virginia on the homeward leg of his 3,600-mile run. His friends in Alexandria, his hometown, are planning a homecoming celebration to honor Brendan and his team on October 4. Proceeds from this fundraising event will benefit the Run For Veterans' charitable partners Give an Hour, Team Red White & Blue, and the USO.

APA President Donald Bersoff and
Barbara Van Dahlen
Barbara Van Dahlen Awarded
American Psychological Association's Presidential Citation

Give an Hour is proud to announce that Barbara Van Dahlen, its founder and president, was awarded the Presidential Citation during the American Psychological Association's 2013 Annual Conference, held in August in Honolulu, Hawaii.

APA President Donald N. Bersoff presented the Presidential Citation to Dr. Van Dahlen  for her devotion to the treatment of psychologically wounded veterans returning from war and her dedication to psychology. Dr. Bersoff noted, "Although she is a clinical psychologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of children, Dr. Van Dahlen is renowned for her efforts in serving those

who have served this country."

One of Dr. Bersoff's three major presidential initiatives is to ensure that psychologists are at the forefront of providing services to our country's military personnel, veterans, their families, and military service people who have experienced sexual trauma. Through this initiative, he hopes to increase attention to the research and practice aspects of providing services to military personnel and their families.

"While I have received many awards and recognition for my work in the field of military mental health, it is particularly gratifying to be recognized by my peers," says Barbara Van Dahlen.  "I am honored to be a part of this esteemed group of mental health professionals who recognize the importance of research, education, and training and who have been at the forefront of ensuring our military members, their families, and their communities have access to appropriate mental health services."

Documentary Discusses Overmedication in the Military

The post-film Q&A will focus on one of the main themes in the film: how can we fix the problem of overmedication in our military? The panel will feature top thinkers on this issue, including Lieutenant General Eric Schoomaker (former Surgeon General of the U.S. Army), Lieutenant General David Fridovich (featured in the film), and Dr. Wayne Jonas (featured in the film), and will be moderated by filmmaker Matthew Heineman.

Give an Hour Travels to San Antonio

As the needs of our warriors and their family members grow, it is paramount that mental health clinicians be fully equipped to serve those who have sacrificed greatly during their time in military service and who feel the effects of war long after their boots are removed. To respond to this need, Give an Hour traveled to San Antonio, Texas, on September 11 to host a free and unique educational opportunity for mental health providers.

During the day-long training, one of

Give an Hour's new clinical specialists,

Dr. Cheyenne Pease-Carter,

highlighted cultural aspects of military life that may affect the clinical encounter and reviewed key topics such as PTS, traumatic brain injuries, military sexual trauma, and the effects of military service on families.  Additional attention was given to current practices for treating some

of these presenting concerns.

Give an Hour looks forward to extending our circle of connected mental health providers to other professionals in Texas.

Help Raise Awareness about the Psychological Issues Affecting Military Families by Sharing Your Story

Do you have a story about your experience with Give an Hour you'd like to share? Do you know someone else who does? We often receive requests from reporters who would like to talk to people who give or receive services through Give an Hour. Most recently we had a request from our friends at Macy's to feature provider and veteran stories on a local Kentucky TV station. We have also featured providers and veterans in marketing videos and public service announcements. Some veterans who have received services have gone on to share their stories through national media outlets and public speaking engagements. Personal stories underscore the value of the services we provide and go a long way in reducing the stigma so often associated with mental health care.

If you are a veteran, service member, family member, or provider and would like to share your story, please contact Lauren Itzkowitz at litzkowitz@giveanhour.org.
