PARCC Testing - April 21 and April 28
OLCHS is administrating the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) assessments this year on April 21 and April 28, 2016. The assessments are administered to most freshmen. Those students taking the assessments have been notified by mail. The assessments will be administered via a computer-based format. Students will use their school-issued iPads to take the assessments. The dates and times for the testing are:

English-Language Arts:
Thursday, April 21, 2016, 7:45 am-1:45 pm

Math:
Thursday, April 28, 2016, 7:45 am-1:05 pm

Each subject-matter assessment consists of three sessions taken in one day. Students will be taken out of their classes these days and assigned to a testing room on the 3rd floor. A small snack will be provided to students during the day, and they will be released from school when testing is complete. Testing students may leave, but are welcome to stay in the student cafeteria after testing until 3:00 pm, if needed.

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors will attend and depart school following the regular bell schedule.

Additional information about the PARCC assessments, including test format, sample test items, and notes about scoring is available online at www.parcconline.org. To read the Illinois State Board of Education Superintendent's message about the PARCC assessment click here.

Questions about the PARCC assessment can be directed to Assistant Principal Dr. Lietz at 708/741-5616 or jlietz@olchs.org.

Spartans to Stand Up for Cancer
Student Marty Feigl has called upon the Spartan family to continue its energetic fight against cancer. The event, titled Spartans Stand-Up to Cancer, is a walk fashioned after Relay for Life in which walkers create teams and walk for 30 minute intervals.  Each team will be made up of one Spartan student, one athlete/team, one administrator, one staff member, one alumni, one community member, and one survivor. All proceeds will go to a non-for-profit organization in Oak Lawn that provides support and services to families in the Oak Lawn community.

The event will take place on Saturday, April 30 from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on the Oak Lawn Community High School track.  A minimum donation of $25.00 is requested.  <<read more>>

Spartan Athletes Volunteer to Help Local Residents
Athletic director Kevin McKeown recently partnered with Jacques Lopez at the Village recycling center to provide a community service opportunity for student athletes. Athletes Jacob Gonzalez, Pablo Martinez, Donald Ott, Jason Hrabe, Jeremy Jeeninga, and Eryk Marusarz, along with baseball head coach Bill Gerny and members of the baseball program, braved the cold temperatures and visited senior and disabled Oak Lawn residents' homes to remove e-waste and bring it to the Village recycling facility on 99th and Central Ave.

Most of the e-waste picked up were old, heavy big screen tube TVs, some of which had to be brought down multiple flights of stairs in apartment and condominium buildings.  The athletes were commended for their hard work and positive interactions with all of the residents. The residents were very appreciative of the Spartan athletes who took time during their weekend to lend a helping hand.  <<read more>>

Prevent Teen Deaths and Injuries Due to Underage Drinking
Each year in the United States, over 4,000 teens die and nearly 200,000 are injured due to underage drinking. With social triggers such as summer break, graduation, and proms soon approaching - the peak season for when teens drink alcohol for the first time - now is the time to ensure our students are not added to these grim statistics.

To help keep our kids safe, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission is partnering with high schools and sharing resources with parents. An e-book on how to talk to your kids is available online at: Click here

Did you know that the vast majority of teens and pre-teens will try alcohol for the first time in the coming months? Contrary to public opinion, research consistently shows that kids DO listen to their parents. Remember, you are your child's first hero! To learn more, please click here.
Spring Pep Assembly
An all-school assembly to honor our Spring athletic and activity programs is scheduled for Monday, April 19, 2016, at 2:00 p.m.  Students are encouraged to embody Spartan Pride by wearing their class colors. Freshmen wear Gray, Sophomores wear Black, Juniors wear White, and Seniors wear Green. Go Spartans!

 Senior Textbook Return
Clear Debt
Seniors should follow the textbook collection schedule and return textbooks to the Media Center by 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2016, to avoid being placed on the debt list.

Furthermore, the last opportunity before graduation for seniors to pay their outstanding debt will be Monday, May 16, and Tuesday, May 17, until 3:30 p.m. in the Business office.   Only cash, money order, or credit card payments are accepted, no personal checks.

Failure to pay debts by 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, will place a hold on your diploma and transcripts.  Debts cannot be cleared at graduation practice or at the graduation ceremony.  After Tuesday, May 17, seniors will have to wait until Thursday, May 19, for the next opportunity to clear debts.
Residency Validation for 2016-2017
OLCHS is collecting
residency documentation for the 2016-17 school year. In past years, the documents were collected in the summer as part of the back-to-school registration process. The intent of the change is to speed up the summer registration process and to reduce the need for parents to visit campus during the August iPad/textbook pick-up days.  Families are expected to have their residency documentation submitted by June 30, 2016.

On Tuesday, February 16, 2016, each family was emailed information on the 2016-17 Residency Validation process. Within the email there was a hyperlink to InfoSnap to allow families to upload their residency documentation. Although an email was sent for each student enrolled, a family only needs to complete the InfoSnap process once. Please use InfoSnap to complete your Residency Validation process. If you did not receive the email or have other residence questions, please contact Maria Vanderwarren at 708/741-5602 or mvanderwarren@olchs.org.

Although families are encouraged to submit their documentation electronically via InfoSnap, families do have the option of submitting the required residency documentation via email, fax, U.S. Mail, or by dropping off copies of the required paperwork at the school. Families that prefer to submit the documentation by hardcopy must print the Residency Validation Form and submit copies of all the required paperwork. The school will not make copies. Additionally, staff members are not available during the school day without an appointment. Residency questions and requests for appointments should be directed to Maria Vanderwarren at 708/741-5602 or mvanderwarren@olchs.org.
Families needing assistance can visit campus on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. <<read more>>
