Crafting for a Cause  -Paint the Gym Purple

Oak Lawn Community High School students are crafting for a cause. Support Staff member Cyndee Hughes has been working with the Media Center Makerspace students to create a quilt that will be raffled off at the Paint the Gym Purple game on Friday, February 13, 2015. Staff members donated old t-shirts to make the quilt, and Hughes recruited crafty students to churn out the quilt in just 5 days. Says sophomore Saori Cabalona, "It was fun, I got to spend time with my friends, and it was for a good cause."

In addition, Student Council members have been creating the very popular Duct Tape pens that will also be sold for the scholarship fund. Junior Yasir Muhammad stated that while doing something for a good cause he 'was actually enjoying' what he was doing. The pens will be sold for $3 or two for $5.

This year, Paint the Gym Purple will benefit "Spartan Survivors" -students who have had a parent or guardian or themselves been affected by cancer can apply for the scholarship.

Raffle tickets and pens can be purchased in the Media Center. The tickets and items will also be available at the game on Friday, February 13, 2015.

Oak Lawn Shows Off Male Student-Athletes As Ruane Wins Ultimate Spartan

Ultimate-Spartan

It all started with a tremendous, eight-minute group dance, it moved to classy tuxedos, and ended with very talented dance routines and comedy acts. It was the third annual Ultimate Spartan competition at Oak Lawn Community High School Saturday night. Just like the past two years, the evening was a huge success. And when it was all over, Peter Ruane walked away with honor of being named the 2014-15 Ultimate Spartan. Josh Prince took second place and Joe Cosenza was third. Omar Lopez and Vince Olejniczak definitely showed a different side of themselves too and shined on stage as well.

The event started as a fundraiser for the Softball program, and it has grown into the can't-miss night of the year where some of the school's top male student-athletes are shown off in their own creative world. The guys danced, created their own interviews, made the crowd laugh, made them cheer and ultimately helped the softball program a ton of money. The fundraiser was once again a success as it raised more than $1,000 for the softball program and helped purchase new helmets for the entire program.

The night was awesome with the appreciated help of hosts Billy Denton and Bill Gerny, audio/visual consultants Marcus Wargin and Eileen Jones, and the choreographer of the opening dance Jessica Shekleton. Thank you to everyone involved.

MSA Hosts Palestine Children's Relief Speaker

MSA-PCRF-Speaker

The OLCHS Muslim Student Association (MSA) hosted Rania Sadeq, the Youth Coordinator for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF). An organization that helps children in the middle east who have birth defects, are injured by war, or are just in need of medical attention. Sadeq's role in the PCRF is to engage youth to become involved through volunteerism. The MSA hosted the event in an effort to encourage students to get involved and to help students realize they can make a difference. The MSA plans to conduct a fundraiser to help children overseas who are in need of hats, scarves, and gloves. The donations collected will be distributed by the PCRF.

Spartan Anglers Build Fishing Rods

Fishing Club

Members of the Spartan Fishing Team had the opportunity to build their own fishing rods.  John Neubauer, Andy Jensen, Jonathon Osipczuk, Justin Sullivan, and Will Conroy attended a seminar by Al Hutchinson, member of the Custom Rods Builders Guild, at the Bass Pro Shop in Bolingbrook. Hutchinson provided the team with 7 foot St. Croix spinning rod blanks and the members attached the rod handles, reel seats, and guides.  The process took about eight hours to complete.  Helping Hutchinson and the students were Illinois B.A.S.S. Nation members Frank Labanowski and Mike Sleddon.  You can check out the anglers in action through this video link.

Yearbook Staff Receives Photoshop Training

The Shield Yearbook Staff strives to be on the cutting edge of technology. To keep this edge, the staff scheduled Josten's Representative Regina Murray to conduct a PhotoShop workshop on removing backgrounds from photographs. The workshop was a fantastic way for students to refresh some of their Photoshop skills and to learn some new techniques for the yearbook.

Murray conducts Photoshop workshops on a regular basis for her schools.  Yearbook Adviser Mr. DiFilippo proclaimed, "Regina Murray is a Master of Photoshop. Each year, she provides training and keeps our yearbook layout fresh." The Yearbook Club and the Spartanite Student Newspaper will use the newly mastered techniques at the upcoming IHSA Journalism Sectional Tournament in April.  The clubs hope that the PhotoShop techniques will also build excitement for the 2014-2015 yearbook, which will debut in September.

The 2014-15 Shield Yearbook can be purchased online at www.jostensyearbooks.com or by contacting Patrick DiFilippo at pdifilippo@olchs.org.  The last date to purchase a yearbook is Friday, May 15, 2015.

Spartans Host Teens for Jeans

Did you know those jeans you outgrew or the ones you have just lying around could help a homeless teen in need? Over one million young people experience homelessness in the U.S. every year. When they arrive at a shelter, one of the items they request most is a pair of jeans - that can be worn multiple times between washes, can be dressed up or dressed down, and any size.

The school's drive will continue until Wednesday, February 11. Collection boxes are located in the Spartan Lobby, Student Services Office, Media Center, the Cafeteria Office, and participating classrooms. Not only will we be able to help young people, but our school will be eligible to win prizes for our work -- the top collecting high school will be awarded a $5,000 school grant, and the school that collects the most jeans will win a private school concert with The Vamps!

If this is something you would really like to see at our school, bring as many jeans as you can! Spread the word to family and friends! Also, like our Teens 4 Jeans Facebook page. For more information, see Mrs. Kenny in the Student Services office. Over the past two years, OLCHS has collected over 1,400 pairs. Let's do it again Spartans! Bowling Benefit Raises Money for Scholarship Fund

Family and friends will gather to honor the late Megan Hurckes with a birthday bowling benefit at Arena Lanes on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. The friends and family of Megan Hurckes are honoring her birthday by participating in one of her favorite past times - bowling.

Megan is the late daughter of former Oak Lawn trustee Jerry Hurckes. Since Megan's death at age ten in 2009, the Hurckes have celebrated Megan's birthday by raising money for a good cause. The Hurckes Family is taking over Arena Lanes to raise money for the Megan Hurckes Scholarship Fund. Rather than mourn her death, the family started the fund as a way to celebrate Megan's life and keep her name and memory alive. "When Megan passed away we asked people not to give flowers but donate to a memorial fund," Jerry Hurckes said.
