iPad Use Expands to All Divisions

OLCHS expands its iPad pilot program to several classrooms this year. Over 500 students were issued iPads this year, and the iPads are being used in all divisions, including math, English, science, history, Spanish, electricity, electronics, and photography.  Also, students enrolled in ILRP through Advanced Placement (AP) courses are involved in this year's pilot.  The 1:1 technology initiative means that students are each given the iPad to help further their education and improve student achievement. The goal of this pilot program is to determine if a 1:1 program would benefit the students of OLCHS.

The iPad 2 model allows students to use Notability for class notes and homework, and several teachers have created iTunes U courses and iBooks for their classes. The iTunes U course allows students to see a daily outline of the course and download all documents/materials or apps needed for that day.  Teachers can send out reminders and announcements to their class via the iTunes U course.  iBooks allows teachers to create their own textbook and interactive learning materials. These books can include photos, videos, text, 3D objects, review questions, vocabulary words, and interactive activities.

Students and parents signed an acceptable use policy at the beginning of the year, and students are allowed to take the iPads home with them and use them 24 hours a day. Two informational sessions were offered for parents as well.  The internet filters are the same for the iPads, so there are no concerns with inappropriate websites.  The pilot will continue second semester, and with proof of success, the Board of Education could approve a full 1:1 progam, with each student receiving an iPad for the 2015-16 school year.

Senior Mitchell Maftean said, "It takes a while to get started with the iPad, but once you get going with it, it's very helpful." To learn more about the school's iPad initiative, visit the school's 1:1 webpage.

Spartan Theater to Present How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying

The theater department will continue its tradition of outstanding entertainment this fall with How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The story concerns young, ambitious J. Pierrepont Finch, who, with the help of the book How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, rises from window washer to chairman of the board of the World Wide Wicket Company while trying to avoid certain employees trying to stop his meteoric rise and dealing with the romantic advances of a secretary falling head over heels for him.

Theater director Billy Denton said, "I love classic musicals, and while this one may not be as well known as other Broadway shows, it's a great comedy with many memorable roles and songs for the students and audience members to enjoy.  We've had a lot of new talent step up for this demanding show, and I'm excited to see how their hard work pays off for the public performances."

Performances will take place November 6, 7, and 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the school's Auditorium Gym, 9400 Southwest Highway, Oak Lawn.  The advance ticket price is $10.  Tickets can be purchased through cast/crew members or by contacting the ticket hotline number at 708/424-5200 x5920. Additional information is available on the school's website at www.olchs.org or by contacting the show's producer Mrs. Meredith McGuire at [email protected] or 708-424-5200 x5920.  <<read more>>

 Family Reading Night

The Media Center will host Family Reading Night on November 20, 2014, from 7:00-8:00pm.  The event will be an evening book club for students, parents, staff, and the community (all members of the "Spartan Family!").  There will be discussion and activities based around the popular novel Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell.  The book is a sweet, gritty, and unforgettable story about two misfits in love.  It's a rare bestseller aimed at teens and adults.

Family Reading Night is in conjunction with Illinois Reads, a statewide campaign to promote reading for all Illinois citizens created under the auspices of the Illinois Reading Council.  Illinois Reads focuses on reading in school, as well as at home. Residents across the state from Rockford to Carbondale will be partaking in upcoming family literacy nights.  The culmination event is a statewide celebration of literacy on the same evening as the book club. Registration for Family Reading Night must be completed online

A limited number of event T-shirts will also be on sale that evening or beforehand for  $10.  Proceeds go to the Media Center activity account.  Please contact media specialists Eileen Jones at
[email protected] or Jennifer Sidlow at [email protected] for more information.

Annual Blood Drive  -Friday, October 10, 2014

Each year, LifeSource offers area high schools the opportunity to earn valuable scholarship money. Oak Lawn Community High School has earned the scholarship money for the past six years. Reduced PACE Bus Fares via Ventra System

The Ventra System (reduced student fares on PACE buses) has started a new program to discount student fares. New students to the district who have never had a Ventra card (or lost their old Ventra card) need the "New-Replace Ventra" form. Parents must fill out the form and mail $2.00 to Ventra. Ventra then sends the card to the school and we deliver it to the student.  The student must then take the card home and a parent/guardian must register the student card with Ventra.  Money can then be loaded onto the card.

Returning students to the district, or students who purchased a Ventra card last school year, need the "Renew Ventra" form. That form needs to be filled out with the students name and card number and returned to the Business Office 123 where it is scanned and emailed to Ventra. This verifies the student is enrolled for the 2014-2015 school year.

The student fare is only valid between Monday and Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. during the school year.  Before and after those hours and on the weekends, the student is charged full fare. The process must be completed each year.  <<read more>>
