Nugent Selected to Fill Board Vacancy
|
Margaret Nugent was selected from several candidates to fill the Board of Education vacancy that was created when Ann Touhy submitted her resignation in November. Nugent is a proud parent of three boys, two of which graduated from OLCHS in 2015. Nugent said, "I know first-hand the impact of a quality education, exactly the type my boys received at OLCHS. I welcome the opportunity to contribute to maintaining the high standards of education for all the children in District 229. In addition to academics, strong athletic and extracurricular activities are vital to positively shaping our students. My sons have benefited from these various sports and clubs, and I would like to see the continued success of these programs." Board of Education President Matt Egan said, "Margaret was selected from a group of several interested and qualified community members. Although the selection was made challenging because of the number of qualified individuals, her teaching experience provides the Board with another perspective. She has also been active in the community and within the school as an Athletic Booster Club member and past officer. The entire Board is pleased with her appointment and looks forward to working with her." Nugent will serve in the role until the term expires in April 2017. The position will then be determined by the April 4, 2017, election. <<read more>>

Softball Program Plans to Crown Ultimate Spartan -Saturday, January 23
|
Excellent high school athletes always seem to get attention, and outstanding academic students get their share of the spotlight as well. However, it is rare that students excelling in both get to show the community who they really are. The Oak Lawn Community High School softball team is planning on letting these seniors show what they've got in a competition to crown the top senior boy in the school with the fourth running of the Ultimate Spartan.
This year seniors Liam Blake, Vinnie Caprio, Alexander Kenny, Miles O'Brien, Lucas Palacios, Jorge Ramirez, and David Ward will battle it out for the title as they compete in Formal Wear, Beach Wear, Talent, Interviews and Audience Appreciation. The competition is Saturday, January 23, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. in the Spartan Gymnasium at OLCHS. Tickets are available at the school for $5 in advance. They cost $7 at the door.
These guys embody what high school students are as they participate in sports and activities while maintaining top grades. The event will have three local judges with OLCHS teachers Lauren Klenn and Kate Mellone along with Secretary Jill Malkowski. Past winners of the Ultimate Spartan include Bobby Kametas, Kyle Kuzur, and Peter Ruane. <<read more>>

A Message from the Athletic Director Kevin McKeown
|
As we near registration for the 2016-17 school year I wanted to take an opportunity through our newsletter to encourage all parents of Spartan athletes to talk with your child about enrolling in Athletic PE. This course is specifically tailored to athletes to help improve their technical and tactical skill development. This course focuses on strength, agility, flexibility, and endurance training to better prepare for their in-season competition. This is a semester course that athletes can take more than once. Research shows that in order for an individual to become an expert at a given athletic skill, they must repeat that skill in training near 1 million times! We use this course to reinforce the same training they receive from their athletic program to help them quickly master the skills they need to be successful on the field/court. Please feel free to call or email my office with any questions pertaining to this course. This course is available only to athletes sophomore through senior year. <<read more>>

Bowling Benefit Raises Money for Scholarship Fund -February 6
|
Family and friends will gather to honor the late Megan Hurckes with a birthday bowling benefit at Arena Lanes on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. The friends and family of Megan Hurckes are honoring her birthday by participating in one of her favorite past times - bowling.
Megan is the late daughter of former Oak Lawn trustee Jerry Hurckes. Since Megan's death at age ten in 2009, the Hurckes have celebrated Megan's birthday by raising money for a good cause. The Hurckes Family is taking over Arena Lanes to raise money for the Megan Hurckes Scholarship Fund. Rather than mourn her death, the family started the fund as a way to celebrate Megan's life and keep her name and memory alive. "When Megan passed away we asked people not to give flowers but donate to a memorial fund," Jerry Hurckes said.
The family has raised over $40,000, which has gone to high school students continuing on to college, grammar school students going to high school, the Children's Museum and Westside Baseball. Megan Hurckes would have been 17 this year. She died after an ATV accident in 2009. Megan was a straight-A, fifth-grade student at Kolb Elementary School, a member of a champion girls' softball team for Westside Baseball, and an actress in the Oak Lawn Park District theater program.
The bowling benefit/birthday party kicks off at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Arena Lanes Bowling Center, at 4700 W. 103rd St. (103rd Street and Cicero Avenue). Those who are unable to attend but wish to make a donation can send checks payable to the Megan Hurckes Scholarship Foundation, c/o 7036 W. 96th St., Oak Lawn, IL, 60453. For more information about Megan's candlelight bowling birthday party and benefit, call 708-599-7302.
