Dunne Brothers Advance to Boys' Golf Sectional in Dramatic Fashion
It is every golfer's dream to walk up the eighteenth fairway of a course and have the enthusiastic crowd follow behind in anticipation of a dramatic finish on the green. For two brothers that dream came true at the Illinois High School Association Regional.

With four golfers tied after eighteen holes, there was a one-hole playoff where only three of the four would advance to the sectional. Senior Billy Dunne and freshman Chris Dunne were two of the four golfers vying for those precious spots. Both of them came through with miraculous shots on that final hole and advanced with scores of 88.

"It was so cool," said Golf Head Coach Pat Mayer. "All of the other players and coaches walked up the fairway following behind our kids on that final playoff hole. It was great to see, and it was even more special that it was brothers doing it. Then, they each hit such great shots. It was really something to see."  << read more>>

Attendance...Every Day Matters!
Success in school is linked closely with being in the classroom, joining in class discussion, and doing the assigned work on a regular basis. In the classroom, students can take full advantage of classmates' ideas, teacher explanations of assignments, and other material that enriches learning. There is no way to duplicate the same classroom experience after a student has been absent. Missing just two days a month means a student misses 10% of the school year.

Alum Returns to Share her Journalism Experiences
Teacher Patrick DiFilippo hosted alumnus Sara J. Martinez (2006) to visit his Mass Media Writing class. Martinez was able to relate back to her time as a student at OLCHS and talk about the future of journalism to the potential journalists of the class of 2016. Martinez commented, "It's weird to see how much has changed since I graduated in '06, but being back I felt like nothing had changed."

Martinez earned a bachelor's degree from Marquette University and a Masters in Journalism from the world-renowned Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Martinez began her career in media as a sophomore here at OLCHS, when Mrs. Lauren May appointed her Sports Editor for the Spartanite school newspaper.

The media business is a fast moving industry that requires the development of core writing skills and strong technical skills. Martinez works as a Software Engineer at Slate.com and lives in Washington D.C. She is responsible for writing code and developing online content for one of the world's largest online magazines.  <<read more>>

School Nurse Speaks at Annual Student Nurses Association of Illinois Convention
The school nurse, Gloria Barrera, was invited to be a guest speaker at the 66th Annual Student Nurses Association of Illinois convention.  The convention, held at Joliet Junior College, took place on Sunday, October 17, 2015.  Gloria sat on a panel of expert nurses and presented on the need for more community health nurses in IL, reviewed licensure requirements and the professional organization of school nurses (NASN), and focused on the current school nurse role as it relates to community/public health nursing practice.  Gloria's presentation was titled Community Health Nursing:  School Nursing. "The forecasted increased need for community health nurses, including those working in schools, has been identified and presented in a report through the Illinois Center for Nursing, based on the Registered Nurse Workforce Survey 2014. As the full-time licensed school nurse at OLCHS, I take on a variety of roles. For many of our students, I am the only health care professional they may have access to, except in cases of emergencies.  My role becomes even more important as the prevalence of chronic social, emotional, and other health problems keep increasing. Our elected officials at the local, state, and national level, must invest in programs and services that seek to improve the overall health and well-being outcomes of all children in Illinois and ensure they have a successful, productive, and healthy future."  <<read more>>

Girls' Cross Country Follows Jaber to Regional
After months of training, hundreds of miles run and countless bags of ice, the girls cross country team battled hard at the South Suburban Conference Red Division meet last Saturday at Reavis in Burbank. The team went in with high expectations and complete confidence that they had put in the work to achieve their goals. While they may not have earned the conference title, the team had every reason to be proud. Overall, twenty two of the twenty five girls competing for Oak Lawn ran their fastest times of the season. The Spartans finished in fourth place behind Eisenhower, Shepard and Argo.

From the start of the varsity race, Tasneem Jaber jumped out ahead of the pack and eventually finished in second place with a 3-mile time of 19:43. Running behind Jaber was the pack of Erica Ruiz, Bayan Hammad, and Jessica Sciaky. Ashley Lizak followed shortly behind en route to dropping 1:40 off her previous best time. Adaliz Chavez and Jenny Miranda rounded out the seven Spartan runners.

In the Frosh/Soph event, Jackie Hernandez, Maja Dukic, Sabrin Jaber, Pamela Urchel, and Michele Morissette competed. Each of the girls finished with personal best times. Next up for Oak Lawn is the regional meet this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Midlothian Meadows. The girls are looking for a chance to advance to the sectional.  <<read more>>

Freshman Dunne Shines in Golf Regional
Each week the Athletic Department and the Spartan Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) selects a Spartan Athlete of the Week. The recipient for the week of October 12 is freshman golfer Chris Dunne. Despite the fact that he is only a freshman, Dunne qualified for the Illinois High School Association Sectional tournament last week by winning a one-hole playoff. He finished play at the Stagg Regional by placing tenth out of 70 golfers. This accomplishment came on the heels of receiving All-Conference recognition two weeks ago at the conference tournament.  <<read more>>

Spartans Prepare for Halloween
Dressing-up in costumes and celebrating Halloween has become a tradition at Oak Lawn Community High School. The Deans' Office would like to politely remind students if they are going to participate in Halloween on Friday, October 30, to make sure their costume is school appropriate and within good judgment of the school dress code.  A student's face cannot be covered by a mask or completely covered in face paint. Costumes that are suggestive in nature should not be worn in school.  If a costume does not provide appropriate coverage, wear additional articles of clothing.  Costume props should be safe and appropriate for our crowded hallways.  Please do not bring props that violate the school discipline code such as lookalike weapons, drug paraphernalia, and gang-themed materials.  Any student wearing inappropriate costumes will be asked to change into regular clothing.  Thank you for your cooperation.  <<read more>>

Theater Program Chooses To Rock
Oak Lawn Community High School's theater program is rehearsing and preparing to rock its audiences this year. This year's school musical, American Idiot, is a musical featuring the music of the rock band Green Day and tis the story about three young men who start the show bored in suburbia and disenchanted with the world around them. They take off for the big city to discover themselves and find the temptations and perils of growing up and finding their place in the world.

This year's productions will take place on Thursday, October 22, Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 the day of the show. Tickets are available through the ticket hotline at 708-424-5200 x5920.

Musical director Billy Denton said, "We are fortunate enough to be one of the first high schools in the nation to be performing this musical; it's definitely an edgy and gritty look at the trials and tribulations of young adults and the hard realities that we all face when figuring out who we are as we grow older.  The students have been handling the material wonderfully, and it's been exciting to watch the songs many of us grew up with come to life on the stage."

Internet Safety Seminar for Parents
Internet Safety
Chicago Police Detective Charlie Hollendoner will lead a parent-only seminar at 8:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at Oak Lawn Community High School in the Little Theater. Juvenile Expungement Summit
The John Marshall Law School's Pro Bono Program and Clinic is hosting a Juvenile Expungement Summit on Thursday, November 5, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the The John Marshall Law School, 315 S. Plymouth Court, Chicago, Illinois. In order to receive services, you must pre-register for the summit by Friday, October 30th. Space is limited so we encourage people to sign up quickly!

At the summit, attorneys and students at The John Marshall Law School will provide free expungement services to those in our community who have a juvenile record. A consent form will need to be completed, which will allow the program to obtain a participant's information prior to the summit. A criminal record can be a barrier to success. One in three people in America will be arrested by the time they are 23.  All of these people will have a criminal record, even if they were released after arrest without being charged. Having a juvenile record can be a significant barrier to employment, financial aid, housing, and other opportunities.  We are so grateful for your cooperation in helping us to provide this crucial service to our community. <<read more>>
