Boys Bowling Team Steamrolls to State Finals

For the first time in Oak Lawn Community High School's history, the boys bowling team won the South Suburban Conference, the Illinois High School Association Regional Championship, and the IHSA Sectional Championship all in the same year. And that now leads them to this weekend's IHSA State Finals.

Last weekend was the sectional meet, and the Spartans beat out 15 area schools to finish in first place. Three bowlers finished in the Top Ten individually as Dan Kirby finished fifth, Dylan Catalano-Wild finished in sixth and Cody Bulow finished eighth.

"We were not in first place all day and climbed from sixth place after the second game to second place going into the final (and sixth game)" said head coach Megan Schillo. "We edged out Taft by shooting our best game of the day, 1,107 pins."

The week before that featured the regional meet. There, two Spartans earned medals as Ryan Kirby finished first as the individual champion and Catalano-Wild finished second.  <<read more>>

Blood Drive Collects Over 130 Pints

Senior Class President Sadik Odeh was one of the 130+ students who donated blood today. Each year, LifeSource offers area high schools the opportunity to earn scholarship money. Oak Lawn Community High School has earned the scholarship money for the past six years. Schools who wish to participate must host a minimum of two blood drives per year. Parents and community members can also have their donation credited to their local high school every time they donate at a community donor center or mobile blood drive. By simply providing the OLCHS donor code of OL94, the school receives credit for the donation. Please refer to the LifeSource website for a convenient donor center and be sure to mention donor code OL94 when donating blood.

Parents and community members are encouraged to visit a community donor center or mobile blood drive when eligible. Individuals are eligible to donate blood every 56 days. Be sure to mention donor code OL94 when donating blood.

Spartans Host Teens for Jeans

Did you know those jeans you outgrew or the ones you have just lying around could help a homeless teen in need? Over one million young people experience homelessness in the U.S. every year. When they arrive at a shelter, one of the items they request most is a pair of jeans - that can be worn multiple times between washes, can be dressed up or dressed down, and any size.

The school's drive will continue until Wednesday, February 11. Collection boxes are located in the Spartan Lobby, Student Services Office, Media Center, the Cafeteria Office, and participating classrooms. Not only will we be able to help young people, but our school will be eligible to win prizes for our work -- the top collecting high school will be awarded a $5,000 school grant, and the school that collects the most jeans will win a private school concert with The Vamps!

If this is something you would really like to see at our school, bring as many jeans as you can! Spread the word to family and friends! Also, like our Teens 4 Jeans Facebook page. For more information, see Mrs. Kenny in the Student Services office. Over the past two years, OLCHS has collected over 1,400 pairs. Let's do it again Spartans! Bowling Benefit Raises Money for Scholarship Fund

Family and friends will gather to honor the late Megan Hurckes with a birthday bowling benefit at Arena Lanes on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. The friends and family of Megan Hurckes are honoring her birthday by participating in one of her favorite past times - bowling.

Megan is the late daughter of former Oak Lawn trustee Jerry Hurckes. Since Megan's death at age ten in 2009, the Hurckes have celebrated Megan's birthday by raising money for a good cause. The Hurckes Family is taking over Arena Lanes to raise money for the Megan Hurckes Scholarship Fund. Rather than mourn her death, the family started the fund as a way to celebrate Megan's life and keep her name and memory alive. "When Megan passed away we asked people not to give flowers but donate to a memorial fund," Jerry Hurckes said.
