Active Shooter/Lockdown Drill

Oak Lawn Community High School is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students and staff members.

On Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at 9:30 a.m., the school will conduct an Active Shooter/Lockdown Drill.  All students and staff members will participate in the drill.  The drill is expected to take less than 15 minutes.  The drill is part of the school's ongoing emergency preparedness and crisis planning.  The drill will not involve loud noises, simulated gunfire, a large police presence, or a building evacuation.  Similar to the other state-mandated drills such as fire and tornado drills, the active shooter drill provides an opportunity for the school staff to practice their emergency plans, evaluate the effectiveness of the plans, and recommend necessary changes to the plans.

The drills are also designed to keep students informed on emergency procedures and steps to take to maintain their own safety.  If you have any questions about the drill, please contact Assistant Principal Joseph McCurdy at 708/741-5613.  <<read more>>

Media Center and STEM Club to Host Teen Tech Week

OLCHS has committed itself to educating its students with 21st century technology.  One such way is its annual Teen Tech Week. Teen Tech Week will take place March 23 through March 26. The Media Center staff will join forces with the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Club to host an entire week of technology informed and literary events. In addition, an e-Waste collection will take place all week in the cafeteria.

Monday's event is titled "Meet Your Maker."  Roth Mobot in the Media Center will entertain students. Roth Mobot is an experimental electronics duo that manipulates circuits from old toys, audio greeting cards, and discarded electronics to convert them into custom audio and musical instruments.  On Tuesday, airplane masters can win prizes during all lunch periods in the Media Center.  "Not Your Average Paper Airplane Contest" will allow students to compete for the farthest throw.  On Wednesday the Abe Lincoln breakfast will take place at 7:45 a.m. in the Media Center, and a Science Quiz Bowl will occur during all lunch periods in the cafeteria.  Finally, the after school book club will take place Thursday after school in the Media Center.  Free copies of the young adult book The Compound were distributed to interested students. The Compound is a 2008 novel by S.A. Bodeen that centers upon a young boy who, fearing a nuclear attack, has been living in a compound for six years.  <<read more>>
