Emergency Preparedness -Be Sure to Get Text Messages
OLCHS wants parents to receive school communication in a timely manner, especially in an emergency situation. Parents are strongly encouraged to sign-up to receive text messages. Parents can easily sign-up through the Skylert feature with Skyward Family Access.  Follow these easy steps: 1) Log on to Skyward Family Access; 2) Click on the Skylert Button on the left; 3) Scroll to the bottom of the screen and enter your cell phone number(s) in the "Text Message" Section; and 4) Click Save.

Parents are encouraged to review all of their settings within the Skylert screen and to add additional phone numbers and email addresses as desired. Parents determine what numbers and email addresses receive messages and the type of messages. Parents needing assistance can contact Jill Malkowski at 708/741-5611.

Media Center Aides Present at Maker Faire
Media Center aides Anthony Lopez and Wojciech Zacherek, both sophomores, presented at District 123 Hometown School's Maker Faire Program.  Numerous local organizations and clubs showcased new tech tools and projects to over 150 interested parents and students at the evening event on January 20.

Lopez and Zacherek highlighted Sphero, one of the Media Center's three small programmable robots, and MaKey MaKey, simple invention kits.  Both fielded questions and promoted upcoming STEM Club events at OLCHS.

The "Maker Movement" is quite popular in libraries and schools across the country.  The concept builds upon the idea that students create, collaborate, and construct to make a wide variety of products and projects.  OLCHS Media Center's Makerspace includes a 3D printer, Apple TV, sewing machine, as well as loads of art supplies and a seemingly endless supply of duct tape for crafts.  STEM, an acronym for Science Technology Engineering Math, focuses on increasing skills and knowledge in these areas.  Careers in these fields are deeply intertwined in the real world and in how students learn most effectively.

Softball Program Plans to Crown Ultimate Spartan  -Saturday, January 23
Ultimate-Spartan
Excellent high school athletes always seem to get attention, and outstanding academic students get their share of the spotlight as well. However, it is rare that students excelling in both get to show the community who they really are. The Oak Lawn Community High School softball team is planning on letting these seniors show what they've got in a competition to crown the top senior boy in the school with the fourth running of the Ultimate Spartan.

This year seniors Liam Blake, Vinnie Caprio, Alexander Kenny, Miles O'Brien, Lucas Palacios, Jorge Ramirez, and David Ward will battle it out for the title as they compete in Formal Wear, Beach Wear, Talent, Interviews and Audience Appreciation. The competition is Saturday, January 23, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. in the Spartan Gymnasium at OLCHS. Tickets are available at the school for $5 in advance. They cost $7 at the door.

These guys embody what high school students are as they participate in sports and activities while maintaining top grades. The event will have three local judges with OLCHS teachers Lauren Klenn and Kate Mellone along with Secretary Jill Malkowski. Past winners of the Ultimate Spartan include Bobby Kametas, Kyle Kuzur, and Peter Ruane.  <<read more>>

O'Brien Grapples Tough Competition for Second Place at Geneva
OLCHS is continuing to put athletics in a brighter light on campus. As a result, Athletic Director Kevin McKeown and the Student Athlete Leadership Team have combined to select a Spartan Athlete of the Week. The recipient for the week of January 4 is Miles O'Brien.

In order be the best, one needs to beat the best. And for senior wrestler and team captain Miles O'Brien, that moment came in early January at the Geneva Tournament. O'Brien battled hard and finished the tournament with an 8-2 record and a second-place finish. His only two losses came at the hands of top-ranked opponents.

"Miles is our team captain and he is 23-5 so far this season," said head coach Steve Long. "The tournament was very tough." O'Brien continues to contribute to the school in more ways than just wrestling though as he is a member of the Spartan Athletic Leadership Team, Cross Countries, and will compete in this Saturday's Ultimate Spartan competition.

Other nominations for Spartan Athlete of the Week include Samantha Yaber (Cheer), Jon McLawhorn (Bowling), and Sierra Reyes (Dance).  <<read more>>

Message from Athletic Director Kevin McKeown
The athletic department would like to once again passionately encourage our athletic program parents to get actively involved in our Booster Club.  We meet on the last Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. for about an hour to discuss upcoming events, organizing parent volunteers for the concession stand, and deciding together how to best give back our revenue to our athletic programs.  Right now we have two Vice President executive positions vacant as well as several department chairperson positions including concession stand and fundraising.  The overall strength of our athletic department is dependent mostly on the commitment of our athletes, coaches, and parents.  We strongly encourage all program parents to please attend our meetings and get involved as much as your schedule allows you too.  Thank you for your time and consideration and we hope to see you at our next meeting on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at 6:00 p.m.  We will be discussing what direction to take our scholarship essay that we give out at every Spring Awards ceremony. Thank you again, and Go Spartans!  <<read more>>

Bowling Benefit Raises Money for Scholarship Fund -February 6
Family and friends will gather to honor the late Megan Hurckes with a birthday bowling benefit at Arena Lanes on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at 7:00 p.m.  The friends and family of Megan Hurckes are honoring her birthday by participating in one of her favorite past times - bowling.

Megan is the late daughter of former Oak Lawn trustee Jerry Hurckes. Since Megan's death at age ten in 2009, the Hurckes have celebrated Megan's birthday by raising money for a good cause. The Hurckes Family is taking over Arena Lanes to raise money for the Megan Hurckes Scholarship Fund. Rather than mourn her death, the family started the fund as a way to celebrate Megan's life and keep her name and memory alive. "When Megan passed away we asked people not to give flowers but donate to a memorial fund," Jerry Hurckes said.

The family has raised over $40,000, which has gone to high school students continuing on to college, grammar school students going to high school, the Children's Museum and Westside Baseball. Megan Hurckes would have been 17 this year. She died after an ATV accident in 2009. Megan was a straight-A, fifth-grade student at Kolb Elementary School, a member of a champion girls' softball team for Westside Baseball, and an actress in the Oak Lawn Park District theater program.

The bowling benefit/birthday party kicks off at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Arena Lanes Bowling Center, at 4700 W. 103rd St. (103rd Street and Cicero Avenue). Those who are unable to attend but wish to make a donation can send checks payable to the Megan Hurckes Scholarship Foundation, c/o 7036 W. 96th St., Oak Lawn, IL, 60453. For more information about Megan's candlelight bowling birthday party and benefit, call 708-599-7302.
