Spartans Narrowly Miss Conference Championship Title but Retain Tossup Leader
|
In the past two weeks, the Scholastic Bowl team has represented OLCHS in a bright light. Last week, the two teams combined for a 5-1 record, and were paced by Stephanie Fetzer, Brea Brennan and Danielle Allen with 1 tossup, Ayman Salah and Ryan Alsot with 2 tossups, Elizabeth Gonzalez and Allie Templin with 3 tossups, Ryan Quinn with 7 tossups, Jade Ryerson and Gina Snyder with 14 tossups and Trevor Spreadbury with 21 tossups.
The Spartans rode this wave of success into this week's conference meet, and did not disappoint. The JV team earned a 3rd place finish in conference, with All-Conference accolades going to Jade Ryerson and Gina Snyder. The varsity team fought their way into the championship match, and in an absolute thriller, the match came down to the very last bonus question, with our Spartans narrowly missing first place. This was our varsity team's best finish in years, and they accomplished this without having any seniors on the roster. A special congratulations to varsity member Trevor Spreadbury, who led the entire SSC conference with 67 tossups, earning him All-Conference honors. In addition, Trevor was nominated for the IHSSCA All-Sectional Team for his superb work this year.
The conference season was a monumental success, and the Spartans look to continue their successful run as they prepare for regional's in two weeks. <<read more>>

During the 2014-15 school year, public schools in Illinois are required to continue assessing students for accountability as mandated by the United States Department of Education. In previous years OLCHS was required to give the Prairie State Achievement Exam (PSAE) to all students in Grade 11. This test has been discontinued and has been replaced by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). The PARCC assessment will measure student proficiency relative to the Common Core State Standards.
This year's PARCC exam will only be given to students enrolled in specific courses. Students enrolled in English 1, LRP English I and Honors English I will be given the ELA I PARCC assessment. Similarly, students enrolled in Algebra I, Algebra Block, LRP Algebra Block, and Honors Algebra will be administered the Algebra I PARCC assessment. While these courses are traditionally taken by freshmen, all students enrolled in these courses will take the required assessment, regardless of enrolled grade level. Students who are required to test and their parent/guardians will be mailed more specific information next week.
There are two testing windows within this school year. The first corresponds to the PARCC Performance Based Assessment (PBA). The PBA will be given the week of March 9 - 13. The second is the PARCC End of Year Assessment (EOY). The EOY assessment will be given the week of April 27- May 1.
During those weeks, we will be running on a late start schedule for all students. Students who are required to test will report to school each day at 7:45 am. After testing, they will join the rest of the student body and begin a modified school schedule. A copy of the schedule for the week of March 9 is on the reverse side of this letter.
Additional information about the PARCC assessment, including test format, sample test items and notes about scoring is available online at www.parcconline.org.

Cinderella's Closet: Saturday, March 7
|
The Parent Teacher Student Association, once again will sponsor its Cinderella's Closet program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015.
The program, now in its third year, enables high school girls to buy prom dresses, shoes and purses for just $10 per item. Other items, such as for hair and other accessories, jewelry and even makeup, also are for sale.
Maria Vanderwarren, assistant to Superintendent Michael Riordan; and special-education teacher Kate Mellone have been overseeing the program with the support of the PTSA. "We really believe in this and it's a great thing for the kids. They feel better going to the prom and they look as good as they would if they had bought the dress in a bridal shop," Vanderwarren said. The program's popularity is growing each year throughout the community. <<read more>>
