Johnson Provides Instant Offense to Become First Two-Time Athlete of the Week
|
Each week the OLCHS Athletic Department and the Spartan Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) selects a Spartan Athlete of the Week. The recipient for the week of December 28 is boys' basketball player Rashad Johnson.
He was named to the 10-player all-tournament team at the nine-team Effingham/Teutopolis Christmas Classic. Johnson averaged 17.5 points per game. The highlight came with a 29-point performance in a win against Charleston. He scored an amazing 26 of his 29 points in the second half. The Spartans went 2-2 in the tourney. This honor for Johnson adds onto his Athlete of the Week recognition from the week of November 30. In that week Johnson played exceptionally well against TF South where he scored 22 points, had four steals and amassed eight deflections. For the week of December 21, girls' bowler Stephanie Gasca earned Athlete of the Week honors. She was averaging a 176 and has been picking up 60% of her spares. In the Bremen tournament, she medaled and had a high game of 223. She helped the Spartans take home a third-place plaque. For the week of December 14, the Athlete of the Week was senior cheerleader Amber Woods. She is the captain and always leads the squad. She helps with the junior varsity team and even battles illness to compete and practice. Other nominees for Athlete of the Week during the month of December were: Alexandria McGlynn (Cheer) and Jon McLawhorn (Boys' Bowling). <<read more>>

A Message from Athletic Director Kevin McKeown
|
On behalf of our athletic staff we hope you and your family enjoyed a relaxing holiday break. As we begin our second semester the athletic office is looking forward to hosting several important winter season events including swim, bowling, wrestling, and boys and girls basketball regional tournaments. Please view our athletic website for more detailed information. I also wanted to take a moment to share with you recent research showing the lifelong benefits to a healthy and active life-style. As our children's number one influence on lifestyle habits, parents are encouraged to remain physically active with and around their children through their teenage years. By modeling these behaviors to our children, it will perpetuate a cycle of healthy living for future generations. Together we can ensure the lifelong success of our children. Go Spartans! << read more>>

Blood Drive: January 22, 2016
|
Each year, LifeSource offers area high schools the opportunity to earn valuable scholarship money. OLCHS has earned the scholarship money for the past seven years. Schools who wish to participate must host a minimum of two blood drives per year. Parents and community members can also have their donation credited to their local high school every time they donate at a community donor center or mobile blood drive. By simply providing the OLCHS donor code of OL94, the school receives credit for the donation. Please refer to the LifeSource website for a convenient donor center at http://www.lifesource.org and be sure to mention donor code OL94 when donating blood.
The school will host their Annual Fall Blood Drive on Friday, January 22, 2016, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Spartan Gym. Students are encouraged to donate blood during their gym period. Students must be at least 16-years old. A parent permission slip is required for students who are only 16-years old. Bowling Benefit Raises Money for Scholarship Fund
|
Family and friends will gather to honor the late Megan Hurckes with a birthday bowling benefit at Arena Lanes on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. The friends and family of Megan Hurckes are honoring her birthday by participating in one of her favorite past times - bowling.
Megan is the late daughter of former Oak Lawn trustee Jerry Hurckes. Since Megan's death at age ten in 2009, the Hurckes have celebrated Megan's birthday by raising money for a good cause. The Hurckes Family is taking over Arena Lanes to raise money for the Megan Hurckes Scholarship Fund. Rather than mourn her death, the family started the fund as a way to celebrate Megan's life and keep her name and memory alive. "When Megan passed away we asked people not to give flowers but donate to a memorial fund," Jerry Hurckes said.
The family has raised over $40,000, which has gone to high school students continuing on to college, grammar school students going to high school, the Children's Museum and Westside Baseball.
Megan Hurckes would have been 17 this year. She died after an ATV accident in 2009. Megan was a straight-A, fifth-grade student at Kolb Elementary School, a member of a champion girls' softball team for Westside Baseball, and an actress in the Oak Lawn Park District theater program.
The bowling benefit/birthday party kicks off at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Arena Lanes Bowling Center, at 4700 W. 103rd St. (103rd Street and Cicero Avenue). Those who are unable to attend but wish to make a donation can send checks payable to the Megan Hurckes Scholarship Foundation, c/o 7036 W. 96th St., Oak Lawn, IL, 60453. For more information about Megan's candlelight bowling birthday party and benefit, call 708-599-7302.
