Shelter-In-Place Drill Conducted, K-9 Locker Search

This message is being posted to avoid any inaccurate rumors that might lead to anxiety about student and staff safety and to keep you well-informed about issues of concern to all families in the OLCHS communities.

This morning (Tuesday, November 17, 2015) from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Oak Lawn Community High School conducted a "Shelter-In-Place" drill. The exercise was conducted by the building administration with the assistance of the Oak Lawn Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies.

While today's Shelter-In-Place drill was being conducted, K-9 units from the Oak Lawn Police Department conducted searches of the hallway and physical education lockers. The K-9 search of student lockers is part of our sustained commitment to take all reasonable and necessary steps to discourage students from bringing illegal drugs to school.

The efforts today reinforce our preeminent goal to maintain the safety and welfare of our students and staff members. Additionally, legislation requires that all schools in the state of Illinois conduct security drills annually. It is important that we prepare our students and staff members with security procedures. All of our safety exercises have been developed in concert with local agencies and are reviewed each year.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions regarding this exercise.
