Baseball/Softball Set to Bring Community Together
|
When the baseball and softball programs were thinking of ways to raise funds for their respective programs, many thoughts ran across the board. However, the two teams kept coming back to one idea - uniting staff, parents and alumni. The result is the Spartan Baseball and Softball Spring Bash.
The two teams are coming together to throw one big event. On Friday, April 24, they will host a 21 years and older live music event at 115 Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park (3359 W. 115th St.). For just $35, the night includes food, open bar, and live music being performed by FNMC (Friday Night Music Club), which features Oak Lawn English teacher Billy Denton as the lead singer. This idea is to bring all stakeholders from the Oak Lawn Community High School area together to celebrate, reconnect and have fun. There will also be 50-50 raffles held. Pass the word, bring some friends, and help raise money for a couple of athletic programs. The night is sure to be filled with laughs and good times. For more information, contact head baseball coach Bill Gerny at wgerny@olchs.org or head softball coach Brian Frangella at bfrangella@olchs.org. <<read more>>

Senior Visits Pivotal Historical Sites with Bridging Communities
|
Over spring break, senior Issar Hindi travelled with the Council on American-Islamic Relations Chicago (CAIR) on a multi-day educational tour of Arkansas to witness historical sites pivotal to our cultural history. Students visited the Rohwer War Relocation Center, a World War II internment camp for Japanese-Americans; the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, a museum dedicated to preserving black history; and Little Rock Central High School, the school where President Eisenhower sent in federal troops to escort the "Little Rock Nine" into the building in 1957. CAIR and the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) founded the youth program Bridging Communities. The program strives to educate Muslim and Japanese American youth about the history and circumstances surrounding the internment of Japanese American citizens during World War II. Through workshops that foster cross-cultural dialogue and challenge preconceived assumptions about identity, Bridging Communities brings together students of many backgrounds to ensure factors leading to discrimination and racial profiling are not perpetuated, according to the CAIR website. "The highlight was experiencing history first-hand," explained Hindi. "We get to read about [the places], but seeing them was pretty cool." <<read more>>
