OLCHS Conducting A School Climate Survey

Oak Lawn Community High School has partnered with the National School Climate Center (NSCC) to conduct a comprehensive school climate survey. The Comprehensive School Climate Inventory (CSCI) seeks input from our constituents. Different versions of the survey will be given to students, parents, and staff members.

Students and staff members will complete the survey during the Stop, Drop, & Read session on Tuesday, February 23, 2016. The online survey window for parents will open on Monday, February 22 and will remain open through Monday, March 7, 2016.

Parents needing access to a computer can complete the survey during Parent-Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, or during the school day by scheduling an appointment with Guidance Secretary Jeanne Horacek at 708/741-5632.

The CSCI is designed to assess perceptions of the school environment, including safety, relationships, support for learning, and the environment within the school. The survey should take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. Your feedback is important to assist OLCHS understand and improve specific climate issues. All responses are anonymous. There are no names or identifying information attached to the survey, and all data will be reported in terms of the way groups of people have responded.

The CSCI is one of the nation's most scientifically sound and helpful surveys that provide immediate feedback on how students, parents, and school personnel perceive their school's particular climate for learning. Vetted by the National School Climate Council, three independent reviews of school climate measures, a core group of practice and policy leaders, the CSCI is considered to be one of the top school climate surveys in the field. This social, emotional, and civic as well as intellectual information provides a foundation for the five-stage school climate improvement process. The five-stage process is based on a cyclical and continuous process of preparation, evaluation, understanding the evaluation findings and action planning, implementing the action plan, and re-evaluation and continuing the cycle of improvement efforts. The survey results will provide OLCHS administration with a platform on which to build an action plan for our school improvement efforts.

NSCC will compile all of the results and conduct a thorough data analysis. When the process is completed, NSCC will provide the school district with a detailed report of our results. The findings will be analyzed by the school's administrative team and will be used to help shape our school improvement initiatives. Data from these reports will be sent to the Illinois State Board of Education and will be included in the school's state report card that is publicly released annually in October.

As required by state law, OLCHS must conduct learning condition surveys on a biennial basis. The CSCI meets this requirement and will be administered in place of the Illinois 5Essentials Survey that was given in 2013 and 2014. The administration believes the CSCI tool will yield more reliable and useful information for our school improvement efforts.

Questions regarding the survey should be directed to Assistant Principal Joseph McCurdy at 708/741-5613, or [email protected]. If a parent prefers not to have their student participate in the survey, they should contact Assistant Principal Joseph McCurdy at 708/741-5613, or [email protected].

All students, parents, and staff members are encouraged to complete the survey. Your feedback is important to the school and will help maintain and promote a safe, caring, and supportive environment.
