Student Artists Paint Mural for English Department
Over the past ten years, several student artists at Oak Lawn Community High School have beautified the hallways with their art. Last school year the Visual Arts Club decided to pair paintings with disciplines throughout the school. Ultimately, the club plans to have a mural highlighting each subject in the school. The first subject to receive this gift of a mural is the English department. The mural, located outside of Office 20, is a rendition of Van Gogh's Starry Night and was created by alumnae Becky Mackowiak, Yara Ismail, Jannah Mahmoud, Maria McLaughlin and various students in Visual Arts Club. This school year, club members added quotes from several pieces of literature to customize it to the discipline of English. This is the eighth mural created by Spartan artists. Stay tuned for murals to showcase other disciplines.

Spartan Elves Host Special Holiday Party
Over sixty members of Oak Lawn Community High School's Student Council and National Honor Society helped host a special holiday party for Keyser Family Pediatric Cancer Center patients and their families.
Student volunteers, all dressed as Spartan Elves in red and green, assisted with food service, craft tables, and mingling. Additional entertainment was provided by Nick Vera as DJ, Tom Repetny as photobooth operator, as well as numerous professional photographers on hand to take free portraits for families. The highlight of the evening was the arrival of Santa himself who read a story to the children, took photos, and listened to holiday wishes before returning to the North Pole.
The Keyser Family Pediatric Cancer Center at Advocate Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn is an 8,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility developed to deliver high quality outpatient care in a comfortable and healing environment. Media Center Awarded Duck Tape Grant
The Media Center Makerspace is in full bloom! The area was recently awarded a generous Duck Tape grant from ShurTech Brands. The prestigious grant, completed by media specialist Eileen Jones, gives the Makerspace a plethora of new materials to use in the creation of pen roses sculpted from Duck Tape. These popular pen roses are produced by students in the Makerspace area, then sold at the Pink Out and Paint the Gym Purple basketball games. Proceeds go to the Karen Janecek scholarship fund to be awarded to one or more deserving Spartans in Spring 2015. Karen Janecek was a well-liked retired deans assistant who recently lost her battle with cancer in November 2014.
