Cinderella's Closet: Saturday, March 7
|
The Parent Teacher Student Association, once again will sponsor its Cinderella's Closet program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015.
The program, now in its third year, enables high school girls to buy prom dresses, shoes and purses for just $10 per item. Other items, such as for hair and other accessories, jewelry and even makeup, also are for sale.
Maria Vanderwarren, assistant to Superintendent Michael Riordan; and special-education teacher Kate Mellone have been overseeing the program with the support of the PTSA. "We really believe in this and it's a great thing for the kids. They feel better going to the prom and they look as good as they would if they had bought the dress in a bridal shop," Vanderwarren said. The program's popularity is growing each year throughout the community. <<read more>>

Board Approves iPads for 2015-16 School Year
|
The Board of Education has approved the one to one iPad initiative for all students for the 2015-2016 school year. Every student enrolled at OLCHS will be provided with an iPad in August, 2015. Teachers will follow the SAMR model for implementation of the iPads. SAMR is a structure for technology integration in education. It is a two-year framework that teachers will use to assess and evaluate technology use in the classroom. Next year teachers will include lessons that reach the Substitution (direct substitute with no functional change) and Augmentation (direct substitute with functional improvements) levels. In 2016-17, teachers will include lessons that reach the Modification (technology allows for significant redesign) and Redefinition (technology allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable) levels.
Teachers hope that iPads will enhance their classes by creating a student-centered classroom that increases student engagement and opportunities for differentiated instruction. Teachers can also use iPads to encourage creativity and problem solving and provide opportunities for enrichment and remediation. Faculty and staff have already been trained on many of the tools that iPads offer. This includes iTunes U, a Learning Management System that is the holding area for all class materials. Students can access these materials from iTunes U. Many teachers and students are already using many Apps as well, such as Notability, iMovie, Adobe Voice, Geogebra, and ShowMe. Showbie will be the Collection Center where teachers create assignment folders and students then upload their completed assignments to these folders. Teachers grade these assignments on the iPad and students receive notification of the graded file. Teachers can leave feedback in the form of written notes or voice notes. To learn more about the school's iPad initiative, visit the school's website at: click here.

During the 2014-15 school year, public schools in Illinois are required to continue assessing students for accountability as mandated by the United States Department of Education. In previous years OLCHS was required to give the Prairie State Achievement Exam (PSAE) to all students in Grade 11. This test has been discontinued and has been replaced by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). The PARCC assessment will measure student proficiency relative to the Common Core State Standards.
This year's PARCC exam will only be given to students enrolled in specific courses. Students enrolled in English 1, LRP English I and Honors English I will be given the ELA I PARCC assessment. Similarly, students enrolled in Algebra I, Algebra Block, LRP Algebra Block, and Honors Algebra will be administered the Algebra I PARCC assessment. While these courses are traditionally taken by freshmen, all students enrolled in these courses will take the required assessment, regardless of enrolled grade level. Students who are required to test and their parent/guardians will be mailed more specific information next week.
There are two testing windows within this school year. The first corresponds to the PARCC Performance Based Assessment (PBA). The PBA will be given the week of March 9 - 13. The second is the PARCC End of Year Assessment (EOY). The EOY assessment will be given the week of April 27- May 1.
During those weeks, we will be running on a late start schedule for all students. Students who are required to test will report to school each day at 7:45 am. After testing, they will join the rest of the student body and begin a modified school schedule. A copy of the schedule for the week of March 9 is on the reverse side of this letter.
Additional information about the PARCC assessment, including test format, sample test items and notes about scoring is available online at www.parcconline.org.
