Bowling For Bolivia  -Friday, November 21

Ten members of the Cross Countries organization are hosting a Candlelight Bowl this month to benefit the people of Bolivia, South America. All proceeds from this event will go toward helping a group of Oak Lawn students fund a service trip to Bolivia in June of 2015. This charity event is supported by family, friends, and OLCHS. "Bowling for Bolivia" 2014 will take place on Friday, November 21, from 9:00 p.m. to Midnight at Arena Lanes in Oak Lawn (4700 West 103rd Street, Oak Lawn Illinois). The evening will consist of dinner followed by a short program, bowling, raffles, and plenty of fun!

In order to reach their financial goal of $60,000, these ten students are continuing the legacy started by their teammates nearly eight years ago. They have come together to promote the need for aid in Bolivia. To further their cause, these young men and women have re-formed a service group known as "Cross Countries", which will focus its efforts on supporting the people of Bolivia. "Bowling for Bolivia" 2014 looks to be very successful. With the support of the community, these students hope to raise over $10,000 from this event. The members of "Cross Countries" include Nick Minnella, Enrique Miranda, Jake Kupres, Kamila Zaremba, Luis Garcia, Tom Parzadka, Pat Gudinowski, Sergio Serna, Miles O'Brien, and Omar Abdelrahman. << read more>>

What's Your 3:58?  -All School Assembly

Student Council retained Eddie Slowikowski as the speaker for the annual motivational assembly. Eddie is an All-American track and cross country athlete from Loyola University who was inducted into Loyola's Hall of Fame. Eddie sought to enrich his life with service and empowerment for himself and others. Whether it was in month-long service projects in Central America or helping the homeless in the city of Chicago, Eddie widened his world view beyond the life of elite training, while applying those same principles to his speaking business.

Eddie used music, sound effects, dancing and audience interaction to bring his memorable presentation to Oak Lawn Community High School staff and students. Eddie entertained the Spartans at an all-school assembly, where he shared personal stories of setting goals, showing compassion, and believing in oneself. Drawing on his record of running a 3:58 minute mile, Eddie challenged the students to consider their own passions and goals in life, or their own 3:58.  <<read more>>

Mr. Biga Recognized by University of Chicago

Former student Musaab Bashir, a student at the prestigious University of Chicago, recently nominated history teacher Frank Biga for the University of Chicago's Outstanding Educator Award. For thirty years, the university has asked its entering students to identify and commend their outstanding teachers, and Musaab named Frank Biga. Frank fits the award's description as someone who opened new vistas and realms of discovery and challenged Musaab intellectually. Frank Biga has been employed at OLCHS since 2003 and teaches AP Economics, Economics, US History, and World History. Congratulations!  <<read more>>

Cross Country Teams Continue Progress, Cap Solid Seasons

When the girls and boys cross country teams headed into the Illinois High School Association Regional Meets recently, both teams knew it would serve as a great measuring stick for progress. After the athletes left it all out on the course and the times were recorded, the boys measured up in second place behind eventual IHSA State Champion Sandburg, and the girls showed a glimpse of possible greatness to come with strong performances from a group constructed mainly of freshmen and sophomores.

On the boys' side, the Spartans battled Sandburg, Eisenhower, Shepard, Marist, Brother Rice, Stagg, Mount Carmel and Reavis. Luis Garcia finished in fifth place and was an All-Regional nominee, while Diego Arana and Nick Minnella both ran well placing eleventh and twelfth, respectively. Junior Steve Raybould and Omar Abdelrahman each ran his fastest time of the season. Raybould placed 19th."We knew it would be really tough to beat Sandburg, but we still did really well," said head coach Susan Szala.  <<read more>>

Silent Disco  -Saturday, December 6

The Senior Class Advisory Board is introducing a new event which will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014. The event is called a "Silent Disco". It is an unique experience in which the students are given light-up Bluetooth headsets and can choose from three different channels of music: one live DJ, and two playlists created by students.

All clubs and teams will have a chance to participate in generating the playlists. An explanatory video was shown at the November 14 all-school assembly that made the event much clearer. To generate a playlist, click on the link for the Playlist Form. Playlists must be returned to Ms. Jones by Friday, November 21, 2014.  The Senior Class is really excited about this new event.  Playlist Form
