Eid Holiday    
Pre-Arranged Absence Form
In preparation for next week's religious holiday, Eid, please have your student pick up a pre-arranged absence form in the deans' office or you may locate the form at www.olchs.org. All teachers, a parent and the student must sign the form. Completed forms can be turned into the deans' office no later than Wednesday, September 23, 2015.


Julia Child:  Eat Your Heart Out  
OLCHS is unique in that it continues to offer Culinary Arts classes. To enhance the benefits of this hands-on course, a brand new, state-of-the-art kitchen was constructed over the summer.  Culinary Arts teacher Amy Cryan contributed to the ideas and layout of the kitchen, which now includes a teacher station for modeling and demonstrating techniques.  This teacher island, also perfect for guest chefs, includes a backless range that allows for student viewing and is fully supplied with equipment.

What the school's kitchens have lacked in the past is handicapped accessible features.  The entrance door is handicapped accessible and directly to the right is an entire kitchen fitted with lower counters, sink, and cabinets.Cubbies are included in this area to ensure fire safety where all backpacks can be stored.

Other features include stainless steel appliances and maple cabinets fitted with locks.  Even the student desks are stainless steel with locking wheels so desks can be moved and used as prep islands. A new cooling refrigerator is fitted with locks and clear doors for easy viewing of the food students produce. Seven ranges, seven Kitchen Aid mixers and eight sinks allow for spacious maneuvering and cooking. Microwaves are now stored below the stainless steel countertops, allowing for more workspace. Color-coded aprons assist with group work, designating each student's role in labs: Executive chef, sous chef, apprentice, and safety/sanitation.

And no kitchen would be complete without cutting edge technology. A ceiling camera allows the teacher to zoom in on student workstations for intervention and instruction.  Six LG television screens mounted throughout the room display teacher content from the SMARTboard.

Amy Cryan plans to hold an Open House for the faculty and staff to enjoy a snack and view this state of the art classroom in the building.


Bilingual U.S. History Visits Mitchell Museum of the American Indian 
The bilingual U.S. History class took a field trip to the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian in Evanston IL with their teachers Marwa Elmasry and Patrick DiFilippo. The students were able to learn about the diversity of American Indian groups as well as view artifacts from the various native groups.  Latifa Alghssein said, "I found it interesting how the American Indians learned to survive by inventing the necessary tools to deal with their environment." Other students were interested in the clothing worn by the native peoples. Hala Alghssein referenced the clothes by saying, "I really liked the traditional hat worn by the southwest American Indians to protect them from the warm sun." The museum trip was accompanied by a research assignment that utilized the iPads to prepare the students to continue learning about U.S. history and the early inhabitants of the continent. Bashar Diab "it was great to use the iPad to capture the traditions and customs of the American Indians." The class looks forward to more enriching history activities in the future.
 
College Week:  Life After High School 
OLCHS dedicates a week to educating its students about the many opportunities afforded them after high school.  College Week, which took place September 14-17, included activities and events designed to excite students about college.  On Monday and Tuesday, students could earn prizes through a college mascot scavenger hunt on their iPads.  On Wednesday, over 70 organizations were present in the Spartan Gym for the Annual College Fair. These organizations included colleges, trade and technical schools, and military branches.  Wednesday evening all families were invited to Financial Aid Night in the Little Theater, where Frank Palmansani presented to families and students about the process of applying for financial aid. Finally, on Thursday, the Illinois Student Assistance Commission presented Scholarships 101 during periods 1, 2, and 8 in the Little Theater. Students and parents can contact Career/College Counselor Kelly Kenny for additional information. 

Sophomore Class Meeting - Herff Jones Representative 
On Monday, September 21, 2015, representatives from Herff Jones will be in the Little Theater during the study hall/lunch periods to provide information on class rings and other products. Sophomores are asked to report directly to the Little Theater during their study halls.


2014-15 Yearbook  
The wait is over! The 2014-15 Oak Lawn Community High School "Shield" Yearbooks have arrived. The yearbook staff began distributing the books on Wednesday. Yearbooks can be picked up in Room 366. Students are required to display their ID when picking up their yearbook. 
 
Members of the Class of 2015 can pick up their yearbook in the Main Office during business hours, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Graduates may have a parent or a sibling pick up the yearbook; however, friends and neighbors are not permitted.
 


 
Parent Teacher Conferences:  Wednesday, September 30

The first Parent-Teacher Conference night is:

As articulated in the Spartan Compact, parent-teacher conferences are an extremely important part of the two-way communication between parents and teachers. Parents interested in checking on their student's progress this fall are asked to take advantage of this day. Conferences are also a place for parents to tell teachers things about their child: How he likes to learn. What she says about the class at home. How he enjoys spending free time. What she says about other students in class.

Teachers will be alphabetically located in the Spartan and Auditorium Gyms.  No appointment is necessary.  Please take the opportunity to meet your son or daughter's teachers, guidance counselor, dean, activity sponsor, or coach. The school will have Arabic, Polish, and Spanish interpreters available to assist parents during both evenings. 

Again this year, staff will be on-hand to assist parents in updating their SchoolMessenger, enrolling to receive the weekly electronic Oak Leaflet Newsletter, and creating a Family Access account for gradebook access. Representatives from Herff Jones will be in the Spartan Lobby for underclassmen ring orders and graduation materials. The Athletic Booster Club will also be selling Spartanwear and related merchandise. The PTSA will also have membership and scholarship information available.

Back by popular demand, OLCHS is hosting Smilin' Clyde's Hotdogs in the Spartan Lobby during Parent-Teacher Conferences. Don't worry about rushing home to eat. Come visit teachers and purchase one of Clyde's famous hotdogs. 

Blood Drive:  Friday, September 25, 2015 
Each year, LifeSource offers area high schools the opportunity to earn valuable scholarship money. Oak Lawn Community High School has earned the scholarship money for the past seven years. Schools who wish to participate must host a minimum of two blood drives per year. Parents and community members can also have their donation credited to their local high school every time they donate at a community donor center or mobile blood drive. By simply providing the OLCHS donor code of OL94, the school receives credit for the donation. Please refer to the LifeSource website for a convenient donor center at http://www.lifesource.org and be sure to mention donor code OL94 when donating blood.

The school will host their Annual Fall Blood Drive on Friday, September 25, 2015, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Spartan Gym.  Students are encouraged to donate blood during their gym period. Students must be at least 16-years old.  A parent permission slip is required for students who are only 16-years old.   

Parents and community members are encouraged to visit a community donor center or mobile blood drive when eligible. Individuals are eligible to donate blood every 56 days. Be sure to mention donor code OL94 when donating blood.

Student-Parent Handbook Reminders 
Attendance Reminders!
To ensure that students are successful please make school attendance a priority. It is important for students to attend school each day and to receive a good night's sleep. Parents and students should make every effort to avoid scheduling dental and medical appointments during the school day. If an appointment must be made during the school day, efforts should be made to vary the periods missed to attend such appointments.
 
Pre-Arranged Absence Form
When students need to leave during the school day for situations such as court appearances, funerals, and dental/medical appointments, a Pre-Arranged Absence Form (available online or in the Deans'/Attendance Office) must be completed and submitted prior to the appointment.
 
Student Deliveries
As part of our building security expectations, the school does not accept phone messages, forgotten gym clothes, lunch money, homework assignments, and projects that need to be delivered to students. Please make sure students leave home fully prepared for school. 
 

Social Suspension Policy:  New for 2015-16! 
A social suspension policy was adopted for 2015-16 OLCHS Student-Parent Handbook. The new policy was highlighted at the PRIDE Class Meetings and reinforced during the Deans' Office lunch/study hall presentations. Parents and students are encouraged to read the policy carefully to avoid receiving the social suspension consequence. Under a social suspension, students are not permitted to participate in athletic or extracurricular team/clubs and are not permitted to attend school dances, sporting events, and other school-sponsored events.
 
Student-Parent Handbook, Page 45: Social Suspension. A social suspension is one in which a student is not allowed to attend school functions outside of the regular school day. These functions include, but are not limited to, being a member of an athletic or extracurricular team or club, and attending school dances, sporting events, and other school-sponsored events. Permission to attend these functions for a student who is on a social suspension may only be granted by a dean or administrator. Actions that may result in a social suspension along with other consequences include: a) an accumulation of eleven referrals; b) failure to serve two Saturday Detentions; c) inappropriate behavior at an after-school event; d) being in the building after-school hours without permission; e) an act of gross misconduct; f) excessive unexcused absences; and g) insubordination to a staff member particularly after-school hours. Students are placed on social probation for at least 3 months but can appeal to their dean after 1 month of demonstrating improved behavior.  <<Link to Student-Parent Handbook>>
