Staff Appreciated With a Week of Treats

The 2015 Staff Appreciation Week, sponsored by Student Council, the PTSA, Pep Club and other clubs, included some new twists this year.  This year's theme, which took place February 9-12, was Orange You Glad You Work Here? We Are!  Students were encouraged to write notes of appreciation to their teachers, and these notes were placed in faculty mailboxes.  On Monday, the staff was treated to a hot breakfast in the faculty caf.  Staff members also entered a raffle for Spartan-themed prizes. On Tuesday, the staff enjoyed a yogurt and toppings bar.  On Wednesday, staff enjoyed Mariano's freshly squeezed orange juice with bagels in the staff caf.  Of course, Appreciation Week would not be complete without wrapping it up with a Spartan Jell-O cake!  <<read more>>

SouthtownStar Newspaper Features Upcoming Cinderella's Closet

The Parent Teacher Student Association, once again will sponsor its Cinderella's Closet program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015.

The program, now in its third year, enables high school girls to buy prom dresses, shoes and purses for just $10 per item. Other items, such as for hair and other accessories, jewelry and even makeup, also are for sale.

Maria Vanderwarren, assistant to Principal Michael Riordan; and special-education teacher Kate Mellone have been overseeing the program with the support of the PTSA. "We really believe in this and it's a great thing for the kids. They feel better going to the prom and they look as good as they would if they had bought the dress in a bridal shop," Vanderwarren said. The program's popularity is growing each year throughout the community.  <<read more>>
