Parent-Teacher Conferences -Next Tuesday
PTC, No Date

The first Parent-Teacher Conference night is:

Tuesday, October 4, 2016,
5:00 to 8:30 p.m.

As articulated in the Spartan Compact, parent-teacher conferences are an extremely important part of the two-way communication between parents and teachers. Parents interested in checking on their student's progress this fall are asked to take advantage of this day. Conferences are also a place for parents to tell teachers things about their child: How he likes to learn. What she says about the class at home. How he enjoys spending free time. What she says about other students in class.

Teachers will be located in the Spartan and Auditorium Gyms. No appointment is necessary.  Please take the opportunity to meet your son or daughter's teachers, guidance counselor, dean, advisory teacher, activity sponsor, or coach. The school will have Arabic, Polish, and Spanish interpreters available to assist parents. Again this year, staff will be on-hand to assist parents in updating their SchoolMessenger, enrolling to receive the weekly electronic Oak Leaflet Newsletter, and creating a Family Access account for gradebook access.

Representatives from Herff Jones will be in the Spartan Lobby for underclassmen ring orders and graduation materials. The Athletic Booster Club will be selling Spartanwear and related merchandise. The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) and the newly formed Music Booster Association will have information tables. Our new cafeteria vendor, Country House, will have staff available to explain menu options and pricing.

Back by popular demand, OLCHS is hosting Smilin' Clyde's Hotdogs in the Spartan Lobby during Parent-Teacher Conferences. Don't worry about rushing home to eat. Come visit teachers and purchase one of Clyde's famous hotdogs.

Walgreens will be offering free flu shots in the Dance Studio for students and their parents. No appointment is necessary, simply bring in your current insurance card. Contact Gloria in the Nurse's Office with any questions via email at [email protected] or at extension 708/741-5640.

AP US History Students Conduct Mock Salem Witch Trials
Patrick DiFilippo's AP US History courses conducted mock trials of Sarah Good and Rebecca Nurse, who were both tried and executed for witchcraft.  The students analyzed a variety of primary sources to establish this simulated trial and to form a better understanding of how hysteria swept through this small New England village.  Junior Elizabeth Garcia remarked, "I gained great insight about the Salem witch trials and how the evidence was gathered."

The students were engaged and empowered within the classroom. DiFilippo replied, "I love seeing students get into the historical character for this type of activity.  You could tell they were working well in groups, learning from each other, and enjoying the activity."  Jeremy Jeeninga added, "It makes learning fun but at the same time you're learning things that you didn't know before."
The students combined a several step process into one fluent activity.  They all chose the characters that they would play for the mock trial.  They then used the available transcripts of the trial to develop their character lines and created a simulated mock trial of the events.  <<read more>>

Country House Serves Up Fresh and Delicious Food
OLCHS is savoring the newest member of its family: Country House Kitchen Company.  Country House Restaurant, located at 5400 W. 127th St. in Alsip, is a family owned business.  Its management team is made up Dave Boundas, Paul Boundas, John Bakalis, and Dave Fussell.

Country House has two sides of the business.  One is a full service breakfast, lunch and dinner restaurant.  The other is its school food service business, Country House Kitchen Company.  Country House started its school business with the idea to bring a restaurant model into area schools.  They operate each kitchen individually as its own "restaurant" that focuses on customer service and from-scratch cooking so each kitchen can be customized to the preferences of each individual school.  Menus are not set to blanket all of their schools, rather they create and develop customized menus at each location that reflect the tastes and preferences of each site's population.  Each kitchen is fully staffed and all meals are prepared on-site.  Country House now services 15 schools and feeds kids from pre-school all the way through college.

The response they have received from students, faculty, and staff at Oak Lawn Community High School has been overwhelming.  On their first day they served 90 of their daily specials, which is the focal point of their menu.  It is a daily home cooked meal and the best indicator of how their program is doing.  This number has steadily grown and at this point in the school year they have served 350! The Spartan staff is fantastic and shares their vision and commitment to from-scratch cooking in school kitchens. Teacher and football coach Matt Arthur describes the food as "delectably delightful."  <<read more>>

International Walk to School Day
Approximately 1,000 students from Oak Lawn Community H.S. will be walking and rolling to school Wednesday along with parents, teachers, and community leaders.

Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

For additional local information, please contact Dean Hernandez at 708-741-5619.
