Journalism Team Headed to State
The Journalism Team is set to take on the best and brightest journalistic minds from around the state at Eastern Illinois University on Friday, April 29, 2016. The state qualifying trio of Salam Mulhem, Fiona Agapito, and Jade Ryerson will be representing the Spartans.

The trio earned this trip downstate with outstanding performances at the Loyola University IHSA Sectional Tournament on Saturday April 23. Junior Salam Mulhem earned a sectional title in Infographics for an awesome design of a student part-time job graphic. Salam's sectional title came in her first year in the competition. Senior Fiona Agapito dazzled the judges with her artistic abilities, thus securing a third place finish in Advertising. Last year, Fiona performed really strong at State and earned a 4th in state in the Advertising competition. Junior Jade Ryerson is making her first trip to State with a 3rd place finish in Headline Writing. This trio leads a solid core of journalist students that placed in the top six in nine categories. Best wishes to these Spartans!
Athletes Sign to Continue Athletic Career in College
Hard work and dedication in the classroom and on the field can produce solid results in the high school setting, but for 10 Oak Lawn Community High School seniors, playing sports is going to continue into their college years. Last week, several Spartans gathered for an unofficial college-signing day to honor their hard work and achievement. Athletic Director Kevin McKeown, administration, coaches, and parents came together for a group celebration.

In Volleyball, Samantha Lesiak, Samantha Foley, and Jessica Gavras all signed to attend and play at Moraine Valley. In Baseball, Liam Blake and John Roberts are headed to Trinity Christian College. Mia Loya and Marisa Loya, who are both softball players are going to Aquinas College, while fellow softball standout Danielle Allen is going to play at the University of Chicago. In Boys Cross Country, Steve Raybould is going to Illinois Wesleyan. In Boys Bowling Dylan Catalano-Wild is attending Mount Mercy University in Iowa. Oak Lawn wishes all of these fine student athletes the best of luck at the next level.  <<read more>>

Teen Tech Week Field Trip to Barnes & Noble Makerspace
As part of Teen Tech Week, twenty-four students visited the Barnes & Noble in Oak Brook to tour the Makerspace.  Students rotated through stations while "playing" with cool gadgets, such as Dot and Dash, Little Bits, Ozobots and Sphero.  They completed light coding and browsed the vast array of books and other materials available to those interested in S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).  Students even made a wacky robot named Meccano dance and hold hands with them by using only voice commands!

Students interested in STEM & the Maker Movement are encouraged to visit the Media Center iTunes U course for projects and upcoming events.  <<read more>>
Roberts Shows Championship Heart With Big Performance
Each week the Athletic Department and the Spartan Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) selects a Spartan Athlete of the Week. The recipient for the week of April 4 is senior baseball player John Roberts.

Roberts went 3-for-3 and led the offense to help the Spartans earn a 3-1 victory over Eisenhower. He then went 3-for-4 in the win over Bolingbrook in the conference challenge, and he picked up the win on the mound by pitching two innings in relief.  <<read more>>

Rafacz Comes Through in Clutch Moments for Softball
Each week the Athletic Department and the Spartan Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) selects a Spartan Athlete of the Week. The recipient for the week of April 11 is junior second baseman for the softball team Natalia Rafacz.

Rafacz went 7-for-15 (.467) during the week with six RBIs and two runs scored. She had the game-winning RBI in a 3-2 win over Tinley Park in the 11th inning and then had the game-tying RBI the very next day in a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Oak Forest.

"Natalia really expects a lot out of herself, and it was great to see her smile when she came up with the huge hits this week," said head coach Brian Frangella. "And to add to that, she is one of our best players on defense." Other athletes nominated for the award were Blessing Egbulefu (Girls Track) and Shawnee Masters (Badminton).  <<read more>>
Athletic Open Campus
The Athletic Department will once again be hosting their annual Athletic Open Campus on Saturday, May 7th, from 1-4 p.m.  The event will begin in the main Spartan gym located on the south end of campus.  This event is a great opportunity for future Spartans to meet our coaches, see our facilities, and participate in our practice drills.  Parents can accompany the athletic director on a tour of the campus to see all the great resources we have for our students.  There is no signup and the event is FREE!  The event is open to all community youth ages 7-14.  Help us get the word out to all family and friends.  We look forward to seeing you on May 7th.  Any questions please contact Athletic Director Kevin McKeown at 708-741-5623 and/or kmckeown@olchs.org, Go Spartans!

Underage Drinking Immunity
I do not, will not, and cannot approve of underage drinking of alcohol. However, I am not naive. As prom, graduation and summer vacation approach, I know many minors will find themselves in a situation where alcohol will be readily available. Many of you will make the right decision, and not imbibe. Others, however, will tempt fate and take that drink. Often times, underage drinkers do not know when enough is enough.

If you find yourself in a situation where you and your friends have gotten drunk, and someone has passed out, they need your help. Call 911. Yes, the police will come with the paramedics. But thanks to Illinois House Bill 2341, you will not face criminal prosecution due to the Alcohol Poisoning Immunity Bill.

Illinois law 235 ILCS 5/6-20(i), signed into effect in 2015, states that a law enforcement officer may not charge a person with an offense involving underage alcohol possession or consumption, when that person has requested medical assistance for an individual who reasonably appeared to be in need of medical assistance due to alcohol consumption. What does that mean? If you call 911 because your friend passed out from drinking too much, and you stay with your friend to help, and you cooperate with paramedics and police, you cannot be arrested or charged with underage possession or consumption of alcohol.

Do the right thing, and get help for your overly intoxicated friend. Edgar Snyder & Associates, a Pennsylvania law firm, estimates that over 4,300 minors die every year from alcohol intoxication. This new, common sense law, hopefully will help reduce that number. Enjoy prom. Be proud of your graduation. Relax this summer. Do it all sober and live to talk about it.

Senior Textbooks/iPad/Debt Collection Process
Seniors should follow the textbook and iPad collection schedule and return textbooks/iPads to the Media Center by 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2016, to avoid being placed on the debt list. Seniors are required to return the iPad and the case. The iPad should be charged and updated to the latest iOS.

Furthermore, the last opportunity before graduation for seniors to pay their outstanding debt will be Monday, May 16, and Tuesday, May 17, until 3:30 p.m. in the Business office.   Only cash, money order, or credit card payments are accepted, no personal checks.

Failure to pay debts by 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, will place a hold on your diploma and transcripts.  Debts cannot be cleared at graduation practice or at the graduation ceremony.  After Tuesday, May 17, seniors will have to wait until Thursday, May 19, for the next opportunity to clear debts. Residency Validation for 2016-2017
OLCHS is collecting
residency documentation for the 2016-17 school year. In past years, the documents were collected in the summer as part of the back-to-school registration process. The intent of the change is to speed up the summer registration process and to reduce the need for parents to visit campus during the August iPad/textbook pick-up days.  Families are expected to have their residency documentation submitted by June 30, 2016.

On Tuesday, February 16, 2016, each family was emailed information on the 2016-17 Residency Validation process. Within the email there was a hyperlink to InfoSnap to allow families to upload their residency documentation. Although an email was sent for each student enrolled, a family only needs to complete the InfoSnap process once. Please use InfoSnap to complete your Residency Validation process. If you did not receive the email or have other residence questions, please contact Maria Vanderwarren at 708/741-5602 or mvanderwarren@olchs.org.

Although families are encouraged to submit their documentation electronically via InfoSnap, families do have the option of submitting the required residency documentation via email, fax, U.S. Mail, or by dropping off copies of the required paperwork at the school. Families that prefer to submit the documentation by hardcopy must print the Residency Validation Form and submit copies of all the required paperwork. The school will not make copies. Additionally, staff members are not available during the school day without an appointment. Residency questions and requests for appointments should be directed to Maria Vanderwarren at 708/741-5602 or mvanderwarren@olchs.org.
Families needing assistance can visit campus on Thursday, May 12, 2016, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. <<read more>>
