Spanish Classes Plan Community Outreach Event

Students in Ms. Wong's Spanish 4 Honors class and Mrs. Torres' Spanish 4 class at Oak Lawn Community High School are launching an exciting event for its Spanish-speaking Spartan families. As students study the second unit, titled "La familia y la comunidad," The Family and the Community, their focus shifts from international issues to the local community of Oak Lawn. A major component of this unit includes a community outreach event. This community outreach event is scheduled for the evening of November 6, 2014.  The students will execute this event, and its purpose is to foster a relationship between Oak Lawn Community High School and the Spanish-speaking parent community of Oak Lawn.  This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to use the target language with heritage speakers in a safe and fun environment. All parents of the students organizing the event are also invited to participate.

Activities for this event will tentatively include: a video presentation to share information about the students in the Spanish classes; guided tours of the school to the Spanish-speaking parents of the community; student created/student translated documents for the guests to provide them with district information in Spanish; student created visual aids to provide guests with information of other community activities; and games/babysitting area for the small children of the parents attending the event.

Persistence Key on a Day of Record Cold Temperatures

The 2014 Rayjus Outdoors - Oak Lawn High School Bass tournament was a character building experience.  With record cold temperatures, rain, snow, and wind gusts up to 30mph, anglers were put to the test on the Kankakee and Des Plaines Rivers! In the end, it was Sean Cook of Joliet Central High School who won big with a bag of four smallmouth weighing 6.81lbs.  "Two inches of rain the day before and a major cold front with high winds made for some extreme conditions and tough fishing.  Rapala crank baits paid off again for me," said Cook.

The Oak Lawn Community High School Spartan Fishing Team duo of John Neubauer and Andy Jensen fished nearly six hours without a single bite.  With 18 minutes left in the tournament, Jensen asked Neubauer to get the net.  "My partner John Neubauer always stresses to me to never give up and always have a positive mental attitude.  While many teams were pulling into the ramp early, we braved the conditions and with one game changing cast, we qualified for the Illinois B.A.S.S. Nation state tournament," stated Jensen.

Third place finishers were Luke Jasper and Tom Rimbo from Lemont High School.  Taking fourth place were Luke Brozovich and Canyon Kenny from Minooka. Finishing in fifth were Bryson Evens and Collin Griffin from Seneca High School.   Each of the top five teams will be facing each other again in the Illinois B.A.S.S. Nation state tournament on Lake Springfield in June 2015.

Bass Pro Shops Bolingbrook donated two beautiful pieces of framed art and two tackle bags.  The Bass Pro Shops Big Bass was awarded to Andy Jensen from Oak Lawn Community High School who caught a 2.39 lbs smallmouth bass. Tournament champion Sean Cook from Joliet Central High School was awarded framed artwork and a tackle bag as well. <<read more>>

 Family Reading Night

The Media Center will host Family Reading Night on November 20, 2014, from 7:00-8:00pm.  The event will be an evening book club for students, parents, staff, and the community (all members of the "Spartan Family!").  There will be discussion and activities based around the popular novel Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell.  The book is a sweet, gritty, and unforgettable story about two misfits in love.  It's a rare bestseller aimed at teens and adults.

Family Reading Night is in conjunction with Illinois Reads, a statewide campaign to promote reading for all Illinois citizens created under the auspices of the Illinois Reading Council.  Illinois Reads focuses on reading in school, as well as at home. Residents across the state from Rockford to Carbondale will be partaking in upcoming family literacy nights.  The culmination event is a statewide celebration of literacy on the same evening as the book club. Registration for Family Reading Night must be completed online

A limited number of event T-shirts will also be on sale that evening or beforehand for  $10.  Proceeds go to the Media Center activity account.  Please contact media specialists Eileen Jones at [email protected] or Jennifer Sidlow at [email protected] for more information.
