OLCHS Announces Illinois State Scholars
|
OLCHS is pleased to announce that 26 students from the Class of 2015 have been recognized as Illinois State Scholars. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) is the state agency that recognizes the top Illinois high school students annually with this distinction. The following students were named 2015-16 Illinois State Scholars: Omar Abdelrahman, Ahmad Abdulla, Laura Akouris, Ciara Berry, Marisa Castrogiovanni, Claire Ewers, Elise Fetzer, Natalie Glab, Noah Goebel, Kali Graziano, Dana Greene, Megan Kusturin, Andrew LaRusso, Nathan Lehocky, Rocky Martin, Abby Mendoza, Nicholas Minnella, Marcus Montes, David Nejdl, Emmet Nugent, Sean Nugent, Anna Oswald, Elizabeth Stepp, Klaudia Swigon, Natalie Taylor, and Afreen Yasin. Congratulations Spartans!
Illinois State Scholars represent approximately the top 10 percent of high school seniors from 671 different high schools across the state. Selection is based on SAT, ACT, or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores, and/or class rank at the end of the junior year. High school guidance counselors work with ISAC to determine the winners. This year, over 18,000 students statewide received this honor.
ISAC encourages Illinois families to utilize the many resources available on its website, www.ISAC.org, including a calendar of free financial aid and college access events, Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion workshops to assist in the application process, as well as applications for grants and scholarships administered by ISAC. In addition, students can find out how to access free one-on-one assistance and mentoring in the college admissions process. <<read more>>

Fence Installed for Student Safety |
Over Winter Break, a fence was reinstalled along the North Drive to help maintain good relationships with our neighbors. Since the original fence was removed a few years ago, vehicular traffic along 93rd Street has increased and students have been able to randomly exit the building through the parking lot. The fence will control access to campus and increase student safety.
Drivers are asked to use the designated drop-off/pick-up areas on the North Drive, Austin Avenue, or the South Drive. Students should not be dropped-off or picked-up along 93rd Street, 95th Street, or Southwest Highway.
The Southwest Highway Horseshoe Drive/Visitors Parking Lot is for special education buses and students with disabilities. Please do not drop-off or pick-up students in this area.
Please understand that hundreds of students, staff, and community members arrive and depart from our campus usually at the same time every day. Please allow yourself adequate time to deal with the resulting increased traffic and unavoidable delays. <<read more>>

Bowling Benefit Raises Money for Scholarship Fund
|
Family and friends will gather to honor the late Megan Hurckes with a birthday bowling benefit at Arena Lanes on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. The friends and family of Megan Hurckes are honoring her birthday by participating in one of her favorite past times - bowling.
Megan is the late daughter of former Oak Lawn trustee Jerry Hurckes. Since Megan's death at age ten in 2009, the Hurckes have celebrated Megan's birthday by raising money for a good cause. The Hurckes Family is taking over Arena Lanes to raise money for the Megan Hurckes Scholarship Fund. Rather than mourn her death, the family started the fund as a way to celebrate Megan's life and keep her name and memory alive. "When Megan passed away we asked people not to give flowers but donate to a memorial fund," Jerry Hurckes said.
The family has raised over $40,000, which has gone to high school students continuing on to college, grammar school students going to high school, the Children's Museum and Westside Baseball.
The bowling benefit/birthday party kicks off at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Arena Lanes Bowling Center, at 4700 W. 103rd St. (103rd Street and Cicero Avenue).
Those who are unable to attend but wish to make a donation can send checks payable to the Megan Hurckes Scholarship Foundation, c/o 7036 W. 96th St., Oak Lawn, IL, 60453. For more information about Megan's candlelight bowling birthday party and benefit, call 708-599-7302
