Back-To-School Information

Back to School
The board of education, administration, and staff are excited about the start of the school year and look forward to welcoming students back to campus.
 
First Day of School: Tuesday, August 18, 2015. The first day of classes for all students is Tuesday, August 18, 2015. Freshmen and transfer students should report to their first-period classroom by 7:45 a.m. for the freshmen/new student orientation program. The program is conducted by the Student Helper organization. The Student Helpers will be visible throughout the building the first week of school to assist students in finding their classrooms and lockers. Look for the Student Helper T-shirts!

After the program, freshmen/transfer students will attend their classes following Bell Schedule "C". Upperclassmen should also follow Bell Schedule "C" and arrive to their first-period class by 8:50 a.m. The PACE Bus will begin running the OLCHS route on this day according to Bell Schedule 'C"; therefore, freshmen/transfer students will need to secure their own morning transportation on this day. Student Drop-Off & Pick-Up, South Parking Lot.
Over the summer, the South Parking Lot was reconfigured to allow for an easier and safer way to drop-off and pick-up students. Please refer to the illustrations to learn the traffic flow patterns for morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups.

 
Calculators Required. All students, freshman through seniors, enrolled in a math class are required to have a graphing calculator. The school recommends the Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus graphing calculator. The calculators can be purchased from any major retailer, and most have specials or deals they run before students return to school. Students can get more information from their Math teacher at the beginning of the school year.
 
Hallway Lock/Locker
Locks will be distributed to freshman students during the iPad/Textbook Pick-Up Days. Returning students should use their previous year's lock or purchase a new lock ($6.00) from the dean assistants in the student cafeteria on the first day of school or in the Deans' Office throughout the school year.  <<web link>> 
 
ID Photograph. ID's will be distributed during the iPad/Textbook Pick-Up Days. Students who still require an ID photograph should report to the Media Center on the First Day of School.
 
iPad Insurance. Oak Lawn Community High School is providing and administering a protection plan for students and parents as part of our 1:1 iPad program. Enrollment in the program is optional with the understanding that parents/students carry the full liability if no protection plan is selected. The iPad Protection Plan has been available in the OLCHS Webstore since June and will continue to be available until Monday, August 17, 2015 (midnight). <<web link>>

iPad Distribution. Students who did not attend one of the 6 iPad/Textbook Pick-Up Days, should pick-up their iPad in the Media Center on the first day of school.
 
PACE Bus. The PACE Bus company will operate their Hometown/Bridgeview Route 385 beginning on Tuesday, August 18, 2015. Please refer to the school's website for more information. <<web link>>
 
Parking Permits. Student parking permits are available to Juniors and Seniors for $150/school year and can be purchased through the OLCHS WebStore from the school's website, www.olchs.org. Parking decals will be distributed during the first week of school. <<web link>>
 
Schedules. Schedules will be distributed during the iPad/Textbook Pick-Up Days. Schedules are available through the Skyward App on the student's iPad. Students should review their schedules for changes in room numbers and teacher assignments.
 
Student-Parent Handbook/Planner. The Student-Parent Handbook/Planner is available online from the school's website. Students are encouraged to download a copy of the planner to their iPad. Reminder! As part of the online process, a link to an online version of the handbook was provided to families and they were asked to provide an electronic acknowledgement of the handbook/planner. <<web link >>
 
Textbooks. Students will be issued textbooks during the iPad/Textbook Pick-Up Days. Students who have not picked up their textbooks should report to the Textbook Distribution Room 108 before or after school.
 
PE Uniforms. Physical Education uniforms were sold on campus on August 12, 2015. Uniforms can also be purchased the first week of school during select lunch periods or at Burbank Sports located at 5500 West 79th Street, Burbank, Illinois, 60459; 708/422-7777.
 
Yearbook Photographs. Yearbook Photographs will be taken on Thursday, August 20, 2015, during the student's Physical Education/Health/Driver Education class in the Spartan Gym. Seniors should have had their picture taken during the summer at one of the senior portrait sessions on campus. VIP Studios will be on campus again on Wednesday, August 26 and Thursday, August 27, 2015, for senior retakes and limited head/shoulder shots only. Yearbooks. Yearbooks can be purchased through the OLCHS WebStore from the school's website, www.olchs.org. <<web link>>

Athletic Booster Club Membership. Parents and students can secure Athletic Booster Club memberships ($15/person) through the OLCHS WebStore from the school's website, www.olchs.org. <<web link>>
 
Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) Membership. Parents and students can secure PTSA memberships ($8.00) through the OLCHS WebStore from the school's website, www.olchs.org. <<web link>>
 
Skylert/SchoolMessenger. Families can update their Skylert/School Messenger settings through the "Skylert" tab within Skyward Family Access. The information is used to determine what telephone numbers, email addresses, and text messages families will receive notifications at in case of emergencies or for general information.
 
Sodexo Student Cafeteria. Families interested in putting money on the student ID card can submit payment to the school or use the online "My School Bucks" website, www.myschoolbucks.com. Money can be submitted throughout the school year to either a cafeteria cashier or to the staff in the Main Office/Room 126. <<web link>>

iPad Protection Plans Available Until August 17

Oak Lawn Community High School is providing and administering a protection plan for students and parents as part of our 1:1 iPad program. Enrollment in the OLCHS administered program is optional with the understanding that parents/students carry the full liability if no protection plan is selected. To participate in the OLCHS iPad Protection Plan you will have the option to purchase into the plan during registration through the online OLCHS Webstore (RevTrack). Coverage must be purchased on or before Monday, August 17, 2015 (midnight), in order to be eligible for this school year.

 

The OLCHS plan covers "accidental damage" to the device and is designed to limit a family's financial responsibilities for any damages as described in the protection plan section below. The current price to replace an iPad is $500.

 

Program Fee/Coverage: a) Non-refundable fee: $25 (fee will not be prorated for partial years or semesters, is not eligible for fee waiver nor payment plan); b) Annual Benefit Limit: $1,100; c) Coverage: Repair/Replacement of school issued iPad; d) Effective Date: Based on payment of fee; and f) Expiration Date: Last day of school year or date of withdrawal.

 

Coverage: a) Accidental Damage: Pays for accidental damage caused by liquid spills, drops, or any other unintentional event. Insurance plan is voided if iPad is not protected by a case; b) Theft: Pays for loss due to theft; the claim requires a police report to be filed; c) Fire: Pays for damage of the iPad due to fire; the claim must be accompanied by an official fire report from the investigating authority; d) Electrical Surge: Pays for damage to the device due to an electrical surge; and e) Natural Disasters: Pays for loss or damage caused by natural disasters.  <<read more>> 

    


Cross Countries Students Return from Bolivia

Eleven members from the Oak Lawn Community High School Cross Countries student organization highlighted their trip to Bolivia at a recent Board of Education meeting. The students had the opportunity to share their experiences and to thank the school/community for their support. While in Bolivia, the students completed work at a rural hospital and presented a $12,500 donation to the hospital.  Way to go Spartans!
