OLCHS Mourns the Loss of Tim Sidlow, Arrangements Announced
|
| |
The arrangements for Mr. Sidlow are scheduled for Friday, May 13, 2016, at St. Margaret Mary Parish, 1450 Green Trails Drive, Naperville, Illinois. Visitation is from 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. at the church and a mass will follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorials to the Anna Lynn Sidlow Education Fund, 9400 Southwest Highway, Oak Lawn, Illinois, 60453, or online at https://www.gofundme.com/23v96anv.
Oak Lawn Community High School has modified the school calendar to allow students and staff members the opportunity to share their condolences with the Sidlow family and to attend the visitation/mass. OLCHS will modify the school's calendar for an early dismissal on Friday, May 13, 2016. Students will be released at 11:41 a.m. following Bell Schedule G. The PRIDE/Student Recognition Assembly that was scheduled for Friday, May 13, will be rescheduled for Monday, May 16, 2016, following Bell Schedule D.
In addition to our grief over this loss, the school is sensitive to the fact that Mr. Sidlow's passing will have an impact on our students, staff, and parents. Students are welcome to visit the Student Services Office for the opportunity to talk about their thoughts and feelings with a Student Services staff member.
Beginning on Monday, May 9, the Media Center will have notecards available for students and staff members to record a memory of Mr. Sidlow or to write condolence messages to Mrs. Sidlow.
_____________
On Thursday, May 5, 2016, OLCHS lost one of their own. English teacher Tim Sidlow passed away. He had been on a leave of absence due to kidney and liver disease. During his tenure, Mr. Sidlow served as an English teacher, reading specialist, and basketball coach. He was a dedicated Spartan and truly enjoyed teaching.
Mr. Sidlow was an avid sports fan and was recently honored by the varsity baseball team. The players, staff members, and spectators honored Tim by wearing special jerseys with the name SIDLOW on the back. Proceeds from the event were donated to Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago where Mr. Sidlow received a kidney transplant in 1984.
The entire Spartan family joins Mrs. Jennifer Sidlow, OLCHS Media Specialist, and their daughter Anna Lynn in celebrating the life of this dedicated colleague, coach, mentor, and friend.

Journalism Team Takes 9th in State
|
| |
The Journalism Team placed 9th with impressive individual performances at the Illinois High School Association State Tournament at Eastern Illinois University on Friday, April 29, 2016. The Spartans were led by Senior Fiona Agapito's State winning Advertisement, 2nd Place in State performance by Junior Salam Mulhem in Infographic, and the 6th Place in State finish by Junior Jade Ryerson in the Headline Writing Competition. The IHSA Journalism team is a combination of the Spartanite school newspaper and the Shield yearbook programs. The students from these two groups first compete in seventeen journalistic events at Sectionals and then the top three from each event make it to the IHSA State Finals at Eastern Illinois University. Head Coach Patrick DiFilippo said of the team, "we put up some solid performances at the Loyola University Sectional but we had several fourth and fifth place results so our team was relatively small going to state." Once at state, this small three-student team scored in all the events possible. The team scored 12 points which left it only six points behind 2nd Place in State Stevenson High School in a bunched up top ten. Coach Jamie Atkus said of the performance, "they went into the state competition really tested and we knew that they had a great chance to do really well. We are so proud of their hard work this year." Coach Jessica Nickless also shared in the praise for this group. The Journalism team will be losing some key members such as State Champion Fiona Agapito and former state qualifier Jalisa Balboa but they will have many returning members that plan on besting this year's performance. <<read more>>

Final Exams will be administered on:
Monday, May 23
Tuesday, May 24
Wednesday, May 25
Please note: Wednesday, May 25, 2016, is not a typical Wednesday late-start day.
Final exams begin each day at 7:55 a.m. The final exam grade is 20% of the semester grade in most courses. Students are not required to attend Full-Period Study Halls, Lunch/Study Halls, or Access Period Study Halls. This includes Assigned Resource Rooms, PSAE Prep Classes, Supported Study Halls, Guided Study Halls, LRP Access, ELL/ESL Access, and as student aides. Volleyball's Lindner Improves to Become Big-Play Guy
|
Each week the Athletic Department and the Spartan Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) selects a Spartan Athlete of the Week. The recipient for the week of April 18 is volleyball player Jack Lindner.
Lindner carried the Spartans over the weekend with 41 kills, 35 digs, 7 aces and a hitting percentage of .294. "Jack is not hitting outside and is making big strides with the offense," said coach Matt Hunt. "He has become the big-play option for the offense as the Spartans look to make noise in conference play."
Other athletes nominated for Spartan Athlete of the Week were Tasneem Jaber (girls track) and Mia Loya (softball).

Senior Textbooks/iPad/Debt Collection Process
|
Seniors should follow the textbook and iPad collection schedule and return textbooks/iPads to the Media Center by 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2016, to avoid being placed on the debt list. Seniors are required to return the iPad and the case. The iPad should be charged and updated to the latest iOS. Furthermore, the last opportunity before graduation for seniors to pay their outstanding debt will be Monday, May 16, and Tuesday, May 17, until 3:30 p.m. in the Business office. Only cash, money order, or credit card payments are accepted, no personal checks. Failure to pay debts by 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, will place a hold on your diploma and transcripts. Debts cannot be cleared at graduation practice or at the graduation ceremony. After Tuesday, May 17, seniors will have to wait until Thursday, May 19, for the next opportunity to clear debts. Residency Validation for 2016-2017 |
OLCHS is collecting
residency documentation for the 2016-17 school year. In past years, the documents were collected in the summer as part of the back-to-school registration process. The intent of the change is to speed up the summer registration process and to reduce the need for parents to visit campus during the August iPad/textbook pick-up days. Families are expected to have their residency documentation submitted by June 30, 2016.
In February, each family was emailed information on the 2016-17 Residency Validation process. Within the email there was a hyperlink to InfoSnap to allow families to upload their residency documentation. Although an email was sent for each student enrolled, a family only needs to complete the InfoSnap process once. Please use InfoSnap to complete your Residency Validation process. If you did not receive the email or have other residence questions, please contact Maria Vanderwarren at 708/741-5602 or mvanderwarren@olchs.org. Although families are encouraged to submit their documentation electronically via InfoSnap, families do have the option of submitting the required residency documentation via email, fax, U.S. Mail, or by dropping off copies of the required paperwork at the school. Families that prefer to submit the documentation by hardcopy must print the Residency Validation Form and submit copies of all the required paperwork. The school will not make copies. Additionally, staff members are not available during the school day without an appointment. Residency questions and requests for appointments should be directed to Maria Vanderwarren at 708/741-5602 or mvanderwarren@olchs.org. Families needing assistance can visit campus on Thursday, May 12, 2016, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. << read more>>
