Board of Education Spotlight:  Matthew Egan
Oak Lawn Community High School will periodically spotlight a Board of Education member in an effort to provide information about the school and its board members.  Matthew Egan, current Board of Education President, is a life-long Oak Lawn resident.  His parents moved to Oak Lawn in 1951. Matt is one of 11 children, and he is one of four siblings still residing in District 229.

Matt earned his BA in English from Loyola University of Chicago and his Masters in Education from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign. He currently works with adult learners in various settings from process and safety training to leadership and communication.

Matt has worked in manufacturing his entire adult life, as he likes working at a place where something tangible is produced.  He has worked at General Foods, Zenith Electronics, Ford Motor Company and is currently employed at Ingredion (formerly Corn Products) in Bedford Park. While at Ford, he was part of a team that was awarded the Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing, an internationally recognized award for the application of lean principles.

Matt considers his greatest accomplishment to be marrying his wife Lisa. She is an alumna of Oak Lawn Community High School. Matt and Lisa have two children, Rebecca and Christina, both Spartan graduates.

Matt was a member of the St. Gerald School Board and Athletic Club as well as a member of the Holy Name Society.

As a board member at Oak Lawn Community High School, Matt  has enjoyed meeting the many talented and gifted students that are part of the school's diverse sports and activities programs. Matt is impressed with the endless opportunities that the students are part of, and he is proud that quite a few of the programs started out as an idea from a few students that teamed up with a committed sponsor.

Ultimately, Matt wants OLCHS to be a school of choice, where people move to Oak Lawn so their children can attend our school. Over the last few years, Oak Lawn Community High School has made significant improvements, such as the 1:1 iPad initiative, the football and baseball fields, the main entrance and parking lot, and the culinary arts lab. Many improvements to the infrastructure of the school have also been made, though less visible, but still critical to its path forward, such as secure doors, security cameras, improved lighting, and roof maintenance.

Matt has always believed you can't stand on the sidelines and complain about the game! Matt encourages OLCHS seniors who are approaching their 18th birthday to start paying attention to the upcoming elections and he reminds the students that they are the future of our country. <<read more>>

Hee Haw!  It's Time for Donkey Basketball
The Rotary Club is a charitable service organization that gives time, talent and treasure to many different organizations and causes.  At the international level, Rotary supports projects to eradicate polio and to provide clean water to impoverished areas.

Locally, Rotary provides scholarships to Oak Lawn students, dictionaries to its 3rd graders, and supports Park Lawn Association, the Children's Museum, and many other groups.  The club has also provided support to Cross Countries students over the years.

On Friday, March 11, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., the Rotary Club is partnering with Oak Lawn Community High School and Richards High School to host a charitable fundraising event at Oak Lawn Community High School.  The proceeds from the event will be donated to three local organizations: Pilgrim Faith Food Pantry, Genesis Therapy Center, and Veteran's Outpatient Clinic.

Students, staff, and community members will be playing a few games of basketball while riding donkeys. All are invited to attend.  Tickets purchased pre-event are only $6.00 and can be purchased in the Athletic Office or from any Spartan Athletic Leadership Team (SALT) member.  Admission at the door is $8.00 for students and $10.00 for adults.  Children six years and younger are free.

Johnson Continues to Thrive From Behind Three-Point Line
Each week the Athletic Department and the Spartan Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) selects a Spartan Athlete of the Week. The recipient for the week of February 22 is senior basketball player Rashad Johnson. He scored 21 points in a 74-68 loss to Richards to end the regular season. His performance proved to be historic as he moved within one three-point field goal of the tying Rob Bridgeman's single-season record. He also remained on pace to set the single-season free-throw percentage mark as he was 91 of 106 (86%).

The other athlete nominated for Spartan Athlete of the Week honors was Boys Track and Field competitor Michael Majcherek.  <<read more>>

 Comprehensive School Client Survey
OLCHS has partnered with the National School Climate Center (NSCC) to conduct a comprehensive school climate survey. The Comprehensive School Climate Inventory (CSCI) seeks input from our constituents. Different versions of the survey will be given to students, parents, and staff members.

The online survey window for parents is open and will remain open through Monday, March 14, 2016. A link on our website will allow parents to begin the survey. Parents needing access to a computer can complete the survey during the school day by scheduling an appointment with Guidance Secretary Jeanne Horacek at 708/741-5632.

The CSCI is designed to assess perceptions of the school environment, including safety, relationships, support for learning, and the environment within the school. The survey should take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. Your feedback is important to assist OLCHS understand and improve specific climate issues. All responses are anonymous. There are no names or identifying information attached to the survey, and all data will be reported in terms of the way groups of people have responded. <<read more>>

Residency Validation for 2016-2017
OLCHS wi
ll collect residency documentation beginning in February for the 2016-17 school year. In past years, the documents were collected in the summer as part of the back-to-school registration process. The intent of the change is to speed up the summer registration process and to reduce the need for parents to visit campus during the August iPad/textbook pick-up days.  Families are expected to have their residency documentation submitted by June 30, 2016.

On Tuesday, February 16, 2016, each family was emailed information on the 2016-17 Residency Validation process. Within the email there was a hyperlink to InfoSnap to allow families to upload their residency documentation. Although an email was sent for each student enrolled, a family only needs to complete the InfoSnap process once. Please use InfoSnap to complete your Residency Validation process. If you did not receive the email or have other residence questions, please contact Maria Vanderwarren at 708/741-5602 or mvanderwarren@olchs.org.

Although families are encouraged to submit their documentation electronically via InfoSnap, families do have the option of submitting the required residency documentation via email, fax, U.S. Mail, or by dropping off copies of the required paperwork at the school. Families that prefer to submit the documentation by hardcopy must print the Residency Validation Form and submit copies of all the required paperwork. The school will not make copies. Additionally, staff members are not available during the school day without an appointment. Residency questions and requests for appointments should be directed to Maria Vanderwarren at 708/741-5602 or mvanderwarren@olchs.org.
Families needing assistance can visit campus on: 1) Monday, March 14, 2016, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.; or 2) Wednesday, April 13, 2016, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. <<read more>>
