Oak Lawn Soccer Takes Windy City Title With Defense
|
The old adage says that defense wins championships. And that adage certainly came true for the Spartans on Wednesday night. For the first time in Oak Lawn Community High School history, the boys Soccer team won the Windy City Classic at Toyota Park in Bridgeview by topping defending champion Bremen 3-0 in the title contest.
Our defense gave up only one goal in the five games we played," head coach Nate Joiner said. "That goal came against Bloom Township in the semifinals. We then shut out Bremen in the final and Abel Cavada, the goalkeeper, made three tough saves to the preserve the win and the shutout."
In fact, the entire defense played well all tournament long. Sadiq Mohammad, Adam Baniewicz and Suleiman Ali played great defense throughout. The offense came up big as well as Giovanni Barragan had two goals and an assist in the final, while Mohamed Farraj had a goal and an assist. This great start to the season is only building confidence on the team.
"This championship ratifies the high hopes and goals of winning conference that the boys set for themselves as a goal this year," Joiner said. "It starts up right away. We play Bremen again on Tuesday for our first conference game. They will be looking to avenge the loss, I'm sure."

New School Year Brings New Traditions
|
New students, new teachers, new administrators and new traditions kicked off the Spartan 2016-17 school year. For one, Welcome Wagons took place throughout the summer to welcome the incoming class of 2020. Faculty, staff, and administrators visited the homes of incoming freshmen with a Spartan bag and a warm hello. New this year was a Freshmen Orientation on August 17, 2016, in which the freshmen had the school all to themselves to acclimate to the building, meet their teachers and walk through their schedule. The day ended with ice cream, raffles, T-shirts and performances by the dance team and cheerleaders on the football field. This "Opening Day" theme welcomed the entire school back on August 18, complete with music, balloons, and yes, a green carpet for students to strut back to school in style. The entire faculty and staff wore Opening Day t-shirts to add to the excitement of a new school year. << more>>

District Residency Policy Vigilantly Enforced
|
| |
However, an unfortunate consequence of our school's outstanding reputation is the temptation by some families to unlawfully enroll their children into OLCHS. It is a clear violation of state law to falsify documents and knowingly enroll a student into a public school when the family is not a legal resident of that school district. Recently, our Board of Education authorized the use of private investigative services to validate the residency of families enrolled at Oak Lawn Community High School.
Additionally, we are conducting thorough investigations with any family we believe may be attending OLCHS unlawfully, including home visitations.
Violators of the State of Illinois residency laws and District 229 Board Policy will be subject to the following:
* Mandatory tuition payments to District 229 ($15,424 per year) * Misdemeanor criminal charges filed with the Cook County State's Attorney Office * Forced student withdrawal from Oak Lawn Community High School.
Finally, we are requesting your assistance in enforcing our residency policies. If you have any information regarding possible violations, please share this information with the Superintendent's office via e-mail at mriordan@olchs.org, or via phone at 708-741-5601. The sources of this information will remain confidential. << more>>

Spartans Welcome New Counselor and Drama Coach
|
| |
The halls are buzzing at Oak Lawn Community High School as the school gears up for the fall musical. And there's more to talk about this year. After all, there is a new director this year: Jeffrey Pastiak. Pastiak earned his B.A. at the University of Illinois and his M.A. at Lewis University. He worked at Kankakee most recently but changed jobs because he wanted to be closer to home and be able to coach and direct. At Oak Lawn Community High School, he is excited to not only have a position as a guidance counselor, but as Director of the Fall Musical and Assistant Coach for the Speech/Forensics team
Pastiak chose Spamalot for the fall musical because he wanted to find a big comedy that would speak to the students, staff, and community. Spamalot is a fun show to both perform in and see. It also offers a lot of small roles, giving almost every member of the cast to have their moment in the spotlight. Pastiak said, "OLCHS is an incredibly wonderful school with an excellent reputation for academics and extracurriculars. I'm very excited that I get to be a part of the school and help make a difference in young adults' lives. Go Spartans!" << more>>

New Schedule Includes Advisory and Spartan Plus
|
| |
Oak Lawn Community High School took two years to research and create a schedule that would best fit the needs of its students. Included in this year's new schedule are two new components to the school day: Advisory and Spartan Plus. Advisory takes place every day after second period. It is a time for students to meet with their teacher for 16 minutes for a variety of purposes. One, students will engage in a Social Emotional Learning curriculum designed to help students balance the demands in their life. It is also a time for teachers to connect with students, check their grades and enjoy Stop, Drop and Read.
Spartan Plus replaces traditional study halls so that students can access their teachers four days a week after Advisory. Students sign up in Skyward to visit their teachers throughout the week to get extra help, make up tests, and work on projects. The format of this schedule gives students direct access to their teachers, in contrast to traditional study halls where students went to the same room every day with an assigned teacher. << more>>

Health Students Participating in Mental Health Screening
|
| |
National Suicide Prevention Week is September 5-12, 2016. On September 22, 2016, all students enrolled in Health class will participate in our mental health screening. This program has been conducted at OLCHS for almost 10 years. The purpose is to educate and provide early identification and intervention for students who may be experiencing signs of depression. This program is supported and funded by Elyssa's Mission, an organization named for a bright, beautiful, extremely outgoing girl who tragically died by suicide. Elyssa's Mission's Signs of Suicide program seeks to teach youth that depression is a treatable illness, empower them to respond to a potential suicide (themselves, a friend or a family member), and prevent teen suicide.
The SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program is the only school-based suicide prevention program to show a reduction (by 40 percent!) in self-reported suicide attempts in a randomized controlled study - BMC Public Health, July 2007
If you have any questions about this program, please contact social worker, Erin Lee at 708.741.5637. In addition, there is a brand new parent training to become educated on the signs of suicide and help save lives. Here is a link to visit and share with your community: http://elyssasmission.org/parent-suicide-prevention-training/

A Message from the Attendance Office
|
Attendance Reminders!
To ensure that students are successful please make school attendance a priority. It is important for students to attend school each day and to receive a good night's sleep. Parents and students should make every effort to avoid scheduling dental and medical appointments during the school day. If an appointment must be made during the school day, efforts should be made to vary the periods missed to attend such appointments.
Pre-Arranged Absence Form
When students need to leave during the school day for situations such as court appearances, funerals, and dental/medical appointments, a Pre-Arranged Absence Form (available online or in the Deans'/Attendance Office) must be completed and submitted prior to the appointment.
Attendance...Every Day Matters!
